Variant generator — instantiates Framing Effect Audit
Re-expresses the same figure against different baselines, denominators, and comparison classes to reveal how much of a judgment rides on the chosen reference point rather than the underlying quantity.
Baseline Reference Swap takes a single quantity and re-expresses it against a range of reference points — a different baseline year, a different denominator, a different comparison class — while the underlying data stay fixed. Its defining move is that it holds the number constant and varies only the thing you measure it against, so the audit can see how much of a conclusion comes from the reference the presenter happened to choose. Because a reference swap is the frame variable most likely to hide a scope change (a per-capita denominator quietly imports population; an intensity denominator imports output), the mechanism's honesty hinge is a record of whether each swap is genuinely equivalent or has changed what is being compared.
Example¶
A national environment ministry is drafting the headline for its annual emissions report. The raw figure is fixed — total greenhouse gas emissions this year — but the sentence around it is not yet decided. Baseline Reference Swap lays the same tonnage against four references: "down 41% versus 1990" (the Kyoto baseline), "up 6% versus 2005," "per-capita emissions flat for a decade," and "emissions intensity down 58% per unit of GDP." Every one is arithmetically defensible; each tells a different political story. The swap's real work is the equivalence note it attaches: the first two differ only in baseline year (fully equivalent), but the per-capita and intensity versions are not like-for-like — they fold in population growth and economic output, so a "flat" or "improving" reading can coexist with rising absolute emissions. The ministry now knows its conclusion is reference-dependent and that two of the four framings change scope, so it can pair the headline with the absolute figure rather than let a denominator do the persuading.
How it works¶
- Inventory the reference variables. List the choices the figure is silently measured against — baseline period, denominator, index, comparison class, peer set — rather than treating "the number" as self-standing.
- Construct the swapped views. Re-express the same quantity under each reference, producing a small set of alternates that differ only in what they compare to.
- Certify or flag equivalence. For each swap, record what is held constant and what changes; mark the swaps that are arithmetically identical apart from framing versus those that alter scope (a new denominator imports a new variable). This is the step that separates a true reference-framing effect from a hidden content change.
The distinguishing discipline is that it manufactures reference variants and audits their equivalence — it does not measure how many readers flip, nor decide which version ships.
Tuning parameters¶
- Reference breadth — how many of the reference variables you swap (baseline only, or baseline plus denominator plus comparison class). Wider surfaces more hidden anchors but multiplies the versions to reconcile.
- Equivalence strictness — whether you accept only arithmetically identical restatements or allow plausibly comparable ones. Strict keeps every swap honest; loose covers realistic presentations but invites false equivalence.
- Anchor spread — how far apart the chosen references are (adjacent baseline years versus a decade apart). A wide spread exposes reference-dependence dramatically but can caricature the range of honest framings.
- Scope-change flagging — how aggressively you mark swaps that import a new variable. Strict flagging protects readers; lax flagging lets a denominator smuggle a scope shift.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is exposing that a headline figure is really a figure-plus-reference, and catching the swaps where the reference change quietly changes the subject. It gives report writers, analysts, and regulators a repeatable way to see when "down 40%" and "up 6%" describe the identical data.
Its central failure mode is the mirror of what it detects: a swap presented as equivalent when it is not. Denominator neglect makes a per-capita or per-dollar figure feel like the same measurement re-scaled when it has actually introduced population or output as a hidden term.[n1] Run carelessly, the mechanism can even launder a misleading reference by generating a plausible-looking set of "equivalent" alternates around it. The discipline that keeps it honest is to attach an equivalence note to every swap and to carry the absolute, un-referenced quantity alongside the reframed ones.
