Before/After Contrast Framing¶
Method — instantiates Sequential Contrast and Temporal Distinctiveness
Uses a preserved prior-state and a later-state frame, joined by an explicit transition, to make change, progress, degradation, or transformation legible as a temporal difference.
Before/After Contrast Framing makes a change visible by pinning down two states — the one that existed before an intervention and the one that exists after — and asserting the difference between them across a marked transition point. Its defining move, and the one thing that separates it from every sibling, is that it stands or falls on a genuinely captured prior state: the "before" is not a memory, a reconstruction, or a rhetorical foil but a snapshot taken (or preserved) while the first state was still real. A before/after frame that cannot show where its baseline came from is not this mechanism — it is decoration. The frame does not merely pace or dramatize a difference; it makes an auditable claim that this state became that one, and holds an explicit before-image against which the after-image can be checked.
Example¶
A city transportation department reconfigures a dangerous four-lane arterial into a two-lane "road diet" with a center turn lane and protected bike lanes. Before touching the road, they capture the baseline: a month of speed-radar readings, the prior lane geometry photographed from a fixed camera pole, injury-crash counts for the preceding three years, and pedestrian crossing times. The reconstruction goes live on a dated milestone — ribbon-cutting in April — which becomes the transition marker that separates the two regimes.
Six months later they build the contrast frame: the same fixed-pole photograph, the same radar station, the same crash-count window length, now for the "after" state. The 85th-percentile speed dropped from 41 to 34 mph; injury crashes fell. Crucially, they also carry a counterfactual reference: crash rates on comparable untouched arterials citywide, which drifted only slightly over the same period — so the improvement can be read as the redesign's doing rather than a city-wide safety trend. The output is a paired, dated, like-for-like comparison a skeptical council member can audit line by line.
How it works¶
The method is disciplined less by its steps than by what it refuses to skip:
- Capture the prior state before it disappears. The "before" must be recorded contemporaneously — measurement, image, transcript, or metric — not narrated from memory afterward.
- Fix the transition point. A single dated, named event (a launch, a cutover, an intervention) so both sides know which regime any observation belongs to.
- Compose the like-for-like pair. The after-image is captured on the same instrument, framing, and metric as the before, so the comparison isolates the change rather than the method of looking.
- Hold a counterfactual. Something that shows what the "before" trajectory would have done anyway — a control site, an untreated cohort, a seasonal baseline — so the difference is attributable rather than merely coincident with time.
Tuning parameters¶
- Baseline richness — a single snapshot versus a distribution captured over a window. A distribution guards against picking an unusually good or bad "before," at the cost of more collection effort.
- Transition sharpness — a clean instantaneous cutover versus a phased rollout. Sharp transitions make attribution cleaner but are often unrealistic; phased ones need the transition marker to record which phase each observation falls in.
- Counterfactual strength — from none, to a seasonal/historical baseline, to a matched control. Stronger counterfactuals defend against "it would have changed anyway" but cost access to comparison cases.
- Symmetry of capture — how strictly the after-image mirrors the before-image's instrument and framing. Looser symmetry is cheaper but lets the comparison drift into an artifact of measurement.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is legibility with accountability: a well-built before/after frame turns a diffuse "things got better" into a specific, checkable, dated claim that a non-expert can inspect. It is the natural backbone of change documentation, program evaluation, and remediation reporting.
Its central failure mode is the post hoc trap — treating temporal succession as proof of causation. Because the frame is so persuasive, a difference driven by a concurrent trend, a seasonal swing, or regression to the mean reads as though the intervention caused it. The classic misuse is the reconstructed baseline: an impressive "before" assembled after the change, chosen to flatter the "after." This mechanism guards against that in two ways — it insists the baseline be captured contemporaneously, and it carries a counterfactual so a secular trend cannot masquerade as an effect. The honest question is Campbell and Stanley's history threat[n1]: could something other than the intervention, occurring between the two captures, account for the difference?
