Sense Distinction Matrix¶

Separates the different meanings, scopes, and reference classes hiding behind one repeated term, so a merely verbal contradiction stops masquerading as a real one.
Some paradoxes are made of language, not the world: a single word is used in two different senses, and the "contradiction" is just those senses colliding. A Sense Distinction Matrix is a fill-in template that hunts for exactly this. It takes the word or requirement that appears on both sides of the clash, lays out its candidate meanings, scopes, units, and reference classes as rows, and lines up each conflicting claim against the sense it actually relies on — so a claim asserting "X" and a claim denying "X" are revealed to be about two different X's. Its defining move is disambiguation with a decision test attached: a distinction only counts if pinning down which sense each claim uses changes what should be done. That test is what separates it from idle wordplay — the matrix exists to dissolve semantic pseudo-paradoxes, and to prove there is nothing left once the equivocation is named.
Example¶
A company's legal and HR teams are locked over a policy that seems to both permit and forbid the same thing. Their contractor-classification rule states that "employees" are entitled to certain benefits, while a separate compliance rule states that "employees" must be excluded from a particular liability pool. Applied to their gig-platform workers, the two rules appear to contradict — the same people seem to be both owed benefits and barred from the pool.
A Sense Distinction Matrix resolves it. It puts the loaded term — employee — at the center and lays out its senses as rows: the tax-law definition, the benefits-statute definition, and the internal-liability definition, each with a different reference class. It then aligns each rule's claim with the sense it invokes and finds that the benefits rule uses the statutory-employment sense while the liability rule uses the tax sense — two different reference classes that happen to share a word.[n1] The apparent contradiction is a fallacy of equivocation, not a real conflict. The reframed problem is no longer "how can the same worker be in and out at once?" but "which classification governs which obligation, and are our gig workers inside or outside each defined class?" — a question with a determinate, actionable answer.
How it works¶
- Isolate the shared term. Find the single word, unit, or requirement appearing on both sides of the apparent contradiction — the suspect carrying the equivocation.
- Enumerate its senses as rows. List the distinct meanings, scopes, units, or reference classes the term could carry, drawing them out explicitly rather than assuming everyone means the same thing.
- Align each claim to its sense. Map each conflicting claim onto the specific sense it actually relies on, exposing whether the two claims are even about the same thing.
- Apply the decision test. Keep only distinctions that change what should be done; a sense split that leaves every action identical is verbal noise, not a resolution.
- Restate on the disambiguated terms. Rewrite the problem with each sense named, so the false either/or is replaced by determinate, per-sense questions.
Tuning parameters¶
- Sense granularity — how finely the term's meanings are split into rows. Fine splits catch subtle equivocations but can manufacture distinctions where none matters; coarse splits stay legible but may leave two senses fused.
- Decision-test strictness — how firmly a distinction must change an action to be retained. Strict testing prevents semantic handwaving; loose testing lets cosmetic hairsplitting survive.
- Reference-class explicitness — how fully each sense's population or scope is spelled out. High explicitness prevents the term from sliding back into ambiguity; it also makes the matrix heavier to build.
- Coverage breadth — how many candidate senses are enumerated before aligning claims. Broad enumeration is thorough but slow; a narrow set is fast but risks missing the sense that actually resolves the clash.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is surgical: where a paradox is genuinely a matter of one word doing two jobs, the matrix dissolves it cleanly and shows there was never a real conflict — the fastest and most complete kind of resolution the archetype offers. It is the right first tool whenever the same term recurs suspiciously on both sides of a clash.
Its failure mode is the archetype's premature dissolution trap in its purest form: declaring "you just mean two different things" when the parties actually disagree about the world, using a semantic distinction to make a real conflict vanish. It can also multiply hair-splitting distinctions that do no decision work, dressing evasion as rigor. The decision test is the guard: a sense split is only allowed to stand if naming it changes what someone should do, and a distinction that leaves every action unchanged must be discarded rather than admired. Used with that discipline, the matrix clarifies; used without it, it launders a substantive disagreement into a vocabulary lesson.
