Binary Validity Test¶
Diagnostic test — instantiates Option-Space Reopening
Adjudicates whether a two-way choice is a genuine hard binary or a false dilemma — and, when the binary survives, records the real constraint that keeps the middle closed.
A Binary Validity Test is the one mechanism in this family whose job includes confirming a binary. Faced with an "A or B" that admits no middle, it asks whether the excluded region is closed by a real constraint — physical, legal, logical, temporal, or safety — or merely by habit, incentive, rhetoric, or failure of imagination. If the constraint is real, the test certifies the binary: it writes down why the middle is genuinely unavailable and passes the decision through to a two-way choice, deliberately. If the constraint does not survive scrutiny, the test fails the frame and hands it back for reopening. Its defining move is this two-sided verdict — it is as willing to defend a true dichotomy as to break a false one, which is what separates it from mechanisms that only ever expand.
Example¶
A regional airline's flight is on final approach when the crew must decide: land or go around. A passenger-experience analyst reviewing the go/no-go logic later treats it as a candidate for reopening and runs a Binary Validity Test. The tempting "third options" are things like slow down and re-assess or partially configure and hold — but the test checks the constraint. On short final the aircraft's energy state, the runway geometry, and the seconds available mean there is no stable intermediate configuration: the physics and the time budget genuinely exclude the middle. The test therefore does not break this binary; it certifies it, and records the justification — "energy and time constraints on final approach admit only land or go-around" — so the next reviewer does not waste effort re-litigating it.
Contrast the same test one layer up, at the dispatch decision hours earlier, framed as "fly the scheduled route or cancel." Here the excluded middle — delay, reroute, swap aircraft — is closed only by a scheduling convenience, not by physics. That constraint fails the legitimacy check, so the test fails the frame and sends it back through the reentry gate to be reopened. Same mechanism, opposite verdicts, decided entirely by whether the constraint is real.
How it works¶
- Isolate the excluded middle. Name what the binary rules out — the compromise, hybrid, staged, or abstention options an "A or B" makes unsayable.
- Interrogate the closing constraint. For each excluded option, ask what specifically forbids it, and classify that reason as a hard constraint (physical / legal / logical / temporal / safety) or a soft one (custom, incentive, rhetorical pressure, missing imagination, authority scope).
- Render the verdict. If every excluded option is closed by a hard, documented constraint, the binary is valid; otherwise it is false and must reopen.
- Justify or reopen. On a valid binary, write the residual justification and let the decision proceed as a two-way choice. On a false one, route it through the reentry gate so a recovery mechanism can populate the middle.
Tuning parameters¶
- Constraint bar — how hard a reason must be to count as "real." Set it high and you break more binaries (and risk denying a true one); set it low and you rubber-stamp coercive frames.
- Evidence demanded — whether a claimed constraint must be documented (a regulation cited, a physical limit shown) or may be asserted. Documentation is the antidote to constraints that only sound hard.
- Reversibility weighting — how much the stakes and reversibility of the decision raise the bar. A cheap reversible choice can accept a rough test; an irreversible one warrants demanding proof of every excluded cell.
- Standing of "abstention" — whether do neither / not yet is admitted as a live third cell by default. Including it exposes most false binaries immediately, since forced choices usually suppress the null option.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is even-handedness: it protects the archetype from its own overreach. Not every two-way choice is a fallacy, and a mechanism that could only ever expand would eventually deny real hard constraints; this test is the guard that lets the pattern say "this binary is genuine" with a documented reason. Naming the target — the false dilemma, an either/or presented as exhaustive when it is not — gives it a precise thing to detect.[n1]
Its failure mode is the mirror image of the fallacy it hunts: the middle-ground bias, reflexively assuming a compromise must exist and thereby refusing to certify a binary that is in fact real (the demand to "split the difference" on a question that has no coherent middle). A test tuned to always find a third option is as broken as a frame that always offers two. The classic misuse is running it as advocacy — starting from the wish to break the binary and lowering the constraint bar until it does. The guarding discipline is to fix the constraint bar and evidence standard before looking at the specific case, and to let the test return "valid binary" as a real, acceptable outcome.
How it implements the components¶
This test fills the adjudication-and-gate components — it decides the status of a two-cell partition rather than describing its structure:

It does not enumerate the partition's cells or check its dividing axis (asserted_partition_statement, exhaustiveness_claim_marker, partition_dimension_audit) — that structural audit is Exhaustive Partition Audit's job, which runs first to establish the partition this test then adjudicates.
