Rhetoric

← Back to Mechanisms by Origin Domain

The systematic study and practice of persuasive discourse — identifying, crafting, and analyzing arguments suited to audiences, occasions, and purposes. Classically organized by five canons (invention, arrangement, style, memory, delivery) and three genres (forensic, deliberative, epideictic); modernly extended to include argumentation theory, rhetorical criticism, and visual / digital rhetoric. Canonical traditions: Isocrates, Aristotle's Rhetoric, Cicero, Quintilian, the Second Sophistic, medieval rhetoric as part of the trivium (with grammar and logic), the New Rhetoric (Perelman & Olbrechts-Tyteca, Burke, Toulmin's argument schema).

Reviewed origins (47)

These attributions have been reviewed as historical or practice origins and promoted to mechanism frontmatter.

  • Action-Link Landing Path — Routes post-story motivation into a proportionate choice, resource, support, commitment, or deliberation step.
  • Association-to-Evidence Matrix — Lists each association, the property allegedly transferred, the warrant channel claimed, available evidence, counterevidence, and permitted decision use in one reviewable grid.
  • Audience Counterargument Map — Lists expected objections and designs credible story moments that acknowledge rather than erase them.
  • Channel-Specific Scope Note — Attaches a short, context-specific qualification to a term so it propagates neither too broadly nor too narrowly on the channel where it is used.
  • Claim Tagging Matrix — Lists claims in rows and tags each by source, claim type, warrant level, bridge assumptions, and calibrated wording.
  • Consideration-Not-Endorsement Disclaimer — A repeated communication convention that makes clear when a position is being examined, not adopted or normalized as correct.
  • Context Frame Header — Bolts a short interpretive frame onto the front of a message — who is speaking, in what role, through what channel, for what purpose — so the whole thing is read through the intended lens.
  • Cross-Stasis Dialogue Protocol — A turn-by-turn conversational ruleset that catches an answer aimed at the wrong question in real time and names the equivocation as it happens.
  • Evidence Linking — Attaches the basis — source, data, confidence, or assumption — to each claim so a mistrusted or unsupported statement becomes something participants can actually evaluate.
  • Executive-Summary Caveat Budget — Reserves a fixed share of an executive summary for the caveats that would change the decision, and spends that budget before the confident headlines.
  • Fact-Definition-Quality-Policy Matrix — A fixed grid whose columns are the stasis question types; sorting each claim into a cell both labels it and dictates what a valid answer must look like.
  • Fallacy Label Justification Note — Ties a named fallacy to the exact defective inference move and states it as a reasoning correction rather than a stigmatizing label.
  • Fallacy Triage Matrix — Sorts a pile of suspected reasoning defects by fallacy family and by how much each actually damages the inference, then routes each one.
  • Figurative Language Review Checklist — An editorial pass that scans a near-final draft, comparison by comparison, for figures that are unmarked, missing a named feature, or likely to lose their boundary when summarized.
  • Forced-Choice Reframe — Exposes an either/or as persuasion rather than logic — re-stating the coercive frame, flagging its closure claim, and mapping the excluded middle it was built to hide.
  • Form-Content Alignment Matrix — Cross-references every piece of substantive content against every formal feature in a grid, exposing forms that carry nothing and content that no form carries.
  • Fragment Reuse Matrix — A table crossing each likely-to-travel fragment against its probable reusers, invited uses, misuse risks, and required anchors, so an artifact's afterlife is planned before release.
  • Jurisdictional Stasis Routing Check — Decides whose call each typed question is — which forum or authority is competent — and routes each to the body or neighbor archetype that can validly decide it.
  • Like/As Clause Template — A fill-in-the-blank simile skeleton — 'X is like Y in respect R, but not in respect N' — that bakes the marker and the scope limit into the grammar of the comparison itself.
  • Literalization, Boundary-Case, and Overextension Test — Uses edges counterexamples non-examples and paraphrase to detect identity claims and excess transfer.
  • Memory Palace Layout — Provides a visual or imagined layout that holds loci; the layout is a mechanism and not the archetype itself.
  • Method of Loci — Implements the archetype by placing content at remembered locations and recalling it through imagined traversal.
  • Non-Literality Disclaimer — A bolt-on clause appended to a comparison that states, in plain words, that the resemblance is figurative and must not be read as literal identity — keeping the figure while fencing its worst inference.
  • Option Space Expansion Prompt — Breaks a false binary by regenerating the live options a two-way framing suppressed.
  • Pause in Speech — Creates a beat of silence in live speech so a line can land, a point can settle, or a listener can catch up.
  • Premise Relevance & Acceptability Test — Screens each premise for whether it is acceptable in its own right and actually relevant to the conclusion it is offered to support.
  • Presentation Walkthrough — Applies the route index to speeches, demonstrations, teaching sequences, or briefings that require stable ordered recall.
  • Progressive Reveal Sequence — Unveils a whole in an ordered run of partial disclosures, so each reveal pays off the last hold and opens the next.
  • Pull-Quote and Caveat Pairing — Deliberately writes each quotable line already fused to the scope and evidence limit it cannot survive without, so the caveat travels with the quote.
  • Qualifier-Drop Scan — Inventories the hedges, scope limits, and conditions in the substance that fix when a claim is true, then flags the material ones the summary silently dropped.
  • Quote Survivability Test — Reads each likely excerpt entirely on its own and asks whether it stays accurate, attributable, and bounded once nothing around it remains.
  • Quote-Snippet Context Window — Bundles an excerpted quote with the minimum surrounding context and a trace to its source, so the fragment cannot be flipped by removing the words that stood next to it.
  • Recipient Inference Walkthrough — Role-plays a specific recipient's reasoning from their own background and role, stepping from the signal to the reading they'll actually reach, before the message is sent.
  • Red Herring Filter Checklist — Screens the moves in a live deliberation for issue-shifting, affective activation, or narrative cues that quietly replace the relevant evidence.
  • Refusal Script — Reusable, respectful language for saying no or not-yet — grounded in a legitimate right to refuse — so front-line people can decline without negotiating, over-apologizing, or damaging the relationship.
  • Refutation Script Library — A curated, indexed store of prewritten rebuttals — one per recurring false or manipulative claim — pairing the claim with the structured reason it fails, so a defender answers on contact without improvising.
  • Relevance Reframing — Reconnects accurate-but-unusable information to the listener's actual question or decision, so 'why are you telling me this?' becomes 'here's why this matters to you.'
  • Scope and Audience Note — Declares who a message applies to, what it covers and excludes, and until when — so its reach doesn't silently expand when it's reused.
  • Semantic Incongruity Hook — Opens with a word or image that doesn't belong, then resolves the mismatch into the intended message so the surprise pays off in meaning rather than mere shock.
  • Simile Scaffold Prompt — A guided prompt that helps a writer generate and choose among candidate source domains, tuning the comparison to the audience before any sentence is fixed.
  • Slide Sequencing — Orders an explanation as a run of discrete slides that opens on a title and agenda and advances one frame at a time, so an audience follows the intended line of reasoning in step.
  • Source–Target Mapping Note — A working ledger that maps each source feature to 'transfers / does not transfer,' recording which resemblances a comparison invites and which it must fence off — and which rival sources were rejected.
  • Stasis Mapping Workshop — Gets every party in one room to co-build the stasis map — claims, question types, live mismatches, and sequence — as a single shared artifact.
  • Stasis Review Memo — The closing written record of a stasis process — states which question was controlling and why, what was decided, what remains open, and what would reopen it.
  • Structured Debate — Gives thesis and antithesis equal disciplined expression so each side's strongest claims, evidence, and concerns are visible before synthesis begins.
  • True-Member Language Flag — Scans for 'true / real / genuine / authentic' language that appears after a counterexample, signaling a persuasive redefinition of who counts as a member.
  • Unresolved-Question Hold — Poses a question and deliberately refuses to answer it, holding the open loop at the right intensity until its answer will land hardest.

