Universal pragmatics¶
Habermas's reconstruction of the general validity claims and communicative competencies presupposed when speakers seek mutual understanding through language.
Core Idea¶
Universal pragmatics investigates the necessary pragmatic presuppositions under which linguistic interaction can aim at reaching understanding. Comprehensible speech raises criticizable validity claims; participants can accept, challenge and redeem those claims through reasons, creating the rational potential of communicative action. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of social philosophy. It is Habermasian reconstruction of universal communicative competence and validity-claim structure.
