Evidence Linking¶
Grounding practice — instantiates Cooperative Communication Repair
Attaches the basis — source, data, confidence, or assumption — to each claim so a mistrusted or unsupported statement becomes something participants can actually evaluate.
Evidence Linking repairs the grounding expectation: it attaches, to each claim that carries weight, the basis a listener needs to evaluate it — the source, the underlying data, a confidence level, and the key assumption it rests on. Its one defining idea is that the repair is about what backs the statement, not what the statement means or why it matters. When an exchange stalls because a number, recommendation, or accusation is asserted without anything a skeptical participant can check, adding more assertion does nothing; the fix is to make the warrant travel with the claim. Where a relevance repair answers "why are you telling me this?", evidence linking answers the different question "how do you know that?" — and it does so by supplying the specific grounding material, not by reframing the claim's purpose.
Example¶
An investigative newsroom is preparing a story asserting that a state agency "ignored 200 complaints" about a contractor. On its own that sentence is a liability and, to a wary reader, just an accusation. The editor runs an evidence-linking pass: every load-bearing factual claim must carry an attached basis before it can stand. "200 complaints" gets linked to the complaint log obtained by public-records request, with the date range and the exact definition of "complaint" that produced the count. "Ignored" gets grounded in the absence of any recorded response action over a stated window — and, because "ignored" is an inference rather than a fact, it is tagged as such and softened to "took no recorded action on." A fourth claim can't be sourced beyond a single anonymous account; rather than assert it, the editor downgrades it to a clearly-attributed allegation.
The published paragraph now lets a reader — or an opposing lawyer — trace each claim to its warrant: here is the log, here is the window, here is what we counted and what we inferred. The distrust that would have sunk the story is repaired not by insisting harder but by making the basis inspectable.
How it works¶
- Attach a basis to each load-bearing claim. For every claim that matters, record its source, the data or method behind it, a confidence level, and the assumption it depends on.
- Separate fact from inference from opinion. Label which is which, so grounding is demanded where it's owed and not faked where it can't be had.
- Downgrade rather than overstate. Where the basis is thin, weaken the claim to match — an attributed allegation, a range, an explicit "estimate" — instead of asserting past the evidence.
- Keep the link with the claim. Ground inline, or one click away, so the basis is present at the point of doubt rather than buried in an appendix nobody opens.
The distinguishing discipline is proportional warrant: the strength of the attached basis is matched to the weight the claim is asked to bear.
Tuning parameters¶
- Evidence standard — how strong a basis counts as enough. A high bar builds trust in contested settings but can freeze ordinary claims that don't warrant it.
- Citation granularity — whole-source versus line-level linkage. Fine granularity lets a reader verify precisely but clutters; coarse is readable but harder to check.
- Confidence tagging — whether and how loudly each claim carries its uncertainty. Explicit tags are honest but can read as hedging if overdone.
- Placement — inline versus footnote versus appendix. Inline puts the basis where doubt arises; appendices keep prose clean but move the warrant out of sight.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Evidence linking is the right repair when coordination breaks specifically on trust — a status update nobody believes, a recommendation that reads as opinion, a figure that could be anything. Making the basis inspectable converts "take my word" into "check my work," which is what lets participants evaluate and move. In effect it supplies the warrant that turns a bare claim into an argument a reader can assess.[n1]
Its failure modes cluster around the appearance of grounding. Grounding theater attaches citations that don't actually support the claim, borrowing credibility without earning it; over-grounding buries a routine exchange under basis nobody needed, converting a trust repair into a sufficiency problem; and an evidence standard can be weaponized — demanding impossible proof from one side to stall them. The guarding discipline is to check that each attached source genuinely supports its claim (not merely that a link exists) and to ground in proportion to the weight and contestedness of the claim, leaving trivial statements alone.
How it implements the components¶
evidence_grounding— its core act: supplying the source, data, confidence, and assumptions that let a claim be evaluated.repair_content— the attached basis is the specific repair content that resolves the distrust; the claim itself is unchanged, its warrant is added.
It does not reconnect a claim to the reader's current question or decision (relevance_link — Relevance Reframing, its nearest twin) or verify that the grounded claim was understood (shared_understanding_check — Readback / Teach-Back). Both this and Relevance Reframing supply repair content, but this one supplies the basis behind a claim while Relevance Reframing supplies the reason it matters.
