Once you have gathered the senses a term carries, you still have to make them comparable — and prose buries the differences that matter. The Sense-Boundary Comparison Table is the artifact that puts each sense in its own column — source, receiving, legacy, specialist, public, operational — and each defining attribute in its own row, so the boundary between one sense and the next stops being a matter of intuition and becomes something you can point at. Its defining move is juxtaposition: by forcing the senses into a shared grid, it makes the cells where two senses agree, diverge, or dangerously collide visible in a single glance, and it doubles as a working glossary of which sense is which. Example¶
A hospital's psychology service builds a comparison table for the word "trauma" because the same word is doing incompatible work across the building. The columns: the clinical-specialist sense (a diagnosable response to a specific overwhelming event, tied to DSM criteria), the everyday public sense ("that meeting was traumatic"), the emerging widened sense used in wellness content ("trauma" as any lingering discomfort), the legacy sense in old chart notes (physical injury, as in "blunt trauma"), and the operational sense that triggers a referral pathway and insurance coding.
Laid out row by row — trigger event, duration, who can assert it, what it obligates — the collisions jump out. The public and wellness senses have bleached the term so far that a patient saying "I'm traumatized" no longer reliably signals the clinical sense that the operational column requires to open a referral. The table flags this cell in red: the bleaching is not just imprecise, it is a harm risk, because an over-broad public sense can either trivialize a real clinical case or over-pathologize ordinary distress. The artifact doesn't fix the drift; it makes the exact boundary the clinic must protect impossible to miss.
How it works¶
- One column per sense, one row per attribute. Fix the sense columns to the contexts that matter (source, receiving, legacy, specialist, public, operational) and the attribute rows to the features that distinguish senses — trigger conditions, scope, who may assert it, what it obligates.
- Fill from evidence, not intuition. Populate each cell from real usage, so the table is an evidentiary artifact rather than a stipulation of what senses "should" be.
- Mark the collisions. Flag cells where two senses diverge on an attribute that carries consequences, and escalate the flag where a mismatch could cause stigma, over-reach, or operational error.
- Publish it as a glossary. Circulate the table itself as the reference for which sense is meant where — a scope note in matrix form.
Tuning parameters¶
- Column set — which senses earn a column. Add the legacy and operational columns when history and downstream decisions matter; drop them for a quick specialist-vs-public read. Too many columns overwhelm; too few hide the sense that bites.
- Row set (attributes) — which features you compare senses on. Rows chosen for consequence (what a sense obligates) surface harm; rows chosen for style surface mere register differences.
- Collision-flag threshold — how large a cell mismatch must be before it is marked. A low threshold catches subtle divergences but clutters; a high one keeps the table clean at the risk of missing a quiet but dangerous gap.
- Evidence citation depth — whether cells cite their source usages. Citations make the table auditable but heavier to maintain.
- Refresh trigger — whether the table is a one-off or re-cut when a sense moves. Living language argues for periodic recuts, matched to how fast the term is drifting.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is legibility under collision: a stakeholder who would never read a five-page memo will read a grid and instantly see that "we are using one word for four incompatible things," and the harm-flagged cells give a governance conversation a concrete target. It is the artifact that converts a fuzzy sense of drift into a defensible boundary.
Its failure mode is false precision through reification — the grid's tidy cells imply that senses are discrete and stable when living usage is fluid and overlapping, so a term captured mid-drift can be frozen into categories that erase the very continuity that matters.[n1] The classic misuse is treating a filled-in table as the definition of correct usage and disciplining people against it, which turns a diagnostic aid into a prescriptive cudgel and erases legitimate local senses.