Adaptation & Reconfiguration

Solutions that alter structure, parameters, roles, or behavior in response to changing conditions while preserving the system's purpose.

  • Counterargument Rehearsal — Has the receiver generate and voice their own rebuttals to a weakened attack — escalated and varied between reps — so resistance is built by their own effort rather than handed to them.
  • Manipulation Tactic Labeling Card — A pocket-sized reference that names each manipulation tactic and its tell, so a receiver can recognise a move in the moment instead of just feeling that something is off.
  • Matrix Game — A lightweight game in which players propose an action plus reasons it should succeed, and an adjudicator rules on the outcome by weighing the arguments — strategic interaction approximated by argument, not simulation.
  • Prebunking Message — A broadcast forewarning that teaches a wide audience to spot a manipulation technique before it arrives — establishing the messenger's legitimacy and refusing to amplify the very claim it inoculates against.
  • Rumor Prebuttal Brief — A short, targeted briefing that reaches an at-risk audience just before a specific anticipated rumor does — naming the coming claim in defused form, why it fails, carried by a trusted messenger in time to preempt it.
  • Tiered Notification Ladder — Separates passive information, advisories, urgent warnings, and critical interrupts into distinct salience tiers so routine events can never borrow emergency force.

Aggregation & Synthesis

Solutions that combine many observations, judgments, signals, or parts into a useful whole while managing weighting, dependence, and loss of detail.

  • Before/After Content Audit — Compares the same outputs before and after they pass through the filter stack — draft versus published — to measure what was cut, softened, delayed, or reframed.
  • Rumor Verification Notice — Attaches verification status, context, and recommended action to a fast-spreading claim so circulation is not mistaken for proof.
  • Staggered Information Release — Releases social, ranking, or aggregate information to participants in phases so early movers do not disproportionately anchor everyone who comes later.
  • Stakeholder Alignment Session — Brings the affected and responsible parties together to surface each side's constraints and commitments and agree who holds authority over what — enough shared understanding to act without hidden resistance.
  • Viewpoint Presence Dashboard — Tracks, period over period, which viewpoints and sources are present in the surviving output and which stay absent — turning slow filter drift toward homogeneity into something you can watch.

Alignment & Incentives

Solutions that make individual choices, rewards, responsibilities, or local objectives support a larger goal instead of working against it.

  • Paired Message Frame — Delivers an approach-amplifying message and a concern-acknowledging message as one coordinated pair, so encouragement does not intensify the very fear it needs to ease.
  • Public Correction and Repair Statement — A public statement that replaces a spread blame story with a bounded account of what is known and unknown, records the real grievance, and commits to repair.
  • Rumor and Amplification Trace — Maps where a blame story is spreading and which channels are amplifying it, separating the social pressure system from the causal facts.
  • Shared Screen Highlight — Uses cursor focus, laser pointer, box highlight, or spotlighting to make one target visible to all participants on a shared screen.

Allocation & Prioritization

Solutions that distribute scarce attention, effort, money, capacity, or opportunity among competing claims and make the order of service explicit.

  • Side-Channel Redirect Notice — A reusable, face-saving message that moves an informally-offered contribution back onto the common intake path — without making the person who received it personally responsible for evaluating it.

Anticipation & Forecasting

Solutions that look ahead, surface plausible futures, identify leading indicators, or prepare options before a consequential state arrives.

9 mechanisms · View full solution family

  • Agenda-Setting Motion — Tables a fully drafted proposal into a deliberative body's procedure so the room debates amendments to your text instead of starting from a blank page.
  • Analogy Mapping Table — For an argument by analogy, records which source-domain features actually map to the target and which persuasive similarities carry no evidential weight.
  • Anchor Offer — Opens with a concrete, deliberately placed number so every counter-move is measured against your reference point rather than a neutral baseline.
  • Downstream Remix Red Team — A pre-release exercise in which reviewers deliberately clip, caption, screenshot, meme, and hostilely reframe the artifact to find the fragments that betray its meaning.
  • Fragment Versioning Log — A dated ledger of every change to a reusable fragment, with version labels, so old excerpts still in circulation can be recognized as superseded.
  • Misquote Response Protocol — A pre-agreed decision tree for what to do when a fragment circulates with a distorted frame — correct, clarify, ignore, or accept — before emotion sets the response.
  • Narrative Frame Release — Releases a durable interpretive frame — the lens an issue is read through — so later voices must accept, attack, or argue inside your framing.
  • Social Card and Snippet Preview — Inspects and tunes the platform-generated previews — share cards, search snippets, thumbnails — that most audiences will see instead of the artifact itself.
  • Staged Disclosure Protocol — Releases a reflexive forecast in controlled phases — to whom, in what order, at what detail — so those who must prepare can act before the reaction that broad release would trigger.

