Claim-Warrant Matrix¶
Template — instantiates Warranted Belief Formation
A side-by-side grid that puts many competing claims on rows and their evidence, source quality, and counter-evidence on columns, so warrant can be compared across rivals before any one is believed.
A Claim-Warrant Matrix is a template for the situation where several claims are competing for the same belief slot and you cannot yet say which deserves it. One row per rival claim; columns for the evidence behind it, the quality and provenance of each source, the counter-evidence against it, and the reading of the data it assumes. Its defining move — the thing no sibling does — is forcing every claim into the same grid at the same time, with a mandatory counter-evidence column, so warrant is judged comparatively rather than claim-by-claim. A lone claim examined alone almost always looks supportable; the matrix makes support visible only in contrast to what would support its rivals, and it exposes evidence that is "consistent with everything" (and therefore diagnostic of nothing).
Example¶
An analyst is trying to explain why a key overseas supplier's shipments dropped 40% last quarter. Four rival propositions go on the rows: (1) an undisclosed financial crisis, (2) a deliberate shift of capacity to a competitor, (3) a local infrastructure disruption, (4) normal seasonal variance mislabeled. The columns fill in: satellite imagery of the plant, port records, a mid-level employee's testimony, an industry newsletter, and — crucially — for each row, what evidence argues against it.
The pattern that emerges is not "which claim has the most supporting evidence" but "which claim survives its counter-evidence." The financial-crisis row has vivid support but is contradicted by the plant running full shifts in the imagery. The infrastructure row is dull but nothing contradicts it. The matrix's discipline — borrowed from the analysis of competing hypotheses[n1] — is to disbelieve on contradiction rather than believe on confirmation, and it moves the analyst's tentative pick from the dramatic story to the boring, unrefuted one. The matrix does not declare the winner adopted; it just makes the comparison legible enough that a downstream gate can.
How it works¶
- One row per candidate claim, stated as a distinct proposition, including the mundane and the null-hypothesis rivals people skip.
- Evidence and source columns record what supports each claim and how good each source is — provenance, independence, and credibility, not just a citation.
- A counter-evidence column is mandatory for every row; a row with an empty counter column is treated as under-examined, not as strong.
- A frame/reading column notes what interpretation each claim assumes, so a single ambiguous observation is not silently counted as support for two incompatible readings.
- Scan by column, not by row — the same evidence item across rows shows which data actually discriminates and which is inert.
Tuning parameters¶
- Row breadth — how many rivals, including nulls and mundane options. More rows resist premature convergence but cost effort and can dilute focus.
- Source-quality granularity — a single credibility mark versus provenance, independence, and access scored separately. Finer scoring catches correlated sources posing as independent confirmation.
- Counter-evidence weighting — how heavily contradiction counts against a row relative to support. Weighting contradiction up guards against confirmation-seeking; weighted too high it rewards unfalsifiable claims that simply attract no counter-evidence.
- Freeze point — how long the matrix stays open to new rows/columns before a pick is taken forward.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it defeats the single-story trap: by demanding rivals and counter-evidence in the same view, it prevents the first plausible narrative from monopolizing the belief slot, and it surfaces the diagnostic-versus-inert distinction that prose summaries hide.
Its failure mode is false rigor — a tidy grid feels objective while every cell is still a judgment call, and analysts can smuggle a foregone conclusion in by choosing which rows and columns exist. A classic misuse is stuffing the matrix with supporting evidence and leaving counter-columns thin, which quietly recreates the confirmation bias the tool exists to break. The guarding discipline is to populate counter-evidence first, keep at least one mundane rival on the board, and remember the matrix ranks warrant — it does not itself decide that the top row is now believed.

The matrix is a decision-time comparison of rivals; the register is a standing ledger of the winners.
