Sequence and Placement Map¶
Structural placement map — instantiates Textual Close-Reading Mode
Charts the order, adjacency, nesting, and framing of a text's parts so that meaning carried by where something sits — not just what it says — becomes visible and arguable.
The Sequence and Placement Map makes a text's structure explicit: the order of its parts, what sits next to what, what nests inside what, what frames what, and where a progression or a reversal occurs. Its defining purpose is to expose the meaning carried by position — to explain why the same sentence would mean something different if it appeared elsewhere. It is the antidote to the quotation list, which preserves the words but discards the arrangement that gives them force. The map records where things sit and how they relate; it deliberately stops short of concluding, so that the placement evidence can be inspected before any reading is hung on it.
Example¶
A privacy team maps a mobile signup screen — a text-like artifact whose marks and layout are stable enough to cite. The map records that the disclosure "By continuing you agree to data sharing" sits below the prominent "Continue" button and after an unrelated block of marketing copy, while the button itself is foregrounded near the top of the screen. Laid out this way, the map shows the disclosure is positioned where a user will act before encountering it — the identical words placed above the button would function very differently. The analysis can now claim that the consent is structurally undermined by placement and point to the map to show it, rather than merely quoting the sentence as though its position were incidental. Consent-flow placement of this kind is a real, documented interface concern; the specific screen is illustrative.
How it works¶
The distinguishing work is relational, not linear. The map takes a bounded artifact and records, for each material element, its position in the sequence, its adjacencies, what frames or nests it, and where the text turns — a progression, a reversal, a foregrounding. Every placement observation is anchored to a stable locator so the position claimed can be verified. The output is a relational map rather than a transcript, and its purpose is to support counterfactual reasoning: if this element were moved, what would change? Structure is treated as the object of analysis in its own right.
Tuning parameters¶
- Structural resolution — whether you map sections, sentences, or individual marks. Finer resolution catches local placement effects but explodes the map's size.
- Relation types tracked — order, adjacency, nesting, framing, foregrounding. Tracking all of them is complete but heavy; pick the ones the interpretive question turns on.
- Counterfactual aggressiveness — how far you test "if it were placed elsewhere" alternatives. More surfaces placement's contribution but risks drifting into speculation.
- Foregrounding weight — how much extra significance a prominent position (an opening, a headline, the top of a screen) is allowed to confer.
- Boundary setting — where the mapped unit starts and stops. Too small and it loses the framing context; too large and it loses resolution.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is recovering meaning that is entirely structural and invisible to word-level reading: emphasis conferred by placement, an exception buried mid-list, a disclosure positioned to be missed. It is essential wherever arrangement is doing the work.[1]
Its failure mode is that placement effects are easy to assert and hard to prove — not every adjacency is meaningful, and much ordering is merely conventional or incidental. Run backwards, the map is used to declare a placement "significant" because it supports a reading already held, ignoring that the arrangement may be standard practice. The discipline is to test whether a placement is conventional — via Parallel-Passage Comparison — before reading intent into it, and to state the counterfactual the claim implies rather than leaving it as innuendo.
How it implements the components¶
position_order_and_relation_map— it is this map: the record of what qualifies what, what frames what, how exceptions nest, and what placement foregrounds.exact_mark_evidence_trace— each placement observation is anchored to a stable locator with enough context to verify the position being claimed.
It maps structure but does not interpret recurrence (Motif Concordance and Recurrence Map) or principled absence (Omission and Negative-Evidence Audit), and it does not integrate placements into a warranted claim — that is Micro-to-Macro Claim Matrix, which consumes this map.
