Wrong Direction (Reverse Causation Fallacy)¶
Catch the error of assigning a causal arrow A→B when it actually runs B→A on the strength of a symmetric association alone, by refusing any oriented claim until temporal precedence or interventional response fixes the direction.
Core Idea¶
The wrong-direction fallacy — reverse causation, one reading of non causa pro causa — is assigning a causal arrow from A to B when it actually runs B to A, on an observed association alone. It is a direction error, not an existence error: causation and correlation are both conceded, only the which-way is wrong. Because correlation is symmetric, an association carries no signal about which variable is upstream; only temporal precedence or interventional response can fix the arrow.

The reason it can is correlation's symmetry — A correlates with B as strongly as B with A — so the sharp question becomes not "is there a relationship?" but "which way does the arrow run, and what besides the correlation tells me so?"