Attention, Salience & Focus

Solutions that direct limited attention toward what matters, protect focus from interference, or deliberately change what becomes noticeable.

11 mechanisms · View full solution family

  • Cue Order Resequencing — Reorders the cues in a message so the safe frame or desired action arrives before any unavoidable mention of the unwanted target, denying it the anchor position.
  • Juxtaposed Narratives — Presents two stories, accounts, or sequences together so their similarities, contradictions, or moral and strategic implications emerge from adjacency.
  • Page Design — Structures a document with headings, order, margins, and callouts so a reader is paced through claim, evidence, caveat, and action in the intended sequence — and the qualifying context stays attached to what it qualifies.
  • Rhythm Break or Pause — Interrupts an established cadence with a beat of silence or a held pause, resetting attention at the moment before the thing that must land.
  • Safe Label Substitution — Swaps a triggering term for a safer label, code, or metaphor that conveys enough meaning without rehearsing the harmful specifics — under an explicit honesty boundary.
  • Salience Red Team — A standing adversarial group chartered to ask what the loudest items are crowding out and who engineered their prominence.
  • Salience-Significance Matrix — Scores each item twice — how much attention it grabs and how much it actually matters — so the loud-but-trivial and the quiet-but-critical sort into different corners.
  • Shown-vs-Unshown Audit — Sets a display's visible items beside the relevant ones it leaves out, so the gap between what is shown and the full field becomes something you have to look at.
  • Side-by-Side Comparison Display — Places distinct items in the same viewing field so differences, similarities, gaps, or contradictions can be inspected without mentally reconstructing the relation.
  • Slide Composition — Composes a single presented slide so the audience's involuntary first glance — during the few seconds it's on screen — lands on the one intended point, not on decoration or a wall of bullets.
  • Visual Storytelling Sequence — Chooses the order in which scenes and evidence are met so a narrative arc carries the viewer along the intended interpretive route to a resolved ending.

Boundary & Scope Control

Solutions that define, move, or police what is inside a problem, system, role, claim, or responsibility and what remains outside it.

6 mechanisms · View full solution family

  • Ad Hoc Boundary-Shift Probe — Flags when a category's boundary was moved only after a counterexample appeared — the tell-tale post-hoc, circular shift that rescues a universal claim by redefining it.
  • Claim Scope Freeze — Records the claim and its membership criteria exactly as they stood before any counterexample appeared, so later boundary changes are visible against a fixed baseline.
  • Claim Strength Ladder Review — Reviews a claim's asserted force against its support and moves it up or down the all–most–some–none ladder until the two match.
  • Most-Threshold Statement — Pins a 'most' or 'majority' claim to an explicit threshold, denominator, and measurement so it cannot drift into 'all' or collapse into 'some'.
  • Scope-Revision Memo — Documents a legitimate narrowing of a claim — the new scope, its independent rationale, and what changed — so revision is governed rather than ad hoc.
  • Speaker Attribution — Binds a statement to the identity, role, or account responsible for it, so that first-person and authorial references — 'I approve', 'we recommend', 'per my note' — still resolve once the speaker is no longer present.

Calibration & Tuning

Solutions that compare behavior with a reference and adjust parameters, thresholds, mappings, or tolerances until performance falls within an acceptable range.

3 mechanisms · View full solution family

  • Hedging with Clarity — Calibrated qualifiers that lower interpersonal threat while a clarity floor keeps the required action, concern, or boundary unmistakable.
  • Rumor or Failure Propagation Map — Draws the network of who-carries-what from patient zero outward, so the nodes amplifying a rumor or defect — and where to watch for it — become visible.
  • Status-Preserving Attribution — Truthfully attributes a problem to constraints, standards, new information, or process gaps rather than personal failing — cutting defensiveness without erasing accountability.

Communication & Signaling

Solutions that convey meaning, intent, state, or credibility across people or systems while accounting for interpretation, noise, and strategic response.

