Informal Fallacy Diagnosis and Repair

Naming a fallacy is worthless — even harmful — unless the name is tethered to the specific step where the reasoning actually fails. Fallacy Label Justification Note is the written artifact that supplies that tether: for a candidate label, it records which inference move earns it, why the label fits that move and not merely the tone, and how the point should be delivered to the audience as a correction rather than an insult. Its defining job is warranting and communication, not detection: it assumes some prior check has surfaced a suspected defect, and its work is to make the label defensible and usable. A label without this note is rhetoric; the note is what turns "that's a straw man!" into a claim someone can check.

Example

An editor is reviewing an op-ed that attacks a city official's proposal to renovate the central public library. The op-ed says: "The council member wants to spend without limit on a marble palace, so we should reject this reckless blank-check scheme." A staff writer wants to flag it as a straw man. The Fallacy Label Justification Note is what makes that flag publishable. It sets the candidate label — straw man — then pins it to the move: it quotes what the council member actually proposed (a capped, phased renovation budget) beside what the op-ed attacked (unlimited spending on a palace), showing the target was replaced with a weaker fabricated version. Then it reads the audience and stakes: this is a public column, the accusation will be seen by the official, so the note frames the finding as "the column argues against a proposal the council member did not make" rather than "the writer is a liar."

The result is a short, checkable record: label, the two side-by-side statements that justify it, and audience-appropriate wording. The editor can now ask for a correction on solid ground, and the writer can revise to engage the real proposal — the note does the warranting and the framing, and hands the actual repair decision elsewhere.

How it works

  • Attach the label to a move, not a mood. Name the candidate fallacy and identify the precise inference step it describes, refusing to let the label rest on the argument's tone, the speaker's identity, or its rhetorical heat.
  • Show the fit. Lay out the minimal evidence that the named pattern is present — the distorted-versus-actual claim, the irrelevant appeal, the equivocal term — so a reader can verify the label rather than take it on trust.
  • Frame for the audience. Calibrate the wording to the forum and stakes so the note reads as a diagnosis of the reasoning and invites repair, instead of stigmatizing the person and hardening the dispute.
  • Stay a note, not a verdict. Record the warranted label and leave the choice of remedy — and any sorting against other defects — to downstream steps.

Tuning parameters

  • Label specificity — how narrow a fallacy family you commit to. A precise name (straw man, not "bad faith") is more checkable but riskier if the fit is imperfect; a broad name is safer but less useful.
  • Evidence burden — how much showing the note must carry before the label is allowed to stand. Heavier burden resists misfired accusations; lighter burden is faster but invites the label-as-weapon habit.
  • Framing register — how sharply the finding is phrased, from clinical to pointed. A softer register preserves the relationship and the chance of repair; a sharper one lands harder but can provoke defensiveness.
  • Audience assumption — how much shared vocabulary you assume, which sets whether the label needs unpacking or can stand on its name.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it disarms the most corrosive habit in argument review: throwing a fallacy name as a debate-ending weapon. By demanding that a label be pinned to a move and shown, it makes accusations falsifiable and keeps the focus on the reasoning. The straw man is the paradigm case — a charge that is persuasive precisely when the distortion is documented and empty when it is merely asserted.[n1]

Its failure mode is the fallacy fallacy: treating a well-justified label as though it also refutes the conclusion. Showing that an argument commits a straw man shows only that this argument fails, not that its conclusion is false — the note documents a defective move, it does not settle the underlying question. The classic misuse is deploying the note to "win" by accumulating labels while never engaging the strongest form of the opposing case. The guarding discipline is to keep the note modest about its scope: it warrants that a specific inference is defective and nothing more, and it should be paired with a genuine engagement of the real argument rather than substituted for one.

How it implements the components

  • fallacy_candidate_label — it produces the warranted label itself: the named fallacy, bound to the specific inference move that earns it.
  • audience_and_stakes_context — it reads the forum and stakes to frame the finding as a correction, so the label communicates a reasoning fix rather than a personal attack.

It does not sort many defects by pattern or choose the remedy — recurring_fallacy_pattern_log and repair_or_rejection_route belong to Fallacy Triage Matrix; this note warrants and frames a single label for one argument, where the matrix classifies and routes a whole batch.

Editorial Notes

Form Classification

Form family: Representation, Specification & Plan

Rationale: Fallacy Label Justification Note operates as a non-executable information artifact that externalizes static or prospective structure because it ties a named fallacy to the exact defective inference move and states it as a reasoning correction rather than a stigmatizing label.

Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Fallacy Label Justification Note as 'Ties a named fallacy to the exact defective inference move and states it as a reasoning correction rather than a stigmatizing label', so its operative form is Representation, Specification & Plan.

Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; high confidence.

Origin Attribution

Primary origin: Rhetoric

Origin pattern: Cross-disciplinary synthesis

Present-day reach: Universal

Rationale: Identifying and explaining defective argumentative moves belongs to the rhetorical and argumentation-theory tradition.

Related originating lineages:

  • Philosophy — Informal logic materially supplies validity criteria and non-stigmatizing inference diagnosis. Logic materially supplies tests for whether the specific inference move is defective.

Review resolution: Both reviewers agree that rhetoric is primary. I retain philosophy only as formative origin lineages; cross_disciplinary_synthesis is appropriate because the final form materially combines the agreed primary with the retained formative lineages. Reach is universal because the structure is portable across essentially any domain with the stated problem, an applicability judgment kept separate from provenance. Encyclopedia synthesis is true because the exact generalized artifact is an encyclopedia-authored combination or refinement. No unresolved historical ambiguity remains after reconciling the secondary fields.

Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.

Review outcome: Reconciled after independent review; high confidence.

Notes

[n1] The straw man fallacy replaces an opponent's actual position with a weaker, distorted version and refutes that instead. The justification note earns the label by placing the real claim beside the attacked one; without that showing, the accusation is itself just rhetoric.
