Reads each likely excerpt entirely on its own and asks whether it stays accurate, attributable, and bounded once nothing around it remains.
The simplest way to find out whether a fragment can survive detachment is to detach it and look. Quote Survivability Test does exactly that: it takes each likely excerpt, sets it entirely alone — no preceding sentence, no surrounding paragraph, no page — and asks three plain questions. Read by a stranger with nothing else, is it still accurate? Is it still attributable? Is it still bounded, or has the missing context let it claim more than it should? Its defining idea is that it is a solo, static accuracy read of a chosen excerpt — a quiet audit, one fragment at a time, against a fixed standard. It doesn't role-play hostile actors or generate the worst possible remix; it simply isolates a quote and judges whether meaning holds when everything around it is gone. Where the quote fails, the test hands a flag downstream: this line needs its caveat fused in, or it should not be left detachable at all.
Example¶
A columnist has drafted an op-ed arguing for a specific housing reform. Before filing, she runs a quote survivability test on the sentences most likely to be tweeted. She lifts one out and reads it cold: "We should let developers build without so many rules." Alone, it's a disaster — it reads as "abolish all regulation," which is the opposite of her nuanced point about one zoning provision. Accurate? No. Bounded? Not remotely. She flags it. She lifts the next: "Single-stair reform could add homes in exactly the neighborhoods that block them." Read alone, it holds — accurate, self-bounded, and it even carries the specific mechanism. That one passes. Going line by line, she isn't imagining an enemy; she's just asking whether each sentence can stand by itself in front of a reader who will never see the rest. The failed line gets rewritten to carry its own scope; the passing one is promoted as the quote she'd rather have travel.
How it works¶
- Isolate at the true grain of circulation. Pull each candidate excerpt out at the size it will actually travel — a sentence, a heading, a chart caption — and present it with nothing around it.
- Read as a stranger, once. Judge the fragment on first, cold reading, without the author's memory of what the surrounding text said. The whole point is to simulate the reader who has only the fragment.
- Score on three axes. Accurate (is the claim still true as stated?), attributable (can its source be recovered?), bounded (does it claim only what it should, or has lost context inflated it?).
- Flag, don't fix. The test's output is a verdict per fragment — survives, or fails on which axis — handed to the authoring and anchoring mechanisms that will actually repair it.
Tuning parameters¶
- Excerpt set — testing every candidate fragment versus only the highest-risk few. Full coverage is thorough but slow; a triaged set is fast but can miss a sleeper line.
- Isolation strictness — quote-only versus quote-plus-immediate-neighbor. Strict isolation models the harshest reuse; a little context is more realistic but more forgiving.
- Pass bar — how much drift counts as failure. A strict bar catches subtle inflation but flags many lines; a loose one is efficient but lets ambiguity through.
- Reviewer freshness — tested by the author versus a colleague who hasn't read the piece. A fresh reader better simulates the stranger; the author is faster but primed to fill gaps.
- Axis weighting — whether accuracy, attributability, or boundedness is decisive. Different artifacts (legal, scientific, promotional) weight these differently.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is cheapness and directness: no tooling, no adversary, just the discipline of reading a fragment as it will actually be encountered — alone. It resembles the classic newspaper front-page test in ethics[1], which asks how a decision would read if it appeared, stripped of private justification, on tomorrow's front page. Applied to quotes, that same isolating question reliably surfaces the line that was only ever clear inside its paragraph.
Its failure mode is that it checks accidental survivability, not adversarial survivability: a fragment can pass a fair solo reading and still be weaponizable by a bad-faith clipper who cuts inside it or recaptions it. The classic misuse is treating a passing grade as clip-proof and skipping the hostile simulation that would catch deliberate distortion. The guarding discipline is to pair the test with an adversarial pass for high-stakes fragments, and to remember that "survives an honest stranger" is a floor, not a guarantee against a motivated one.
How it implements the components¶
extractable_fragment_map— enumerating and isolating each likely excerpt is, in practice, mapping the fragments that will travel independently, one tested unit at a time.integrity_guardrail— by finding exactly which claims lose their meaning when detached, the test identifies the caveats that cannot be separated from their fragment — the guardrails that then need placing.
It does not implement adversarial_remix_red_team or downstream_circulation_model — role-playing hostile reusers and generating the worst plausible remixes is Downstream Remix Red Team's adversarial simulation; this test is a fair-minded solo read of one excerpt, not an attack. Nor does it implement pull_quote_ladder: authoring the fixed, pre-fused quotable lines is Pull-Quote and Caveat Pairing's construction, whereas this test only judges the lines it is handed.