25 mechanisms · View full solution family

  • Alternative-Metaphor and Countermetaphor Comparison — Compares candidate source frames and literal accounts on understanding options values emotion and decisions.
  • Binary Validity Test — Adjudicates whether a two-way choice is a genuine hard binary or a false dilemma — and, when the binary survives, records the real constraint that keeps the middle closed.
  • Boundary Question Ladder — A fixed, escalating sequence of questions that pushes outward on the edge of the option space, rung by rung, until the frame's true boundary and the options just past it come into view.
  • Bundled Clause or Motion Split — Divides a compound clause, motion, or package into separately decidable items so that assenting to one is no longer forced to carry assent to the rest.
  • Clarification Protocol — A response move that asks the sender to state the buried premise before answering, so the receiver can engage the real question without accepting it — and without escalating to a challenge.
  • Context Shift Test — Stress-tests a message by imagining it forwarded, archived, or re-read out of its original setting, to see whether its meaning survives the move.
  • Counter-Narrative Red Team — Challenges the story with alternative frames, stronger objections, and affected-group interpretations.
  • Effect-Chain Tracing — Follows an utterance's consequences forward as a causal chain — immediate reaction to downstream behavior to lasting consequence — and marks where the effect that actually landed diverged from the effect the speaker sought.
  • Force Classification — Classifies what kind of act a message actually performs — notice, question, demand, offer, or ruling — so the response it genuinely compels can be told apart from the assent it merely implies.
  • Implicature Audit — Examines a message for what it implies beyond the literal words — what's suggested by what's said, unsaid, emphasized, or softened — and flags the risky implications.
  • Layer Separation Reframing — Reframes a disputed utterance from one fused verdict into separate questions — what the words said and what act they performed on a preserved record — so each layer can be judged on its own terms instead of collapsed into a single yes-or-no.
  • Literal Content Parsing — Splits a message into what it literally asserts or asks and what it merely presupposes, so the presupposition surfaces as a claim in its own right instead of riding in unexamined.
  • Metaphor Drift, Harm, and Downstream-Decision Audit — Samples reuse reinterpretation translation policy incidents identity effects and outcomes to trigger revision or retirement.
  • Narrative Ethics Review — Checks truthfulness, agency, disclosure, vulnerability, stigma, emotional coercion, and overgeneralization risk against explicit legitimacy boundaries.
  • Non-Ratifying Response Option — A designed response choice — acknowledge, decline-as-framed, dispute, none-of-the-above — that lets the responder engage the channel while the recorded meaning of their response carries no ratification.
  • Plain-Language Disclosure — A layered, plainly-worded statement that puts the scope, limits, and boundary of what agreeing commits you to in a first-time reader's line of sight — so assent is informed rather than inferred from not-having-noticed.
  • Post-Story Reflection Prompt — Asks audiences to state the story's point, evidence limits, relevance, and possible next actions.
  • Premise–Action Split — Designs a channel so the surface action and the embedded premise ride on two independent tracks, binding assent to the premise late and separately — so the action can proceed without conceding the premise.
  • Presupposition Challenge Marker — A marker attached to an otherwise-ordinary response — 'under protest,' 'without prejudice,' 'not conceding X' — that reserves the responder's position on one named presupposition so engaging can't be read as accepting it.
  • Projected-Entailment, Non-Mapping, and Causal-Overreach Audit — Derives every inference a mapping invites, grades each as supported, uncertain, generative, misleading, or prohibited against target evidence, and fences the source features and causal claims that must not transfer.
  • Repair Target Selection — Given a diagnosed cross-layer mismatch, decides which single layer actually broke — wording, standing, or effect — and picks the matched remedy at the right intensity, so effort lands on the failing layer rather than the loudest one.
  • Signal Issuance Rubric — A written test of the evidence and category a case must satisfy before a given signal may fire — the gate that decides whether the mark goes up and exactly what it then claims.
  • Source–Target Structure and Correspondence Matrix — Aligns objects relations processes forces roles scales constraints evidence and confidence.
  • Transportive Storyboard — Maps characters, stakes, scenes, emotional beats, and payload points before production so transportation and the intended shift are designed, not accidental.
  • Wording Test — A sender-side check that vets a question, notice, or clause before it goes out — asking whether every permitted response would concede the same buried premise, and returning a neutral rewrite when it does.

Compression & Simplification

Solutions that reduce complexity, detail, or dimensionality while retaining the structure needed for the current decision or task.

3 mechanisms · View full solution family

  • Executive Summary — Communicates the essential structure of a situation to decision-makers who cannot use the full detail set directly.
  • Executive-Level Summary — Keeps only the variables a leadership decision could turn on and drops the operational detail that would not change it — with a note on what was suppressed.
  • Minimum Viable Explanation — States the simplest explanation adequate for the current evidence and audience, with uncertainty and add-back conditions named.

Constraints & Guardrails

Solutions that prevent unacceptable states or actions by encoding limits, invariants, preconditions, safe envelopes, or error-proofing rules.

6 mechanisms · View full solution family

  • Comparison-Class Review Memo — Records, for a given decision, what comparison class each objection actually used and flags where a comparator drifted between aspiration, diagnostic, and decision roles.
  • Post-Resolution Debrief — After the cycle closes, tests whether the resolution's value was actually earned by the preceding tension — and feeds that verdict into how future cycles are spaced.
  • Precedent Distinction Memo — A short written record that names the precedent a case is being matched to and states, point by point, the material differences — so applying the precedent must survive an argument, not just an impression.
  • Shared-Burden Comparison Table — Forces every option onto the same dimensions under the same constraints, so none gets to be abstract and exempt from burdens the others carry.
  • Tension-Curve Rehearsal — Runs the planned tension curve in a sandbox on stand-in audiences first, to find where it drags, breaks, or fails to pay off before it goes live.
  • Tension-Curve Storyboard — Lays out the intended arc — baseline, rising beats, peak, release, aftermath — as a panel-by-panel plan before anything is built or run.

Containment & Isolation

Solutions that keep faults, hazards, conflicts, contamination, or overload from spreading by separating regions, flows, or responsibilities.

  • Genre/Form Fit Checklist — Runs a form borrowed from another genre through a fixed list of fit questions to catch the assumptions it smuggled in from its home context.
  • Legal or Policy Sections — Partitions a rule system into sections of distinct legal scope so each can be interpreted, amended, and enforced without disturbing the rest.

Decoupling & Interfaces

Solutions that reduce harmful dependency by inserting contracts, adapters, abstractions, or replaceable boundaries between interacting parts.

  • Counterframe Register — A record of objections, alternative frames, affected-party interpretations, and evidence challenges that remain visible during window movement.
  • Managed Discourse Retreat Plan — A plan for withdrawing a position from active normalization when further exposure causes harm or when the legitimacy rationale fails.
  • Window Shift Retrospective — A post-shift review that asks what moved, what evidence mattered, who gained or lost voice, and whether the boundary should expand, contract, or stabilize next.

Deliberation & Conflict Resolution

Solutions that structure disagreement, negotiation, arbitration, or collective judgment so incompatible views can reach a workable resolution.

2 mechanisms · View full solution family

  • Precommitment to Dissent Review — A rule fixed before deliberation that binds the decision owner to answer the strongest dissent and names the conditions that will reopen the decision, so review can't be skipped once momentum builds.
  • Silent Start — Opens the meeting with a few minutes of private writing so each participant fixes an independent view before the first — and loudest — voice can anchor the room.

Emergence & Self-Organization

Solutions that shape local rules, interactions, or environmental cues so useful global order can arise without direct central specification.

