Line-by-Line Annotation Protocol¶
Annotation protocol — instantiates Textual Close-Reading Mode
Walks a bounded passage one line at a time, recording every material mark, observation, and question in sequence — without letting any of them collapse into a summary yet.
Before a passage can be argued about, someone has to have actually read all of it — every line, in order, at full resolution. The Line-by-Line Annotation Protocol is that first disciplined pass. It moves through a bounded passage one unit at a time and writes down, beside each line, the marks that seem to carry weight, the observations they prompt, the questions they raise, and any implication that occurs — but keeps all of it provisional, deliberately not yet resolving the notes into a reading. Its defining discipline is coverage in sequence: nothing is skipped because it seems obvious, and nothing is promoted to a conclusion before the whole passage has been walked. That is what separates it from a table that sorts observations into columns or a matrix that assembles a claim; this is the raw, ordered capture the others are built on.
Example¶
A teacher runs the protocol on Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" instead of reaching for the familiar be-a-nonconformist gloss. Line by line, she records what is actually on the page: the two roads described, twice, as worn about the same; the choice between them presented as essentially arbitrary; and then, in the last stanza, a future self who will sigh and call that choice decisive "ages and ages hence." Beside each she notes an observation and a question — if the roads were equal, why will he later claim one made all the difference? — and marks each as provisional, not yet a reading.
The popular gloss wanted to arrive on the first line; the protocol makes it wait. By the end she has a set of located notes and one sharp, evidence-backed question about the gap between the choice as made and the choice as later remembered — the material a full reading (and any counterreading) will be built from. Nothing has been concluded, and that is the point: the pass produced evidence, not a verdict.
How it works¶
- Fix the unit and the boundary first. Decide what counts as a line (verse, clause, sentence, screen row) and where the passage begins and ends, so the pass has a defined grain and a stopping edge.
- Walk in reading order, capturing four things separately. For each unit: the exact mark and its locator, the observation it prompts, the question it raises, and any provisional implication — kept in distinct registers so an implication never masquerades as an observation.
- Hold the deferral rule. No note is promoted to the reading during the pass; the gloss that wants to arrive first is written down as provisional and made to wait.
- Flag rather than resolve. Ambiguities and cross-references are marked for hand-off, not settled here.
Tuning parameters¶
- Unit size — whether a line, a clause, or a whole sentence is the annotated unit. Finer units catch more but multiply volume and can drop below the size at which a mark is stable.
- Selectivity threshold — how salient a mark must be to earn a note. Set it low and the pass is exhaustive but buries the load-bearing detail in commentary; set it high and it is fast but misses the sleeper mark.
- Register separation — how strictly mark, observation, question, and implication are kept apart. Strict separation is what preserves the deferral; relax it and conclusions leak into the evidence.
- Annotation medium — margin, interlinear, or side-table. A roomier medium lets each note carry more of its surrounding context; a cramped one invites decontextualized fragments.
- Pass count — a single sweep or several. Whether another sweep is still worth running is a call the Interpretive Saturation Log makes, not this protocol.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is brute: it makes you read all of a passage at full resolution before you are allowed to summarize it, which is how the sleeper detail — the one mid-line break or pronoun shift that changes everything — survives long enough to be noticed. It converts a reading into a set of located, reviewable notes rather than an impression.
Its honest failure mode is unselective commentary: with the threshold set too low the pass produces a wall of undifferentiated notes in which nothing is load-bearing, and it does not scale past a bounded passage. Its classic misuse is running the protocol to confirm a gloss already held — annotating only the marks that fit and skimming the rest, which dresses a foregone conclusion in the costume of close reading. The disciplines that guard against both are the selectivity threshold and the deferral rule: annotate what could change the answer, and refuse to let the pass conclude anything.[1]
How it implements the components¶
The Line-by-Line Annotation Protocol fills the capture side of the archetype — the components that turn a passage into located, provisional evidence:
grain_ladder_and_unit_boundary— it fixes the annotated unit (line, clause) and the passage boundary, setting the resolution every later step inherits.exact_mark_evidence_trace— each note is pinned to a stable locator with enough surrounding text to be reviewed, not a floating fragment.paraphrase_deferral_gate— the without collapsing them rule: glosses and summaries are kept provisional during the pass.
It does not build the formal-feature analysis (the Diction, Syntax, and Punctuation Trace), assemble the argument (the Micro-to-Macro Claim Matrix), or decide when reading is done (the Interpretive Saturation Log); it supplies the raw marks those consume.

Notes¶
The protocol is defined for a bounded passage. On a long document it is a sampling instrument, not a whole-corpus method: you run it on the passages the interpretive question makes material and let cheaper scans cover the rest. Trying to annotate everything line-by-line is the failure mode, not the ideal.
