Semantic Externalism¶
A speaker's linguistic reference, and on some accounts content, is partly fixed by the physical or social environment rather than internal state alone.
Core Idea¶
Semantic externalism says a speaker's internal psychological state alone need not fix the reference of a term or, on stronger accounts, the content attributed to a thought. A controlled twin comparison holds internal facts fixed while varying a relevant physical environment or linguistic community, then tests whether reference/content changes.[ref-03b97319a080][ref-0c589b1e0d5b]
Scope of Application¶
Putnam's original Twin Earth case gives psychologically alike pre-chemistry speakers whose “water” refers to H₂O here and stipulated XYZ there; it tests natural-kind reference, not every word. Burge's original arthritis case keeps a fictional patient's physical and phenomenal history fixed while a counterfactual community broadens the term's accepted use; he argues the belief content ascribed to the patient differs. These are distinct thought-experiment branches, not empirical measurements.[ref-03b97319a080][ref-0c589b1e0d5b]
Clarity¶
State the target: extension, meaning, or mental content. Putnam's minimum is that individual psychology does not fix natural-kind extension; he favors a meaning-difference account. Burge makes an argument about attitude ascription under incomplete understanding. Ordinary disagreement changes an internal belief and is not the matched-twin test.[ref-03b97319a080][ref-0c589b1e0d5b]
Manages Complexity¶
The view explains how people can refer to kinds despite lacking the expertise to discriminate them: a linguistic community can divide recognition labor. It also warns that “meaning” may hide several questions, so the physical-kind example does not automatically settle every issue about private thought.[^ref-03b97319a080]
Abstract Reasoning¶
Identify the expression, match the individuals internally, vary the relevant external anchor, and specify exactly what attribution changes. Ask whether the conclusion depends on a disputed ascription premise. No intrinsic opposed-cost tradeoff is claimed for this philosophical thesis; expert reliance and possible individual error are a combination, not an automatic design compromise.[ref-03b97319a080][ref-0c589b1e0d5b]
Knowledge Transfer¶
The live Meaning prime names the target relation, not a genus of theories about its determination. Theory and Doctrine require organized systems or social carriers not constitutive of every externalist position; Proposition and Idea are generic content bearers, not a useful necessary thesis genus. The portable pattern is failure of local-state sufficiency where environment helps determine reference or content. Do not treat Twin Earth's XYZ or Burge's patient as observed data.[ref-03b97319a080][ref-0c589b1e0d5b]

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Semantic Externalism sits in a moderately populated region (47th percentile for distinctiveness): it has near-neighbors but no dense thicket of look-alikes.