6 mechanisms · View full solution family

  • Caricature Detection Review — Checks whether the environment describes out-group or rival views in ways their informed holders would reject.
  • Rumor Containment Protocol — Interrupts a propagating false claim by damping its forwarding, injecting a verified counter-signal, and tracking whether it mutates or jumps channels.
  • Steelman Counterposition Brief — Presents rival views in their strongest evidence-bearing form before critique or rejection.
  • Stories and Symbols — Encodes the norm into memorable stories, language, and artifacts — including cautionary tales that mark its edges — so the expectation travels vividly and portably, even where no one is watching.
  • Style Guide Creation — Turns recurring naming, formatting, and communication choices into explicit conventions — often machine-enforceable — so a group's output reads as one consistent voice.
  • Trust-Building Communication — Explains the why, the tradeoffs weighed, and what is still uncertain — and shows how feedback changes the plan — so the change earns legitimacy instead of merely demanding compliance.

Evidence, Inference & Validation

Solutions that gather, test, triangulate, or qualify evidence so claims and decisions match what the observations can actually support.

30 mechanisms · View full solution family

  • Appearance/Reality Audit Checklist — Prompts reviewers to ask whether a statement describes experience, measurement, inference, social convention, or mind-independent reality.
  • Associative Claim Red Team — Challenges a proposed property transfer by asking what would have to be true for the association to be warrant-bearing and what evidence would refute it.
  • Assumption Conversion Prompt — A prompt that converts 'we know' statements into explicit assumptions when the evidence chain is weak or missing.
  • Bridge Assumption Annotation Protocol — Requires analysts to annotate the assumptions used when converting appearances or observations into stronger causal or object-level claims.
  • Burden Shift Detection — Catches when the obligation to prove quietly moves from the claimant to the critic, so 'you can't disprove it' stops passing as evidence.
  • Category Boundary Stability Check — Holds a key term or category to one fixed meaning across the whole argument, catching definitions that drift to dodge counterexamples.
  • Claim-Confidence Warrant Review — A structured check that asks whether the confidence attached to each claim is justified by its warrant strength and stakes.
  • Claim-Evidence-Reasoning Card — Captures a compact claim, evidence trace, and reasoning bridge for review.
  • Claim-Lattice Mapping — Externalizes a sprawling narrative into an explicit graph of its claims and the support, implication, and constraint links between them, so the story can be reasoned about as a structure instead of felt as a flow.
  • Claim-Warrant Matrix — A side-by-side grid that puts many competing claims on rows and their evidence, source quality, and counter-evidence on columns, so warrant can be compared across rivals before any one is believed.
  • Counter-Narrative Probe — Builds the single strongest opposing account of the same facts — the version a sharp skeptic would defend — derives what it predicts we should see, and checks, so the leading story has to beat a real challenger instead of a strawman.
  • Counterexample Probe — Attacks a general claim by manufacturing the case that would make it false, then reports whether the claim survives, narrows, or breaks.
  • Evidence Relation Matrix — Maps traces to claims with provenance, relevance, link type, weight, scope, and defeaters.
  • Evidence-to-Claim Traceability — Links every load-bearing claim to the specific evidence or warrant meant to support it, exposing claims that ride on borrowed authority, on local evidence stretched to a global conclusion, or on nothing at all.
  • Feasible Alternative Comparison — Scores a real option against the best achievable alternative instead of an idealized one, exposing rejections driven by the nirvana fallacy.
  • Formal vs Material Error Gate — Decides whether an argument's defect lives in its logical form or in its content, so formal invalidity is not mislabeled an informal fallacy.
  • Guilt-by-Association Review — Checks whether blame, risk, or disqualification is being assigned because of contact, affiliation, or co-membership without a valid transfer rule.
  • Legal Syllogism Review — Verifies the material facts, hunts for exceptions and defenses, and bounds the holding of a legal argument so the conclusion is no broader than the proven facts and surviving rule support.
  • Logic Checklist — Runs a fixed set of prompts over any argument — hidden premises, equivocal terms, invalid steps — so common reasoning faults are caught by routine rather than by luck.
  • Provenance Lookup Before Publication — A last-gate check that, claim by claim, traces a draft back to where each piece actually came from and credits anything borrowed before it goes public.
  • Red-Team Coherence Review — Convenes an adversarial reviewer whose job is to break the narrative's coherence from the outside — overreaching its own scope, reading it as a hostile stakeholder would, and pitting rival accounts against it — surfacing incoherences insiders have stopped seeing.
  • Revision Diff Review — Compares successive versions of a narrative against the repair each revision was supposed to make, catching the edit that renamed a contradiction, quietly absorbed a counterexample, or reworded a tension instead of resolving it.
  • Source Disclosure Brief — A concise communication explaining the source independence and confidence status behind a suspected cascade.
  • Source-Label Preserving Summary Template — A summary format that forces each condensed statement to carry its source class through compression, so shortening a document can't quietly flatten observed, reported, and generated content into equally-confident prose.
  • Steelman then Refute Protocol — Rebuilds an argument in its strongest fair form before attacking it, so any refutation lands on the position itself and not a caricature.
  • Syllogism Template — Casts a rule-to-case argument into major premise, minor premise, and conclusion so its logical form becomes inspectable before anyone checks whether it is sound.
  • Term-Stability Review — Pins each load-bearing term to a single definition and tracks it through the whole narrative, flagging the passages where a word quietly changes meaning to keep an argument alive — semantic drift used to dodge a contradiction.
  • Trace-to-Claim Diagram — Visualizes trace, source, inference bridge, hypothesis, and defeaters.
  • Transferability Claim Check — Audits the final claims against what the sampled cases can actually support, trimming overreach.
  • Vantage-Bias Interview Protocol — Elicits what the source could know, why they framed it as they did, and what pressures shaped the account.

Governance & Accountability

Solutions that allocate decision rights, oversight, responsibility, transparency, and consequences so power remains answerable and action-owned.

