Suppressed Correlative¶
A fallacy in which one member of an intended contrast is redefined so broadly that it absorbs the other, making the distinction vacuous and eliminating the alternative by stipulation.
Core Idea¶
The fallacy of suppressed correlative, also called lost contrast or suppressed relative, occurs when an opposition is made empty by redefinition. A speaker begins with X versus not-X or another correlative pair, then stretches X until every supposed not-X case counts as X; the maneuver can also be reversed so everything falls under the negative side.
The defect is not that definitions can never change. A useful revision may reveal that an old contrast was mistaken, but it should state that result and supply reasons. The fallacy retains the rhetorical force of the original opposition while removing its discriminating boundary. Diagnosis therefore reconstructs the initial pair, identifies the boundary, follows the redefinition, and asks whether any possible observation could still count against the favored label.
Structural Signature¶
Sig role-phrases:
- initial contrast pair. Supplies two opposed categories intended to discriminate cases. Constitutive frame. If altered: Without a contrast there is no correlative to suppress.
- ordinary boundary criterion. Explains how cases would initially fall on either side. Constitutive baseline. If altered: Vague labels make later collapse hard to diagnose.
- asymmetric redefinition. Expands or changes one category to absorb cases assigned to the other. Identity-bearing move. If altered: A justified refinement that preserves alternatives is not the fallacy.
- empty or impossible alternative. Shows that one side can no longer receive any conceivable case. Constitutive collapse result. If altered: An imbalanced but nonempty contrast is not necessarily suppressed.
- argumentative conclusion. Uses the collapsed vocabulary to claim the favored category covers everything. Central rhetorical function. If altered: A stipulative universal category can be harmless if no contrast is claimed.
What It Is Not¶
- False dilemma. Are options excluded or one option absorbed?
- Legitimate redefinition. Is the old contrast openly abandoned?
- Broad category. Was a rival correlative claimed?
- Continuum fallacy. Is gradation being used to deny all distinction?
Scope of Application¶
Use suppressed correlative with original pair, initial discriminating rule, exact redefinition, formerly contrary cases, resulting empty side, and argumentative payoff stated.
- Logic. Analyzes contrast collapse.
- Rhetoric. Examines persuasive redefinition.
- Conceptual analysis. Tests category boundaries.
- Political discourse. Tracks unfalsifiable labels.
- Scientific criticism. Protects possible counterinstances.
Clarity¶
A concept that covers everything explains little if its contrast was essential to the claim. The fallacy converts an empirical or classificatory question into a verbal certainty.
Manages Complexity¶
Some oppositions genuinely dissolve under better theory. The repair is to abandon or replace the contrast explicitly, not to pretend the old distinction still validates a conclusion.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Recover the original correlative pair.
- State its ordinary boundary and possible cases on each side.
- Locate the redefinition or equivocation.
- Test whether either side has become extensionless.
- Separate legitimate conceptual revision from rhetorical preservation of a lost contrast.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Contrast-destroying redefinition transfers across debates, but an initial correlative pair and emptying move delimit the fallacy. The nearest stopping boundary is explicit: A false dilemma is closest: it wrongly restricts possibilities to alternatives, whereas suppressed correlative destroys the contrast by making one stated alternative absorb the other. The inclusion test remains: An argument suppresses a correlative when it begins with a meaningful opposition and then redefines one side so that the other becomes empty or impossible by stipulation rather than evidence. The structure no longer applies when the case exits when both categories retain possible members under a stable criterion or when the revision openly abandons the original opposition.
Examples¶
Canonical¶
A debate contrasts mysterious with understood phenomena; one speaker redefines mysterious as anything that still admits any unanswered question, so even explained mechanisms count as mysterious and the nonmysterious side becomes impossible.
Mapped back: initial contrast pair → mysterious / nonmysterious; ordinary boundary criterion → whether mechanism is understood; asymmetric redefinition → any residual question means mysterious; empty or impossible alternative → nothing qualifies as nonmysterious; argumentative conclusion → everything is mysterious.
Applied / In Practice¶
Researchers revise a binary disease classification after evidence reveals a continuum and explicitly replace it with graded categories. They changed the scheme, but did not preserve the old contrast while emptying one side, so this is not the fallacy.
Mapped back: initial contrast pair → old binary classes; ordinary boundary criterion → superseded threshold; asymmetric redefinition → none; empty or impossible alternative → old scheme abandoned openly; argumentative conclusion → graded replacement.
Structural Tensions¶
T1: definition repair vs. rhetorical capture. Categories need revision, yet a revision can immunize a claim from counterexample. Diagnostic: Does an opposing case remain possible?
T2: sharp contrast vs. underlying continuum. Binary language can aid reasoning while reality is graded. Diagnostic: Was the contrast replaced or merely hollowed out?
Structural–Framed Character¶
Description turns on initial contrast pair, ordinary boundary criterion, asymmetric redefinition, empty or impossible alternative, argumentative conclusion. Skeletal core. One category in an asserted opposition expands until the rival has no admissible member. Domain-bound accent. Definitions, correlatives, counterexamples, dichotomies, rhetoric, and fallacy diagnosis define the move. Transfer remains bounded because Why not prime. Boundary collapse is portable; this is a named argumentative error. The negative boundary is concrete: Any dichotomy, broad definition, false dilemma, equivocation, continuum, category revision, exception, semantic disagreement, or claim that one class is common is not automatically a suppressed correlative. Suppressed correlative is argumentative-structural: a boundary change destroys an opposition while preserving its rhetorical appearance. Its character: a contrast won by defining the other side out of existence.
Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
