Expose one controlled descriptive dimension as an independently selectable and filterable axis whose values can be combined at query time with values selected on other axes.
Core Idea¶
A retrieval facet is one controlled descriptive dimension in a catalog: topic, place, form, time, method, or another governed axis. Resources receive values from a defined list under assignment rules. A user can constrain that axis independently and combine it at query time with choices on other axes. The facet is one slot in a faceted system, not the whole vocabulary or interface.
Scope of Application¶
Retrieval facets organize library catalogs, product search, digital archives, evidence repositories, media collections, and enterprise knowledge systems. They are especially useful where users cannot predict the exact words in a resource but can narrow a collection by stable descriptive dimensions.
Clarity¶
The abstraction separates an independently filterable controlled axis from an arbitrary metadata field or free-form tag. A field becomes a retrieval facet only when its governed values participate directly in combinable search.
Manages Complexity¶
Facets avoid enumerating every compound category in advance. Topic = climate, place = Kansas, form = map, and method = simulation can be assigned and combined independently rather than requiring a bespoke category for “Kansas climate simulation maps.”
Abstract Reasoning¶
Within one facet, values form a paradigmatic alternative set: the cataloger chooses applicable values for the slot. Across facets, selected values combine syntagmatically to express a query. This separates vertical alternatives from horizontal composition.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The same axis-and-combination logic transfers from library science to e-commerce, observability tools, research registries, and document management. Designers can ask which dimensions deserve governed values and independent query controls.
Example¶
An archive record receives Topic = migration, Geographic = Mediterranean, Form = oral history, and Method = interview. A user can select any one axis or combine all four without the archive pre-coining a single compound subject heading.