  • Burden-of-Proof Rule — Allocates who must justify what, and to what standard, before a claim is accepted or reopened — so a support chain closes by a fixed rule of responsibility rather than by whoever argues longest.
  • First-Principles Statement — Names the base premises a group will reason up from for one specific decision, and flags what those premises leave uncertain, so the chain of 'why' bottoms out at a chosen, visible foundation.
  • Precommitment Challenge Session — Gives a designated challenger or affected party a bounded, licensed opportunity to attack the leading option's assumptions and resurface alternatives before closure.
  • Sponsor Re-Engagement Notice — A formal, on-the-record prompt to a disengaged role-holder to resume the function — a documented last chance to re-engage before any backfill is activated.

Identity, Reference & Matching

Solutions that establish what an entity is, bind records to the right referent, resolve names, or match cases without confusing near-equivalents.

  • Burden and Standard Alignment Table — Binds each stasis type to the evidence it admits, the burden and threshold it must clear, and the answer form it demands — so proof is matched to the question.
  • Identity-Resonance Message Review — Runs draft appeals through identity-map, authenticity, evidence, stereotype, and autonomy checks before deployment.
  • Point-at-Issue Intake Form — A single front-door form that captures the contested claims in each party's own words and attaches a provisional question-type label before any argument begins.
  • Value-Language Alignment Rubric — Checks whether wording, examples, metaphors, and calls to action fit the audience's own value vocabulary without distortion.

Integration & Composition

Solutions that assemble parts into a functioning whole, reconcile interfaces, and verify that combined behavior preserves required properties.

  • Legal Clause Composition Review — A structured read of an assembled legal instrument for the effect its clauses, definitions, and provisos produce together — catching scope leakage and emergent meaning no single clause signals.
  • Modular Documentation Template — A reusable page skeleton built from typed content modules with allowed-order rules, so pages assembled from shared blocks stay coherent instead of contradicting themselves.
  • Sentence Frame or Message Template — A fixed sentence frame with typed fill-in slots, so many specific messages can be generated from one skeleton and still come out grammatical and on-register.

Knowledge, Memory & Provenance

Solutions that capture, retain, retrieve, transfer, and trace knowledge or records so later users can recover both content and origin.

  • Certainty & Causality Inflation Check — Catches the summary that upgrades the substance's certainty or causality — a hedge hardened into a fact, an association reported as a cause, a subgroup generalized to everyone.
  • Expert Compression Red Team — Has a second reader adversarially hunt the expert's draft for compressed reasoning, skipped steps, and unstated assumptions the author can no longer see.
  • Fact–Argument Crosswalk — Ties each argumentative claim to the dated facts and witness threads that support it, with a guard that stops issue order from manufacturing causation.
  • Headline–Body Consistency Check — Isolates the single claim a headline asserts and tests whether the body actually supports it — at that scope, tense, and force — before it goes out.
  • Material-Divergence Red Team — Puts an adversarial team on the summary alone to manufacture the most damaging defensible misreading — and log it before a hostile outsider finds it.
  • Press-Release Claim Review — Reads a promotional summary — a press release or announcement — against the study or report it publicizes, grading each headline claim as supported, overstated, or unsupported with the author's incentive to amplify held in view.
  • Reveal-Order Storyboard — Lays out, beat by beat, the order in which each fact becomes visible to the audience and the reason each reveal sits where it does.
  • Summary-Diff Review — Reviews the change between two versions of a summary, so an edit that quietly flips a modal verb or drops a not is caught at the diff rather than after it ships.
  • Summary-Only Reader Test — Puts the summary in front of readers who never see the body and measures what they conclude, catching the gap between what the summary says and what a summary-only audience takes away.
  • Temporal Marker Style Guide — Standardizes the dates, phase labels, and recap cues that tell the audience where in time they are after every jump.

Learning & Scaffolding

Solutions that sequence practice, feedback, examples, and support so capability grows and transfers beyond the original learning setting.

4 mechanisms · View full solution family

  • Guided Research Question — A deliberately engineered opening question — narrow enough to act on, open enough to require evidence, and pitched at what learners already believe — that gives an inquiry its direction without giving away its answer.
  • Social Permission Script — Gives people the exact words and the standing sanction to perform a socially risky known-correct action, so speaking up or stepping in stops feeling forbidden.
  • Spatial Mnemonic Route — Uses a route, room sequence, path, or map as the retrieval scaffold for ordered material.
  • Structured Review Sequence — Splits a group review into ordered phases — orient, review evidence, interpret, challenge, synthesize, decide — so complex judgment cannot collapse into immediate advocacy.

Mapping & Transformation

Solutions that translate between representations, coordinate systems, scales, formats, or states while preserving the relationships that matter.

  • Mnemonic Cue Pairing — Binds each item to a deliberately built, self-carried cue — a keyword, image, or memory route — so a reliable retrieval key is guaranteed present at the moment of recall.
  • Resolution Claim Annotation — Attaches to a transformed output an explicit note of the resolution it can and cannot support, matched to who will read it, so a detailed-looking chart is not misread as claiming impossible simultaneous precision.
  • Sense-Boundary Comparison Table — Lays the source, receiving, legacy, specialist, public, and operational senses of a term side by side so their boundaries and collisions become legible at a glance.
  • Service Scope Statement — A published statement of what a service does and does not deliver — the requests it handles, the outcomes it promises, what falls outside it, and where out-of-scope requests should go instead.
  • Side-Swap Test — Swaps the two sides of a relation and asks whether the arrangement still reads as acceptable — the fastest way to expose an asymmetry that only survives because no one pictures it reversed.
  • Viewpoint-Omission Audit — Reviews what the chosen station, crop, and projection hide, shrink, or flatter — and requires alternate evidence wherever an omission carries real consequence.

Negotiation & Strategic Interaction

Solutions that account for other agents' incentives, reactions, commitments, bargaining power, and counter-moves when outcomes are interdependent.

