Pyrrhic (Metrical Foot)¶
A two-position metrical foot scanned short–short in quantitative verse or weak–weak in accentual-syllabic notation, also called a dibrach and disputed as an independent foot in English prosody.
Core Idea¶
A pyrrhic, or dibrach, is a two-position metrical foot represented as short–short (˘ ˘) in quantitative meter or as two unstressed/weak syllables in accentual-syllabic descriptions. The label classifies a local rhythmic configuration relative to a metrical analysis.[n1]
The cross-system translation requires care: classical quantity distinguishes long and short syllables, while English scansion primarily organizes relative stress. In English, many analysts treat a weak–weak pair as a local variation within surrounding feet rather than an autonomous foot; the category's disputed status is part of its correct identity.[1]
The recognition invariant is two adjacent metrical positions + both short or weak under a declared prosodic system + segmentation as one foot + analysis relative to the containing meter.

What It Is Not¶
The metrical pyrrhic is not a Pyrrhic victory and not the ancient Greek pyrrhic war dance, despite etymological association. It is not any two objectively “quiet” syllables without reference to a verse system. Nor is a weak–weak sequence automatically best segmented as a pyrrhic; adjacent syllables may belong to different surrounding feet.
Quantitative shortness must not be treated as identical to English lack of stress.
Scope of Application¶
The term appears in classical metrics, English accentual-syllabic scansion, prosody handbooks, and analysis of local rhythmic substitution. Standard glossaries define the quantitative and accentual versions but note that modern prosody often groups the weak syllables with adjacent feet.[n1]
Its primary use is diagnostic and descriptive. Claims that a whole English poem is built from pyrrhics require exceptional evidence because an uninterrupted weak–weak pulse supplies no recurring prominence.
Clarity¶
State the language, period, meter, quantity- or stress-based framework, proposed foot boundaries, and surrounding pattern. Mark syllables and read the line aloud, but treat performance as evidence rather than a unique proof. Report alternative scans when boundary or relative stress is genuinely ambiguous.
Manages Complexity¶
The label gives analysts a compact name for a local loss of prominence without discarding the containing meter. Its controversy also disciplines scansion: analysts must justify why two weak positions form a foot instead of redistributing them across neighboring units.

Examples¶
Quantitative notation. Two short syllables grouped as one foot scan ˘ ˘ and are labeled a pyrrhic or dibrach.[n2]
English substitution. In an otherwise iambic line, two relatively weak syllables may be scanned as a pyrrhic, often in balance with a nearby heavier foot.
Alternative analysis. A critic may retain the iambic grid and treat the same weak pair as performance variation rather than create a separate pyrrhic foot.
