The simplest defense against a misused probability is to make it ungrammatical to state one without its context. Given-That Clause is a communication template — a required sentence shape — that binds three things into a single utterance: the event whose probability is claimed, the condition taken as given, and enough of a type word ("chance," "given," "if") to signal that the number is conditional. Its defining move is that it operates at the moment of speech or writing, on a human, in a single clause: "probability of X, given Y." It is not a stored field and not a calculation; it is the discipline of never letting a bare number leave your mouth.

Example

A television meteorologist is about to say "70% chance of rain tomorrow." The Given-That Clause forces the fuller shape before it airs: "There's a 70% chance that any given point in the metro area sees measurable rain at some time tomorrow — given the current front's projected track." The template made three hidden things explicit: the event (measurable rain, somewhere, sometime — not "it will rain all day"), the population (any point in the metro, not the whole day at your house), and the conditioning assumption (the front holds its track). Viewers who hear the naked "70%" routinely read it as "70% of tomorrow will be rainy"; the clause blocks that read at the source.

The payoff is not precision in the number — the 70% is unchanged — but precision in what the 70% means, delivered in the same sentence so no listener has to reconstruct it.

How it works

The template enforces a fill-in-the-blanks shape:

  • Name the event — the specific outcome being assigned probability, stated tightly enough that it can't be quietly widened or narrowed later.
  • State the given — the condition, evidence, subgroup, or assumption held fixed, introduced by an explicit "given / if / assuming."
  • Signal the type — a word marking the claim as conditional rather than a flat fact ("chance of… given…").

The rule is that all three appear in one clause; splitting the condition into a later caveat defeats the purpose, because the caveat is exactly what gets dropped in the retelling.

Tuning parameters

  • Formality of the frame — full "P(event | condition)" notation for a technical audience versus plain "chance of… if…" for the public. Formality buys precision but loses listeners.
  • Condition granularity — how much of the given-context to voice. Naming every assumption is faithful but unwieldy; naming only the load-bearing condition is memorable but can hide a fragile one.
  • Placement — condition stated before the number ("given the front holds, 70%") versus after. Leading with the condition primes correct interpretation; trailing it risks the number landing first and alone.
  • Enforcement — a soft habit versus a hard editorial rule that a number without a given-clause does not ship. Hard rules change culture but feel bureaucratic.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is reach and cheapness: it needs no tool, no table, no software, and it defends the most frequent failure — a probability quoted with no denominator at all. It is the mechanism that turns "the base rate was never mentioned" from a systemic problem into a grammatical one, guarding against base-rate neglect at the point of utterance.[n1]

Its failure mode is that a clause can be complete-sounding but hollow: a speaker names a condition that isn't the one the number actually depends on, and the fluent "given that…" lends false authority to a mis-specified frame. The classic misuse is ritual incantation — appending "given current conditions" to every forecast as filler, so the phrase stops carrying information. The guarding discipline is to make the stated given the one that would most change the number if it were false, and to run a quick informal self-check that the event named is the event the number was actually computed for.

How it implements the components

  • target_event_definition — the template's first slot forces the event to be named tightly before any number is attached.
  • conditioning_context_statement — the "given that…" slot is this component, delivered in the same clause as the number.
  • probability_type_label — the "chance of… given…" framing signals conditional-not-marginal in ordinary words.

It does NOT implement reuse_boundary or causal_nonclaim_warning — those persist a frame downstream and are carried by the conditional probability annotation; nor denominator_population as a computed object, which the reference population note documents. The clause states the frame out loud; it does not store it or compute it.