  • Adversarial Editor or Red-Team Review — Assigns a reviewer whose job is to attack the claim — hunting the leaked interest, the buried counter-evidence, and the framing that makes a preferred conclusion look inevitable — before it reaches the audience.
  • Attribution and Sourcing Standard — The house rules for naming and characterizing sources — when a source may be unnamed, how their proximity and incentive must be described, and what the audience is told about how the information was obtained.
  • Headline and Lead Claim Consistency Review — Checks that the headline and opening lines assert no more than the body can warrant — pulling back verbs, certainty, and scope until a skimming reader's takeaway matches the evidence.
  • Off-Ramp Offer Protocol — A repeatable way to offer the other party a face-saving exit at each rung — a concrete path to stop that costs them less dignity than climbing does.
  • Zero-Sum Framing Challenge — Forces reviewers to test whether a zero-sum frame is structural, rhetorical, or masking a variable-sum alternative, and routes each slice accordingly.

Solutions that explore alternatives under objectives and constraints, prune infeasible regions, and improve a candidate toward a chosen criterion.

  • Mystery Frame — Packages the unknown as a bounded puzzle or unresolved situation so people can orient toward discovery rather than passive reception.
  • Provocative Question Prompt — Implements the knowledge gap by asking a question that reveals an unresolved difference, anomaly, possibility, or missing explanation.

Ordering, Sequencing & Dependencies

Solutions that arrange steps or events according to precedence, causality, readiness, or dependency so work happens in a valid order.

  • Before/After Contrast Framing — Uses a preserved prior-state and a later-state frame, joined by an explicit transition, to make change, progress, degradation, or transformation legible as a temporal difference.
  • Legal Issue Tree — A structured tree that breaks a legal claim into its elements, exceptions, and evidence questions, so a verdict can be assembled by resolving each leaf against the governing standard.
  • Ordered Reveal Sequence — Presents elements one at a time in a deliberately chosen order so each new element is interpreted against the one just before it rather than lost in a cluttered simultaneous field.
  • Service Recovery Playbook — A frontline script for the moments after a service failure — acknowledge and apologize, empower someone to act, then run the ordered recovery of fix, compensate, and follow up.

Participation, Norms & Culture

Solutions that shape belonging, legitimacy, shared expectations, collective practice, and the willingness of people to contribute or comply.

  • Alternative Frame Workshop — Convenes participants to generate and stress-test genuinely different ways to name, classify, or govern the same situation, while separating what a reframe could actually change from the hard constraints it can't.
  • Apology / Repair Protocol — Separates the layers a 'sorry' can perform — sympathy, acknowledgment, responsibility, restitution, commitment to change, closure — and enacts the one the situation actually needs, then checks it was accepted.
  • Autonomy-Supportive Framing — Presents a norm as something a reasoning person can endorse — with the choice, the rationale, and a real way to object left intact — rather than as obedience demanded by authority.
  • Dedication or Blessing Statement — Fixes an object's meaning in spoken words — naming what it stands for, whom it honours, and what it commits the group to — so the meaning is declared aloud rather than left to inference.
  • Expert Voice Curation — Selects and sequences credible interpreters who can explain, defend, or normalize the frame for different audiences.
  • Expert-to-Public Translation — Converts expert reasoning, evidence, or technical claims into accessible public-facing explanation without pretending complexity is absent.
  • Leader "I Was Wrong" Story — A high-status person publicly narrates a consequential belief they got wrong, the evidence that changed their mind, and the better action that followed.
  • Media Agenda Framing — Uses editorial selection, expert commentary, issue salience, and repeated explanation to make the frame visible and plausible in public sensemaking.
  • Mistake-to-Principle Story Template — A reusable template that distills a specific mistake into a transferable principle, packaged as a memorable before/turn/lesson story.
  • Narrative Identification Prompt — Uses stories of role, craft, mission, or consequence — and the symbols that carry them — to help a person recognize the norm as part of the kind of person they are trying to become.
  • Narrative Repetition Cascade — Repeats the same core story through speeches, articles, trainings, reports, meetings, and exemplars until the frame becomes familiar.
  • Norm-Based Request Framing — Words the ask so it lands as a fitting response to a shared obligation — naming why this matters now, what success is, and the reciprocal norm that makes helping the natural thing to do rather than an imposition.
  • Public Reason Briefing — States the reasons, assumptions, tradeoffs, evidence limits, and alternatives behind the preferred frame.
  • Rumor Control — Collects circulating claims, traces how and where they spread, and slows their repetition within a bounded window without amplifying the harmful details.
  • Shared Mission Framing — Frames cooperation through a credible common purpose, shared future, or broader membership that participants can endorse without losing subgroup identity.
  • Silence Signal Review Board — Reviews high-stakes interpretations of silence or nonresponse where power, consent, safety, or exclusion risks are present.
  • Stakeholder-Specific Brief — Creates audience-specific versions of the same message for executives, frontline staff, customers, community members, regulators, students, or partners.
  • Trust-Tier Badging — Bins subjects into a few coarse trust tiers shown as a badge, and attaches concrete treatment to each tier.
  • Trusted Messenger Briefing — Equips credible intermediaries with aligned facts, uncertainty language, and harm-aware framing so a correction reaches audiences a central authority cannot.
  • White Paper and Policy Brief Pipeline — Turns a frame into portable technical language, citations, policy options, and implementation-ready arguments.

  • Evidence-to-Claim Matrix — Lays each interpretive claim beside the marks that support, conflict with, or fail to appear for it, so a reading's narrative force can be told apart from its evidentiary warrant.
  • Pragmatic Force Walkthrough — Recovers what an utterance is doing — asserting, ordering, promising, warning, joking — by walking its literal content through the situation and conventions that fix its force.
  • Precedent Comparison Table — Bounds a reading by laying the current case beside authoritative prior readings and mapping, feature by feature, which precedent it actually resembles.
  • Stakeholder Meaning Check — Tests a reading against the people it is about or for — do the affected communities recognize the meaning as theirs? — before the interpretation is acted on.
  • Sufficiency Calibration Checklist — A checklist that calibrates how much detail is enough for this audience and stake — pruning overload and filling gaps so a message is neither too thin nor too bloated to act on.

