Matrix Game¶
Adjudicated game — instantiates Adaptive Opponent Rehearsal
A lightweight game in which players propose an action plus reasons it should succeed, and an adjudicator rules on the outcome by weighing the arguments — strategic interaction approximated by argument, not simulation.
The Matrix Game replaces rules tables and combat models with structured argument. On their turn a player states an action and then gives reasons it should work; other players may offer counter-arguments; and an adjudicator — sometimes aided by a die weighted to the strength of the case — rules on what actually happens and narrates the consequence. Its defining move is that the engine of the game is reasoned plausibility judged aloud, not a simulation and not a scoreboard: the rehearsal's fidelity comes from the quality of the arguments and the honesty of the adjudication, which makes it astonishingly cheap to run on any topic where no validated model exists. It is the mechanism for contested situations you can reason about far better than you can model.
Example¶
A coalition of aid agencies is planning how to keep a humanitarian corridor open through territory contested by an armed faction. There is no simulation for this — too many human variables — but there is a great deal to reason about. They run a matrix game. On the aid coalition's turn, a player proposes: "We negotiate safe passage directly with the local commander, arguing that letting food through buys him legitimacy with the population." The player gives three reasons it should work. A player representing the faction counter-argues: "His incentives run the other way — controlling the food is his leverage; he gains more by rationing it."
The adjudicator weighs both cases. The commander's argument is judged stronger given what's known of the faction's past behavior, so the ruling is that negotiation stalls and the corridor stays contested — but the adjudicator narrates a new opening: a rival sub-commander might break ranks for the legitimacy. That ruling reshapes the coalition's next move toward the rival. In an hour, with nothing but index cards and a whiteboard, the game has surfaced the plan's core flawed assumption — that food is a gift the faction wants to allow — and branched into an option no one had planned. The whole value came from arguments being judged in the open, where the weak one could be seen to lose.
How it works¶
- Action plus argument. A player names a move and states the reasons it should succeed; a turn is incomplete without both.
- Open counter-argument. Other players, especially those holding opposing actors, may argue against, so each move meets its best objection before it resolves.
- Adjudicate on the merits. An adjudicator (or a small panel) rules on the outcome by weighing argument strength against known facts, optionally with a probability-weighted die, and narrates the consequence.
- Branch from the ruling. The narrated outcome opens or forecloses options for the next turn, so the game grows a tree of reasoned consequences rather than following a script.
Tuning parameters¶
- Adjudication style — a single umpire, a panel, or a die weighted by argument strength. An umpire is fast but personality-dependent; a panel is fairer but slower; a die adds visible chance at the cost of debate over the odds.
- Argument evidence bar — how much a claim must be grounded to count. A high bar rewards knowledge and curbs bluster; a low bar keeps play fluid but lets rhetoric win.
- Actor coverage — how many opposing actors get their own player. More players sharpen counter-argument but slow the round and risk sprawl.
- Randomness weight — how much the die overrides the stronger argument. More chance models luck and fog; less keeps the game a test of reasoning.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is reach and speed: because it needs no validated model, it can rehearse political, social, and diplomatic situations that resist simulation, and it does so in an afternoon with paper. The open action-and-argument format, invented as a way to game exactly these hard-to-model situations[n1], forces each move to survive its best counter-argument in public — which is where silent assumptions die.
Its failure mode is adjudication capture and rhetoric: the game is only as good as its adjudicator, and a weak, biased, or dominated umpire lets the most confident talker win instead of the strongest case, converting the exercise into a debate-club victory with no bearing on reality. The classic misuse is stacking the adjudicator or letting the plan's champion also judge its plausibility. The guarding discipline is to separate the adjudicator from the plan owner, require arguments to cite what's actually known, and make the reasoning behind each ruling explicit so a bad call can be challenged rather than absorbed.

The matrix game runs no safe_stakes_boundary sandbox — where Cyber Range or Simulated Adversary Exercise, its nearest twin, settles outcomes by instrumented telemetry, this settles them by argued plausibility instead; and it does not own the intelligence_or_signal_injection_feed, which is Inject Deck.
