Steelman then Refute Protocol¶
Dialectical protocol — instantiates Informal Fallacy Diagnosis and Repair
Rebuilds an argument in its strongest fair form before attacking it, so any refutation lands on the position itself and not a caricature.
Refuting the weakest reading of a position proves nothing about the position. Steelman then Refute Protocol enforces a sequence: first reconstruct the argument in the strongest, most defensible form its author could fairly endorse — repairing sloppy phrasing, supplying the missing premise it needs, resolving ambiguities in its favor — and only then mount the attack against that improved version. Its defining discipline is the ordering and the charity: the reconstruction is done before any critique, and it is done generously, so that a refutation which survives lands on the real position rather than on a strawman. It produces the fair reconstruction as its artifact; the refutation it then runs typically draws on other checks for the actual falsifying work. The protocol's value is that a defect found in a steelmanned argument is a defect that genuinely matters.
Example¶
A philosophy seminar is debating an argument for strict ethical veganism, stated by one student rather loosely: "Animals feel pain, so eating them is wrong." Rather than pounce on the gap, the Steelman then Refute Protocol first rebuilds it charitably. It inventories the units — the conclusion (eating animals is wrong), the stated premise (animals feel pain), and the implicit premises the argument needs (causing unnecessary suffering is wrong; eating animals typically causes such suffering; the suffering is not outweighed). It records this reconstructed version as the strongest fair form: a suffering-based argument with its bridge premises made explicit, not the enthymeme the student blurted out.
Only now does the refutation begin — and it must engage that version. The class can grant every premise and probe the "unnecessary" qualifier, or test the outweighing premise against cases, but it can no longer win cheaply by pointing out that "animals feel pain" alone doesn't entail the conclusion, because the protocol already supplied the missing links. Whatever refutation survives against the steelman is one the vegan student would recognize as a real objection to their actual view. The protocol's output is that fair reconstruction plus the staged critique; the specific falsifying cases are drawn from a dedicated probe.
How it works¶
- Inventory before improving. Separate the conclusion, the explicit premises, and — critically — the implicit premises the argument silently relies on, so the reconstruction has all the parts to work with.
- Reconstruct charitably. Resolve ambiguities in the author's favor, supply the strongest plausible version of each weak premise, and add the bridge premises the inference needs, producing the best argument the author could fairly own.
- Record the strong form. Write down the steelmanned argument explicitly, so both sides agree on what is being attacked before the attack starts.
- Refute the strong form only. Mount the critique against the reconstructed version — never the original's loose phrasing — and report whether the strengthened argument still fails.
Tuning parameters¶
- Charity ceiling — how far you improve the argument before critiquing. Generous charity guarantees a fair fight but can build an argument the author never intended; low charity is faster but risks refuting a strawman.
- Implicit-premise supply — how many unstated assumptions you add to make the inference work. Adding more reveals the argument's true commitments but can overload it with premises its author would reject.
- Reconstruction fidelity — how tightly the steelman must stay tethered to what was actually claimed. High fidelity keeps you honest to the author; low fidelity drifts toward arguing with a position of your own making.
- Stop-at-reconstruction option — whether to pause after the steelman (sometimes the charitable version is simply persuasive) or always proceed to refutation. Pausing avoids manufactured attacks; always proceeding keeps the critique disciplined.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it is the direct antidote to strawmanning, embodying the principle of charity — the interpretive commitment to read an argument in its most reasonable, coherent form before evaluating it.[n1] By refuting only the strengthened version, it makes any surviving critique credible to the argument's own proponent and prevents the hollow victories that come from attacking a caricature.
Its failure mode is the steelman that drifts: improving an argument so much, or supplying premises so freely, that the reconstruction is no longer the author's position but a stronger one the critic invented — a subtle strawman in reverse, where you refute a view nobody actually holds. There is also a cost failure: exhaustively steelmanning every weak argument is a way to avoid ever reaching a conclusion. The classic misuse is fake charity — announcing a steelman while quietly reconstructing a version that is easier to knock down. The guarding discipline is fidelity: the reconstruction must be one the original arguer would recognize and endorse as their view, ideally checked with them, and the added premises must be ones they would actually accept rather than ones that conveniently set up the refutation.
How it implements the components¶
charitable_reconstruction_record— its central artifact: the written, strongest-fair-form version of the argument, produced before any critique.argument_unit_inventory— it separates conclusion, explicit premises, and implicit premises so the reconstruction can strengthen each part deliberately.
It does not manufacture the falsifying cases the refutation uses — counterexample_register belongs to Counterexample Probe; this protocol builds and stages the strongest fair reconstruction, then draws on that probe to supply the specific cases that do the refuting.
