Slide/Narration Alignment Review¶
Review procedure — instantiates Lead-Support Channel Orchestration
Reviews a paired lead and support channel — speech and slides — to catch where the support upstages, contradicts, or lags the lead.
A Slide/Narration Alignment Review is a focused, after-the-fact review of one specific lead-support pairing — spoken narration as the lead, projected slides as the support — checking three ways the support can go wrong against that particular lead: it can upstage the voice (wrong register, too much on the slide), it can contradict it (the slide says something the speaker does not), or it can lag or race it (the slide changes off the speaker's beat). Unlike a whole-bundle audit, it works on a single pair and reads it line-by-line, slide-against-sentence, to confirm the slide is genuinely supporting the talk rather than competing with it.
Example¶
A researcher rehearses a conference talk and hands the deck-and-script to a colleague for an alignment review. The reviewer goes slide by slide against the spoken text. Slide 4 is a dense paragraph the speaker will also say aloud nearly word-for-word — flagged: the audience will read ahead and stop listening, so the slide is cut to a three-word cue and the full point stays in the voice. Slide 7 is a chart whose caption asserts a stronger claim than the speaker makes — flagged as a contradiction and softened to match. Slide 9's animation is scripted to reveal all bullets at once while the speaker walks through them one by one — flagged as a timing mismatch and re-sequenced so each bullet appears on its sentence.
The review changes nothing about what the talk argues; it changes the relationship between the two channels. Afterward the slides feel like they are following the speaker — terser than the voice, never ahead of it, never saying anything the speaker does not — which is exactly what support is supposed to feel like.
How it works¶
- Read the pair together, not apart. Each slide is judged against the sentence it accompanies, never on its own merits.
- Check register distance. Confirm the slide is pitched below the narration in density and authority — a cue, not a competing document — so it cannot claim the lead by looking more complete than the voice.
- Check the beat. Confirm each slide change lands on the speaker's transition, not before (spoiling) or after (contradicting).
- Check the support contract. Confirm the slide reinforces or illustrates what the speaker says and introduces no claim the narration does not license.
Tuning parameters¶
- Review grain — every slide-sentence pair versus spot-checking the risky ones. Full grain catches everything but is slow; spot checks are fast but miss quiet mismatches.
- Register gap target — how far below the narration the slides are pushed. A large gap keeps the voice clearly the lead but can leave slides too sparse to help.
- Timing tolerance — how tight the slide-to-beat sync must be. Tight sync feels responsive but is fragile to a speaker who varies pace.
- Reviewer independence — the author self-reviewing versus a fresh colleague. An outside reviewer catches the redundancy the author cannot un-see.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it targets the single most common multichannel failure in presentations — slides that duplicate or outshine the talk — and fixes it at the pair level, where it is cheap to catch. It operationalizes the multimedia-learning redundancy principle: identical words delivered as both on-screen text and speech can impair comprehension compared with narration alone.[1]
Its failure mode is scope blindness: because it examines only the speech-slide pair, it is silent about every other channel — the handout, the demo, the room, the Q&A — and a talk can pass the review yet still overwhelm on a channel the review never looked at. The classic misuse is stripping slides so aggressively in the name of "not competing" that they stop supporting at all, leaving the audience with nothing to anchor to. The guarding discipline is to treat the review as a pair-level check that presumes the wider roster is handled elsewhere, and to push slides toward supporting sparseness, not emptiness.
