Ritual — instantiates Abductive Explanation Selection
A facilitated session that converts anomalies into candidate hypotheses while preserving dissent and uncertainty.
The Anomaly-to-Hypothesis Workshop is a facilitated group session whose only job is the front of the abductive move: turn a surprising observation into a bounded, dissent-preserving set of candidate hypotheses. It first pins down exactly what needs explaining — the explanandum boundary — then generates rivals in a way that structurally protects minority and politically sensitive explanations from being flattened by the loudest first story. Its defining move, and what makes it a ritual rather than a template, is facilitation against premature convergence: no candidate is ranked or tested inside the room. The output is deliberately a plurality, handed onward for selection.
Example¶
A semiconductor fab sees wafer yield on one line drop eight points overnight. A cross-functional workshop convenes: process, equipment, materials, and metrology engineers. The facilitator's first act is to bound the explanandum — "yield loss localized to line 3, on wafers processed after 22:00, showing one specific edge-defect signature" — replacing the vague "the line is broken." Only then does generation begin, and it begins silently: each engineer writes candidate hypotheses before anyone speaks, so the senior process engineer's hunch does not anchor the room. Surfaced candidates include a new photoresist lot, chamber contamination, a miscalibrated etch tool, an overnight humidity excursion, and a metrology false-positive. The metrology lead's dissenting view — that the "defect" may be a measurement artifact — is recorded rather than argued down. Because blaming the resist lot has contract consequences with a supplier, that candidate is flagged as stakeholder-sensitive. The session ends with five live hypotheses and a noted dissent, handed to test planning — no winner declared.
How it works¶
- Bound the explanandum first. Write down precisely what is being explained, in observation terms, before any theorizing.
- Generate before debate. Use silent brainwriting or round-robin so candidates surface without anchoring on the first or most senior voice.
- Mandate a rival. The front-runner must be met with at least one credible competitor before the room moves on.
- Record dissent and sensitivity, don't resolve them. Minority views and explanations with stakeholder consequences are logged as live, then handed off as a plurality.
Tuning parameters¶
- Framing tightness — a narrow explanandum versus a wide one. Narrow focuses generation; too narrow amputates the real anomaly.
- Generation method — silent brainwriting versus open discussion. Silent lowers anchoring but loses the spark of building on others aloud.
- Facilitation firmness — how hard the facilitator protects dissent against consensus pressure. Firmer preserves plurality; heavier-handed can feel adversarial.
- Generation stop rule — breadth target versus a time box. More candidates reduce blind spots but risk diffuse, low-quality lists.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is beating first-story fixation and surfacing hypotheses that live across silos — the metrology explanation that the process team would never have raised alone. A structured session widens the candidate set precisely when the pressure is to narrow it.
Its failure mode is groupthink: when cohesion or hierarchy suppresses dissent, the group converges on the senior member's guess and mistakes agreement for evidence.[n1] The classic misuse is a workshop staged as theater to ratify a cause management already chose. The guarding discipline is to generate silently before discussing, to make at least one rival mandatory, and to record dissent and stakeholder-sensitive candidates in writing so they cannot be quietly dropped between the room and the follow-up.
