Memory Palace Layout is the container — the imagined (or drawn-then-internalized) spatial structure that supplies the addressable positions everything else uses. It is not a process but an artifact: a building, a house, or a campus held in the mind, carved into a fixed set of discrete loci, each a slot sized to hold one item without blurring into its neighbor. Its whole contribution is furniture — a stable, over-familiar architecture with clearly separated places and a sensible cap on how much each place carries. It does not decide the traversal order, does not craft the images, and does not debug anything on paper. It simply is the address space that the placement and recall steps depend on.

Example

An actor wants to hold a forty-line poem cold, with no script in hand. Instead of inventing a route, he uses a container he can already "see" perfectly: the layout of his childhood home. He carves it into loci — front gate, porch swing, umbrella stand, hall mirror, banister, first stair, landing window — twenty places, each visually distinct, none bleeding into the next. He sets a density cap of at most two lines per place, because a locus crammed with four lines becomes an unreadable smear when he tries to recall it. The layout itself does no ordering and makes no images; it guarantees twenty clean, familiar, well-separated slots. Only then — as a separate step — does he assign couplets and vivid images into each place, confident they have somewhere stable to live and that no two loci will collide.

How it works

  • Choose an over-familiar structure — a place you can walk blind, so navigating the container is never itself the hard part.
  • Partition it into discrete, visually distinct loci — corners, furniture, fixtures — with clean boundaries so adjacent places don't merge.
  • Fix the loci count to the content that must live there (or slightly more, for headroom).
  • Set a per-locus density cap so no single place is overloaded.

What distinguishes it from its siblings: it produces slots — a standing set of addressable places — not sequences and not images.

Tuning parameters

  • Loci count — how many places to carve; more slots fit more items but risk crowding a modest home.
  • Loci distinctness — how visually separated adjacent places are; sharper separation prevents merge-errors but limits how many you can pack in.
  • Density cap — items allowed per locus; a strict one-per-place is unambiguous but demands a larger palace.
  • Realism vs. imagination — a real remembered building is vivid and stable but finite; an invented palace can be arbitrarily large but must first be over-learned before it holds anything reliably.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that a good container is what makes everything downstream possible: stable, distinct, appropriately sized slots into which content can be placed without collision. This is exactly why the classical ars memoriae stored a speech's parts in the rooms of grand, well-known buildings — the architecture supplied durable, ordered addresses.[1] Its failure mode is decorative palace drift: a layout imagined so elaborately that construction becomes an end in itself, admired but never recall-tested, or so densely furnished that loci blur together. The classic misuse is building an ornate palace and mistaking the pleasure of designing it for actual retrieval capability. The guarding discipline is to keep the layout plain and over-familiar, hold the density cap, and remember that the container is only proven once content placed inside it survives a recall test — which another mechanism runs.

How it implements the components

  • familiar_spatial_route — supplies the over-learned spatial structure that furnishes the addresses.
  • locus_assignment — carves that structure into a fixed set of discrete, addressable loci — the standing positions content is later assigned into.
  • cue_density_limit — caps how many items a single place may hold, keeping loci from blurring together.

Memory Palace Layout does not lay out the traversal order or debug the assignment on paper (retrieval_path, route_stability_check, ordered_recall_test) — that visible design-and-QA work is Sketch Map Index's; the Layout is the internal container that holds the loci, not the drawing used to build and check the index.
