Micro-to-Macro Claim Matrix¶
Evidence-integration artifact — instantiates Textual Close-Reading Mode
For each consequential claim, lays out the ladder from located marks up through observation, pattern, and scope to implication, so a reviewer can accept or reject each rung independently.
Once the grain has been inspected, a reading still has to show its work. The Micro-to-Macro Claim Matrix is organized not by mark but by claim: one row per consequential interpretation, and columns that expose the inferential ladder — the located marks, the observation drawn from them, the relations and pattern, the scope, the defeaters considered, and the implication that follows. Its defining move is to make each rung separately contestable. A reader who disagrees with the conclusion is forced to say where — "I accept your marks but reject the pattern step" — which turns an interpretive clash into a diagnosable disagreement about a single link. It gathers no new evidence; it arranges evidence others located so the jump from small marks to large claims can be reproduced by someone who was not in the room.
Example¶
A plan reviewer at a building department must defend the finding "this egress stairwell is non-compliant." Rather than assert it, she builds one matrix row. The marks: the code's modal "shall," a numeric clear-width requirement (illustratively ≈44 inches), and the defined term "occupant load." The observation: the as-built width measures 42 inches. The relation: a cross-reference scopes that width requirement to this occupancy class. The pattern/scope: it applies here because occupant load exceeds the triggering threshold. The defeater: an exception clause for existing buildings — checked, and it does not reach this case. The implication: non-compliant; remediation required.
At appeal, the builder's counsel does not relitigate the whole finding. Because every rung is exposed, the argument narrows to exactly one cell — whether the occupancy classification (the scope step) is correct. That is the payoff: the matrix converts "is it non-compliant?" into "which rung is wrong?", and the answer to the smaller question settles the larger one. The named anchors here (a real building code, occupant load) are genuine; the dimensions are illustrative.
How it works¶
What distinguishes the matrix from an ordinary annotation table is that its columns are the warrant layers, not the marks. Each consequential claim gets one row; each cell holds a different kind of thing — a located mark, an observation, a relation, a scope statement, a rebuttal — so that granting one does not commit you to the next. Defeaters and scope limits are carried inside the row, so a claim travels with its own challenges and its own boundary rather than as a bare assertion. The artifact is deliberately reviewer-facing: its success condition is that a stranger can walk the row and land where the author landed, or say precisely where they get off.
Tuning parameters¶
- Claim granularity — how finely you split "one claim" into rows. Finer rows isolate disputes cleanly but multiply bookkeeping.
- Layer depth — how many rungs (mark, observation, pattern, scope, defeater, implication) you separate. More rungs make the warrant fully auditable but heavier to fill.
- Defeater-inclusion threshold — how strong a rival must be to earn a cell. Set it low and every quibble clutters the row; set it high and the real counter-case can hide.
- Scope explicitness — whether each claim carries an explicit statement of what it does not assert. Explicit scope blocks overreach but costs words.
- Evidence-link discipline — whether each mark cell is a live locator back to the source or a convenient paraphrase. Live locators resist fragment-laundering; paraphrases read faster and drift.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is accountability: it makes interpretive dispute diagnosable rather than a standoff of conclusions, which is why legal, policy, safety, and scholarly reviews reach for it — settings where the path must be reproducible, not merely the verdict. The row structure is essentially a tabular warrant chain.[1]
Its failure mode is that a neat grid lends false authority. A fully populated matrix can be confidently wrong if its mark cells are decontextualized or its pattern step is a leap; the tidy layout hides the softness. And it is easily run backwards — begin from the conclusion you want and populate the rows to make it look warranted, the reading that "becomes the answer first and recruits quotations afterward." The discipline that guards against this is to fill the mark and observation rungs before the reading rung, and to let a separate challenger attack the weakest cell: the matrix faithfully records defeaters, but it does not generate them.
How it implements the components¶
micro_to_macro_warrant_chain— the matrix is this chain made tabular: the separated, independently acceptable ladder from mark to implication.interpretive_question_and_scope— each row is one scoped consequential claim, so the artifact operationalizes the interpretive question per claim and records each claim's boundary.exact_mark_evidence_trace— the mark cells carry located evidence with enough surrounding context to be reviewed, not stripped fragments.
It does not produce the evidence it arranges — recurrence comes from Motif Concordance and Recurrence Map, placement from Sequence and Placement Map, principled absence from Omission and Negative-Evidence Audit — and it does not generate the counter-cases it records; that is Counterreading Stress Review.

Notes¶
The matrix is an integrator, not a source, so its trustworthiness is capped by the traces feeding it: a beautiful grid built over careless marks is still wrong, and the elegance can disguise that. It is also the natural hand-off to Paraphrase-Difference Test, which later checks that any summary preserves what the matrix actually warranted.
