Indexes every occurrence of a chosen term or form and maps how its sense shifts from one appearance to the next, so recurrence is read as movement rather than counted as frequency.

The Motif Concordance and Recurrence Map follows a single repeated element — a word, image, phrase, or form — across the whole text and asks what its return does. The concordance is the located index: every occurrence, with its position. The recurrence map is the interpretive layer laid over that index: it records how each appearance differs from the last in sense, weight, and register. Its defining insistence is that frequency is not importance. A tally of hits is inert; the tool earns its keep only when it explains how the motif changes across the text — literal to figurative, incidental to load-bearing — so that repetition reads as a trajectory rather than a count.

Example

A reader working through Shakespeare's Macbeth tracks the recurring image of blood. The concordance locates each appearance across the play; the recurrence map then charts the motif's migration. Early on, blood is literal — the gore of battle, a badge of valour. After the murder it turns inward and moral: a stain that will not wash, a mark of guilt that spreads from the hands to the conscience to the whole realm. By the close it has become the play's index of irreversible act. The interpretive payoff sits in the deltas between occurrences, not in the fact that the word appears dozens of times (an illustrative figure). Because the trajectory is mapped, the reader can advance a claim — "blood is the play's measure of guilt that cannot be undone" — and show the movement that warrants it, rather than gesturing at raw repetition. The work named here is real; no invented lines are put in its mouth.

How it works

The tool begins from the interpretive question, which fixes which recurring element is worth following — a motif is chosen, not stumbled upon. It then builds an exhaustive located index of occurrences (a concordance is a real philological instrument), and for each occurrence records not just that it appears but how it has shifted from the previous one: sense, speaker, register, intensity. Interpretation lives in those transitions. What distinguishes it from mechanical counting is that a flat occurrence list is treated as raw material; the reading is the shape of the change across positions.

Tuning parameters

  • Motif boundary — how tightly the tracked form is defined, from an exact lemma to a whole semantic field ("blood / red / stain"). A wider net catches resonance but dilutes rigor.
  • Variation sensitivity — how large a shift between occurrences counts as meaningful movement rather than noise.
  • Position weighting — whether occurrences at structural hinges (opening, climax, close) count for more than mid-stream ones.
  • Frequency floor — the minimum number of occurrences before a pattern may be asserted, guarding against reading a motif into one or two hits.
  • Corpus scope — single work, an author's corpus, or a whole genre. Widening it tests whether the motif is personal or merely conventional — the point at which the work hands off to Parallel-Passage Comparison.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it converts a repeated word into an interpretable arc and surfaces motifs a single linear pass slides past. Its failure mode is the reverse of its strength: frequency masquerading as significance — high-count function words recur constantly and mean nothing by it. And the tool is readily run backwards into pattern-hunting: name the motif you have already decided matters, then harvest the occurrences that fit and quietly drop the ones that don't.[1] The discipline that keeps it honest is to fix the motif and the counting rule before reading the trajectory, and to account explicitly for the occurrences that resist the claimed movement rather than pretending they aren't there.

How it implements the components

  • formal_feature_inventory — the tracked motif is a formal feature (a diction or imagery item) selected from the inventory and followed across the whole text.

It handles recurrence only: the omission facet of the register belongs to Omission and Negative-Evidence Audit, and cross-passage contrast for convention belongs to Parallel-Passage Comparison. It locates occurrences but does not chart the text's overall structure — that is Sequence and Placement Map.

[1] Apophenia — the tendency to perceive meaningful patterns among unrelated things. In motif work it is the standing hazard: a reader primed for a theme finds "recurrences" everywhere, which is why the counting rule and the not-fitting occurrences must both be fixed before the trajectory is read.
