Content Hierarchy Specification¶
Specification — instantiates Lead-Support Channel Orchestration
Ranks the message into primary, supporting, and peripheral tiers and fixes the prominence and depth each tier gets, so importance is legible before a word is read.
A Content Hierarchy Specification ranks the content itself — not the channels carrying it — into tiers of importance, and then fixes the treatment each tier receives: how prominent it is made and how deep its register runs. Where a channel matrix decides which pipe is the figure, this spec decides which idea is the figure, then encodes that ranking so a receiver can read priority off the surface before parsing a single sentence. It is the artifact that turns "this is the point; that is elaboration; that is a footnote" into concrete, repeatable treatment rules for prominence and depth.
Example¶
An editor lays out the front page of a daily newspaper. The raw material is one story: a city council vote to rezone a waterfront district. Before any design happens, the Content Hierarchy Specification ranks the content. Tier one is the outcome — council approves rezoning, 6–3. Tier two is the immediate consequence — what gets built, who is affected. Tier three is background — the two-year history of the debate. Tier four is peripheral — a related infographic and a pull-quote.
Now the treatment is fixed by tier, not by taste. Tier one gets the largest type, top of the fold, terse and declarative register. Tier two runs as the standfirst and lead paragraphs, full sentences, plain register. Tier three is compressed into a boxed sidebar with a denser, more clause-heavy register. Tier four is caption-sized and skimmable. A reader who spends four seconds on the page still walks away with the vote; a reader who spends four minutes gets the history — because the specification made importance legible as prominence and depth, not as reading order alone.
How it works¶
- Rank the content into tiers, most-consequential first, independent of which channel will carry each.
- Assign a salience treatment per tier — size, weight, placement, color, density — so the visual or auditory weight encodes the rank rather than merely decorating it.
- Assign a register per tier — vocabulary, formality, and especially detail depth: the lead tier is terse; supporting tiers carry the elaboration.
- Publish the mapping as a reusable rule, so every instance of a tier-one item looks and reads like tier one without a fresh judgment call.
Tuning parameters¶
- Number of tiers — two (lead/support) up to five or more. More tiers express finer priority but blur the boundaries a receiver can actually perceive.
- Salience contrast between tiers — subtle gradient versus strong step. Strong contrast makes rank unmistakable but flattens the lower tiers into near-invisibility.
- Register spread — how far detail depth swings from the terse top tier to the dense bottom. A wide spread aids skimming but can make lower tiers feel like a different document.
- Encoding stability — whether tier-to-treatment mapping is locked house-wide or re-decided per piece. Locking buys consistency and speed; re-deciding buys fit.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it lets importance survive a glance: a receiver perceives the ranking pre-attentively, and the same content can be authored once yet skimmed or studied by different readers. It is the discipline behind journalism's inverted pyramid, which orders material so the lead survives even if the tail is cut.[1]
Its failure mode is that a hierarchy can be internally tidy and still wrong about what matters — the spec faithfully amplifies whatever it was told is tier one, so a mis-ranked message is now confidently mis-emphasized. The classic misuse is designing the prominence steps for elegance and letting the actual importance follow the layout, inverting the intended order. The guarding discipline is to fix the ranking from the content's consequence first and derive the treatment from it — never the reverse — and to sanity-check that the item drawing the most weight is genuinely the one that matters most.
How it implements the components¶
salience_weighting_map— the per-tier prominence rules (size, weight, placement, density) that make rank visible as static visual or auditory weight.register_and_code_calibration— the per-tier register and detail-depth rules, so the lead tier stays terse and supporting tiers carry the elaboration.
It ranks content tiers, not channels: channel_bundle_inventory and lead_channel_assignment belong to Primary/Secondary Channel Matrix, its nearest twin, which ranks pipes where this ranks messages; and the moment-to-moment scheduling timing_and_phase_alignment_grid belongs to Cue Sheet or Timing Grid.
