Polyphonic Synthesis Memo¶

Summarizes a whole while preserving which line contributed which meaning or constraint.
Most summaries buy readability by erasing sources: the lines are melted into one authorial voice and you can no longer tell who contributed what. Polyphonic Synthesis Memo is the written artifact that refuses that trade. It presents the whole as a coherent, navigable account while keeping every claim, constraint, and disagreement attributed to the line it came from — so a reader gets one intelligible document that is also a faithful record of its parts. Its defining move is attribution-preserving synthesis: coherence without amalgamation, a summary that is legible precisely because it never pretends the lines spoke in unison.
Example¶
A city is deciding whether to pedestrianize a downtown corridor, and four lines have fed into the question: a transportation-engineering study, a small-business coalition, a disability-access advocate, and an environmental group. The usual staff summary would blend these into a smooth recommendation and lose the texture — the mayor's office would never see that the access advocate's concern and the environmental group's proposal are in direct tension. Instead, the analyst writes a Polyphonic Synthesis Memo.
The memo reads as one coherent argument about the corridor, but every load-bearing sentence carries its source: "[Engineering] projects a 12% throughput drop on the parallel avenue; [Business coalition] accepts this if loading zones are preserved; [Access] holds that curb-to-curb pedestrianization removes the drop-off points wheelchair users depend on — this is unresolved." A short reference key at the top translates each line's shorthand and points to its full submission. The memo's synthesis section states what the whole implies, but the disagreements are carried forward as named tensions rather than averaged into a false consensus. The decision-maker reads one document and still sees four voices — including the minority one that a blended summary would have buried.
How it works¶
- Synthesize for one reader, cite for every line. The memo is written as a single coherent account, but each substantive claim is tagged to the line that made it, so provenance survives compression.
- Anchor the translation. A reference key defines each line's terms and links back to its full source, letting a reader navigate from the summary into any original without losing the thread.
- Carry tensions, don't dissolve them. Disagreements between lines are stated as attributed, unresolved tensions rather than smoothed into a consensus that never happened.
- Audit for erasure. Before release, the memo is checked so that no line present in the inputs has vanished from the output — minority contributions especially.
Tuning parameters¶
- Attribution density — how granularly claims are sourced, from every sentence to major sections. Denser attribution is more faithful but heavier to read; sparser is smoother but risks blur.
- Synthesis weight — how much the memo commits to an integrated conclusion versus staying a structured record of the lines. More synthesis is more useful to a decider; too much drifts toward erasing the parts.
- Reference depth — how far the anchors reach (a term key, a citation, the full source). Deeper anchoring supports scrutiny at the cost of length.
- Tension prominence — whether disagreements sit in the body or in a dedicated section. Foregrounding tensions protects minority lines but can make the memo feel unsettled.
- Length budget — the ceiling that forces choices about what to compress.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it gives a decision-maker the thing they usually cannot have at once: a summary short enough to act on and a record honest enough to trust, with the sources still visible. It is the direct guard against the archetype's signature failure — important voices included in the process but flattened in the final write-up. Preserving a dissenting line explicitly is the documentary equivalent of a minority report.[n1]
Its failure mode is false balance dressed as fidelity: attributing everything can smuggle in a pretense that all lines are equally weighty, letting a fringe claim sit typographically beside a well-evidenced one. A related misuse is attribution theater — citing sources meticulously while the synthesis quietly tilts toward one line's framing. The guarding discipline is that the memo must distinguish whose claim it is from how well supported it is, and that the erasure audit be run against the raw inputs, not against a prior draft that may already have dropped a voice.

It does not judge whether the whole meets a coherence standard (coherence_criterion) or balance the live prominence of lines (voice_balance_and_mix_rule) — both belong to Voice Mix Dashboard; the memo records and attributes, it does not measure or mix.
