Tropological reading¶
A moral mode of scriptural interpretation that reads persons, events and images figuratively as guidance for the believer's conduct and spiritual formation.
Core Idea¶
Tropology is one of the medieval four senses alongside literal, allegorical or typological and anagogical interpretation; historical authors vary in how sharply moral and allegorical senses are separated. An interpreter establishes the textual and doctrinal frame, maps a narrated image or event onto virtues, vices and practices, and applies that moral relation to the reader or community's present life. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
