Favored-Tool Pause Rule¶
Decision rule — instantiates Tool-Repertoire Bias Counterbalancing
A circuit-breaker that blocks reflexive use of the favored method until its fit to the restated problem has been established.
A Favored-Tool Pause Rule is a trip-wire that fires the instant someone reaches for the default method, and holds the action until two conditions are met: the need has been restated in problem-first terms, and the favored tool's fit to that need has cleared a gate. Its defining move is temporal — it inserts a mandatory beat between impulse and action, so the reflexive "of course we'll use X" cannot execute unexamined. The rule owns no analysis of its own; it is pure interruption plus a pass/fail gate. Its whole value is that reaching for the familiar tool is normally frictionless and automatic, and the pause reintroduces just enough friction for judgment to happen at all.
Example¶
An HVAC field technician is dispatched to a commercial building where "the AC keeps failing." His favored tool — the move he has made a thousand times — is to condemn and replace the compressor; it is expensive, it is what his truck is stocked for, and it usually works. A Favored-Tool Pause Rule, written into the company's dispatch app, blocks the "recommend compressor replacement" button until the tech completes a thirty-second restated-need check and a two-line fit gate.
Forced to pause, he restates the need: "tenant wants reliable cooling; the unit trips its breaker under load on hot afternoons." Then the gate: does compressor replacement fit that pattern? Written out, it doesn't — a failing compressor rarely trips a breaker on a schedule tied to outdoor temperature; that smells like an electrical or refrigerant-charge issue. The pause didn't tell him the answer, and it didn't build him an alternative. It simply stopped the automatic five-thousand-dollar move long enough for the mismatch to surface, so he could send the case toward a diagnosis that fit.
How it works¶
- Bind the trigger to the default. The rule fires specifically on the favored/reflexive tool — the "we always do X" move — not on every action, so friction lands where bias is highest.
- Require a restated need to release. The pause cannot be dismissed until the problem is stated in problem-first language, denying the tool the chance to define the problem retroactively.
- Gate on fit, pass/fail. A short, binary check — does this tool preserve enough of the restated need to proceed? — releases or blocks the action. The rule renders a gate verdict; it does not produce a graded score or a rival.
Tuning parameters¶
- Trigger scope — only the single most-overused tool, or a set of defaults. Broad scope catches more reflexes but adds friction that experts on genuinely routine cases will resent.
- Pause weight — a two-line self-check versus a required sign-off. Heavier pauses stop more misfires and annoy more people; lighter ones are frictionless but easy to autopilot through.
- Override path — whether and how fast the rule can be bypassed under time pressure. A generous override preserves speed but invites the pause becoming a rubber stamp.
- Proportionality — tying pause weight to stakes so low-risk routine work gets a feather-touch and high-stakes moves get a real gate.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it targets action bias at the exact moment it operates — the pull to do the familiar thing now rather than pause to check whether it fits.[n1] It is the archetype's cheapest behavioral intervention and the one that scales to routine work where convening a review would be absurd.
Its failure mode is habituation: any pause a person meets fifty times a day becomes a reflex of its own, clicked through without thought, and the rule then certifies bias while appearing to guard against it. Set too broadly it breeds resentment and the anti-tool friction the archetype warns against; set too narrowly it misses the reflex that matters. The guarding discipline is to keep the pause proportional to stakes, to vary or audit it so it can't be autopiloted, and to remember it only withholds the default — it does not decide what to do instead.
How it implements the components¶
tool_fit_gate— the pass/fail release check is a fit gate: the favored tool may proceed only if it clears "does this preserve enough of the restated need?"problem_first_restated_need— the pause cannot be released until the need is restated in problem-first terms, forcing the anchor into existence before the tool can act.
It halts the default and gates it, but it does not build or supply any alternative to use instead — generating rivals is alternative_instrument_set, held by its nearest twin, the Alternative-Tool Red Team; the pause only stops the familiar move, the red team creates the competitor. It also does not execute an outbound hand-off (referral_or_borrowed_tool_path, the Borrow-or-Refer Protocol).