Reframing & Sensemaking

Solutions that change the interpretive frame, surface hidden assumptions, or organize ambiguous experience into a more useful account.

  • After-Action Story Review — Audits the story that will become the official lesson after an incident, project, campaign, or crisis.
  • Contextual Correction Card — A compact correction or context artifact that redirects interpretation without making the target claim, image, or rumor more memorable than the correction.
  • Legal Interpretation Memo — Documents candidate readings, governing context, precedent tensions, coherence tests, and remaining ambiguity.
  • Mission Rebuilding — Revises or rebuilds an organization's official mission after its inherited purpose has lost credibility, tying the new mission to responsibilities and action.

  • Narrative Audit Table — Creates a structured table for selected events, omissions, causal links, focal actors, themes, alternatives, and resulting revisions.
  • Narrative Reframing Brief — A document that packages an already-chosen deeper frame into concrete guidance across communication, policy, and design — naming who must carry it into each channel.
  • Necessity-Possibility Red Team — A review exercise that challenges claims of necessity, impossibility, or permission with boundary cases and defeaters.
  • Power-Effect Mapping — Marks how the story legitimates some actors, normalizes some outcomes, delegitimizes others, and makes certain alternatives seem unthinkable.
  • Proportional Public Rationale — A bounded explanation used when visible action is necessary and opacity would produce stronger cover-up narratives.
  • Red-Team Suppression Narrative Review — A simulation in which reviewers ask what hostile, curious, or skeptical audiences would infer from the planned suppression act.
  • Scale-Shift Metaphor — Distorts the relative size of elements within a single image so the mismatch itself carries an abstract claim about power, importance, or proportion.
  • Scenario Reframe Probe — Stress-tests a proposed reframe by running it across ordinary, edge, and future cases to see whether it actually changes any decision.
  • Sense Distinction Matrix — Separates the different meanings, scopes, and reference classes hiding behind one repeated term, so a merely verbal contradiction stops masquerading as a real one.

  • Visual Framing Audit — Rebuilds a chart or image with alternate scales, colors, and crops to see how much of the reader's takeaway comes from visual encoding rather than the data.

Representation & Modeling

Solutions that construct schemas, models, diagrams, abstractions, or formal descriptions that make structure available for reasoning.

  • Contextual Reentry Memo — Reintroduces genre, period, audience, authority, and use after the grain has been inspected — so context meets an artifact-grounded reading instead of quietly deciding it in advance.
  • Counterreading Stress Review — Builds the strongest rival reading on purpose and makes the favored one either explain the marks it resists or narrow its own claim.
  • Micro-to-Macro Claim Matrix — For each consequential claim, lays out the ladder from located marks up through observation, pattern, and scope to implication, so a reviewer can accept or reject each rung independently.
  • Naming Review — Reviews terms, labels, feature names, program names, or category names for misleading connotations, hidden assumptions, and audience misreadings.
  • Safety Symbol Standard — Regulator-aligned hazard, prohibition, and protective-action symbols built with redundancy so a misread — where a misread can hurt someone — is rare.
  • Sequence and Placement Map — Charts the order, adjacency, nesting, and framing of a text's parts so that meaning carried by where something sits — not just what it says — becomes visible and arguable.
  • Visual Metaphor Mapping Grid — Maps visible source-domain elements to target-domain meanings and records which entailments are intended, excluded, or ambiguous.
  • Warning Label Redesign — Revises warning language, icons, salience, placement, and examples when hazard interpretation evidence shows mismatch.

Risk, Robustness & Uncertainty

Solutions that make uncertainty explicit, limit downside, preserve acceptable behavior across variation, or prepare contingencies for adverse outcomes.

  • Face-Saving Negotiation Move — Frames a climb-down so it reads as principled, mutual, or externally compelled — removing the reputational penalty that makes each side fear backing off will look like losing.
  • Risk Framing — Re-describes the same uncertain option under alternative frames — full loss, bounded bet, status-quo comparison — so a distorted sense of the downside can be reset against evidence and safeguards.

Scaling & Capacity

Solutions that match capability to load, grow or shrink safely, and manage how structure and performance change with size.

  • Associative Cue Preloading — Pre-loads the interpretive frame — language, examples, and signals — so an audience reads the eventual trigger the intended way, within an explicit consent boundary.
  • Formal / Informal Transition Marker — Uses a phrase, agenda break, visual label, or procedural marker to distinguish casual discussion from formal review, commitment, decision, or record-making.
  • Negotiation Derailment Repair Protocol — Detects when a negotiation is hardening positions instead of converging, and applies structured repair moves — reframe, separate issues, caucus, escalate — without coercing false agreement.
  • Role-Hat Prompt — Names the role or frame from which a participant is speaking, such as "as legal reviewer," "as facilitator," or "as coach."
  • Rumor Dampening — Reshapes the timing, channel, and repetition of a correction so responding to a rumor stops re-exciting the very attention that spreads it.
  • Rumor Edge Containment — Meets a spreading narrative at the communities it is newly entering, pre-bunking through trusted messengers before the rumor sets.
  • Stage-Specific Communication Plan — Implements the archetype by matching message content, audience, timing, tone, and disclosure level to the current phase of a project, crisis, treatment, negotiation, or rollout.
  • Staged Announcement — Releases information in planned stages so recipients can understand, prepare, and respond instead of receiving everything at once.
  • Staggered Communications — Deliberately offsets repeated messages so they do not all land at once and amplify anxiety or herd response, while still reaching everyone who needs them.
  • Style Guide Revision — Encodes an audit's decision as a durable rule in the style guide — what to mark and how, which asymmetries are justified and why, and how compliance is checked going forward.
  • Support Escalation Script — Announces that an interaction is moving from ordinary help into escalation, complaint handling, safety review, or specialist handoff.

  • Sentinel Uptake Monitor — Places watchers across the signal's channels to catch, early, when and where an adjacent audience picks it up and begins to amplify it.
  • Signal Cue Audit — Dissects the signal's explicit and implicit cues to find where a word, number, image, or omission will be read differently by a neighbouring audience.
