Tonality¶
Organize a musical system around one referential pitch — the tonic — so every note is heard not absolutely but as a position in a hierarchy of stability, with a codified grammar of directed pulls that encodes tension as distance from the center and resolution as return to it.

Scope of Application¶
Tonality lives across the tonal-harmony subfields of music, since its load-bearing tension grammar does not cross into other domains.
- Common-practice harmony (c. 1650-1900) — the home: sonatas, fugues, symphonies, operas whose large-scale structure is tonal first.
- Functional and Schenkerian analysis — Roman-numeral analysis and voice-leading reduction presupposing the hierarchy.
- Composition pedagogy — counterpoint, figured-bass realisation, progression-writing taught as moves within the grammar.

Clarity¶
Naming a passage as "in a key" discharges enormous structure at once: which pitches sound consonant, which chords rest or move, where the music will cadence, how a chromatic alteration functions. Its core move separates the referential pitch from moment-to-moment pitches, so no note is heard absolutely; each is a position in a hierarchy of stability. The decisive distinction is between mere centrality and a codified grammar of directed motion.
Manages Complexity¶
A common-practice movement presents hundreds of pitches and dozens of chords that, without an organizing principle, are each a separate object to evaluate. Naming the key re-coordinates every pitch to one center, so the open question "what is this chord?" collapses to "what is its function, and which way does it pull?" The closed vocabulary of functional roles fixes behavior without analyzing constituent pitches, and tracking the tonic over time renders whole-form as tonal narrative.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Tonality's foundational move is relational hearing — reasoning from position, not absolute identity — inferring resolution-tendency from functional role. A diagnostic move reads chromatic material by how it functions (borrowed chord, secondary dominant, modulation pivot, non-chord tone). Predictive reasoning exploits listeners' internalized hierarchy, treating expectation and its calculated breach as analyzable material, all bounded by the centrality-versus-grammar distinction.

Within tonal harmony, tonality transfers as mechanism: the relational-hearing move and function-to-resolution grammar carry intact across common-practice harmony, Schenkerian analysis, composition pedagogy, jazz, and music cognition.
