When an argument has many things wrong with it, treating every flaw as equally urgent is its own kind of confusion. Fallacy Triage Matrix is the sorting instrument for that case: it takes a batch of suspected defects and places each into a grid whose axes are fallacy family (what kind of reasoning error it is) and inferential damage (how much this defect actually undermines the conclusion, from cosmetic to load-bearing). The cell a defect lands in determines its route — repair, narrow, rebut, or ignore. Its defining move is prioritization across a set: it is not built to warrant a single label carefully but to impose order on a pile, so effort flows to the flaws that decide the argument rather than to the most quotable ones. It also logs which families recur, so patterns become visible over many arguments.

Example

A reviewer is assessing a submitted paper whose Discussion section is a thicket of reasoning problems. Fallacy Triage Matrix is how the reviewer keeps the critique proportionate. Each suspected defect gets a row: an overreaching universal ("this always holds"), a shift between two senses of "significant," an appeal to the prestige of a cited author, a false binary between the paper's model and "doing nothing," and a hasty causal leap. The matrix classifies each by family — overgeneralization, ambiguity, irrelevant appeal, false dilemma, causal — and rates its damage: the causal leap and the false binary are load-bearing (the main conclusion rests on them), the equivocation is moderate, and the appeal-to-prestige is cosmetic (the paper doesn't actually need it).

The grid turns a scattershot list into a plan. The two load-bearing cells route to rebut — they must be answered before the paper's claim can stand. The equivocation routes to repair — ask the authors to fix one sense of the term. The prestige appeal routes to note-only — mention it, but don't let it dominate the review. The reviewer now spends the critique's weight where the argument actually breaks, and the recurring-family log flags that "false binary" keeps showing up across this author's submissions.

How it works

  • Intake the candidate defects as a set. Gather every suspected flaw in one place so they can be compared against each other rather than judged one at a time.
  • Classify by family. Assign each defect to a fallacy family — relevance, ambiguity, presumption, causal — so like errors are handled with like remedies.
  • Rate inferential damage. Score how much each defect actually undermines the conclusion, independent of how rhetorically striking it is, separating load-bearing flaws from cosmetic ones.
  • Route by cell and log the pattern. Send each defect to repair, narrow, rebut, or note-only according to its family-and-damage cell, and record recurring families so future arguments can be watched for them.

Tuning parameters

  • Family taxonomy — how fine-grained the classification is. A rich taxonomy routes precisely but is slower and demands expertise; a coarse one is quick but lumps unlike errors together.
  • Damage scale calibration — where the line sits between load-bearing and cosmetic. Set it high and you ignore flaws that quietly matter; set it low and you drown the review in trivia.
  • Route policy — the mapping from cell to action (which cells get rebutted versus merely noted). A strict policy forces engagement with every serious flaw; a lenient one conserves effort for the decisive ones.
  • Logging horizon — how far back the recurring-pattern log reaches. A long horizon surfaces habitual errors across many arguments but risks pre-judging a new one by an author's past.

The classic misuse is triage-as-avoidance: rating an inconvenient but genuinely load-bearing flaw as "cosmetic" so it can be routed to note-only and ignored. The guarding discipline is to treat the damage score as a claim that must itself be defensible — and to keep the matrix a routing aid, never a substitute for actually warranting each label it assigns.
