An Affordance Blind-Spot Walkthrough takes one tool and interrogates its grip: what can it perceive, classify, measure, and act on — and, precisely as important, what can it not represent, not measure, not route, not make salient? Its defining move is the deliberate hunt for the invisible — the aspects of a problem the tool doesn't merely handle badly but renders unthinkable, because they never appear on any screen, field, or menu it offers. The walkthrough runs a fixed five-part probe — easy, hard, impossible, visible, invisible — over a specific tool against a specific need, and its output is the tool's affordance boundary plus a list of everything that fell outside it. It is depth, not breadth: it says nothing about which other tools exist, only about where this one stops.

Example

An urban-planning department uses a GIS mapping platform to decide where to add bus shelters. The platform is superb at what it grips: it renders ridership counts, parcel boundaries, and walk-time isochrones in vivid color. A facilitator runs an Affordance Blind-Spot Walkthrough on it before the next siting round.

Easy: map boarding volumes and 400-meter catchments. Hard: represent time-of-day variation without heavy custom work. Impossible: show that the highest-ridership corner is where elderly residents feel unsafe waiting after dark, or that a "low-ridership" stop is low precisely because there is nowhere sheltered to stand. Visible: everything with a coordinate and a count. Invisible: fear, informal caregiving trips, the resident who no longer takes the bus at all and so appears in no ridership layer at all. The walkthrough ends with a short residual list — perceived safety, suppressed demand, caregiver routing — each of which the map had silently been treating as nonexistent. Those residuals go on to be logged and routed elsewhere; the walkthrough's job was to drag them into view.

How it works

  • Fix the pairing. One named tool, one problem-first need. The walkthrough is meaningless in the abstract; it probes a specific grip against a specific situation.
  • Run the five-part probe. Facilitated, out loud, in order: what does the tool make easy, hard, impossible, visible, and invisible? The last two are the payload — surfacing what the tool erases rather than merely what it struggles with.
  • Harvest residuals. Every "impossible" and "invisible" answer becomes a named residual: a stakeholder need, side effect, context, or required action the tool cannot represent. The walkthrough hands these off but does not itself decide their fate.

Tuning parameters

  • Probe depth — a fifteen-minute reflex check versus a facilitated workshop with affected stakeholders in the room. Deeper probing finds subtler invisibilities but costs time and can feel like an indictment of a beloved tool.
  • Adversarial stance — how hard the facilitator pushes past "it handles that fine." A skeptical stance surfaces more blind spots; a gentle one preserves goodwill but misses the quiet erasures.
  • Stakeholder presence — whether the people the tool renders invisible are actually consulted. Their presence is the single biggest source of true "invisible" findings and the hardest to arrange.
  • Residual harvesting rigor — whether every impossibility is captured or only the striking ones. Thorough capture protects reality; selective capture is faster but re-erases the subtle cases.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it attacks the archetype's root tension directly: what a tool cannot grip tends to become cognitively unreal, and this walkthrough makes the unreal briefly speakable. It is the mechanism that most reliably surfaces invisible affordances — the capabilities and, here, the incapacities a design never signals to its user.[n1]

Its failure mode is that a walkthrough surfaces residuals but resolves nothing: run without a downstream register and route, it produces a poignant list of erased needs that is then itself erased — a workshop everyone found moving and no one acted on. It can also over-indict a genuinely well-fit tool, breeding the anti-tool paralysis the archetype warns against. The guarding discipline is to treat every "invisible" finding as a hand-off obligation, not a verdict: pair the walkthrough with a standing register so its residuals get an owner, and keep the probe proportional to stakes.
