Core Idea

Rhetorical listening, theorized by Krista Ratcliffe, is a discursive stance that suspends the move to rebuttal and parses another's discourse for its positional structure through three moves: an identification parse (what the speaker claims as theirs, what is at stake), a difference parse (what genuinely remains contested), and an accountability parse (what the listener's own investments let through and screen out). The third move makes the listener's positionality part of the analysis.

Rhetorical listening lives within rhetoric, composition, and communication ethics, wherever another's discourse can be parsed for positional structure before a reply.

Naming rhetorical listening separates listening-for-rebuttal from listening-for-positional-structure, and pries apart understanding from agreement. Its load-bearing clause is that a listener can come away with a sharper disagreement than they entered with, because it now targets what the speaker actually said, not a reconstruction assembled before listening began.

Manages Complexity

The sprawl of discourse-ethics maxims — be charitable, check your privilege, do not strawman — compresses to one procedural commitment: parse first, respond second, via exactly three named operations. The accountability parse folds the listener's own investments, normally a wildcard, into the tracked procedure; the non-agreement clause splits hearing-accuracy and verdict into two independent axes.
