Evaluative checklist — instantiates Form-Content Congruence Design
Runs a form borrowed from another genre through a fixed list of fit questions to catch the assumptions it smuggled in from its home context.
A Genre/Form Fit Checklist is a fixed, reusable list of pass/fail questions applied to a form that was copied from somewhere else — a template, a genre, a house style, a document type lifted from another domain. Its defining move, true of it and false of the many-to-many matrix, is that it hunts one specific failure class: borrowed-template error. It does not map all content to all forms; it interrogates whether an imported genre's inherited conventions — its default ordering, its obligatory sections, its tone, its assumed reader — still fit the new content, or whether the genre is quietly importing purposes from the domain it came from. It is a filter, not a redesign.
Example¶
A city planning department has to present a contested rezoning to residents at a town hall. Under deadline, someone reaches for the artifact they have most templates for: the corporate pitch deck — a hook, a "vision" slide, big confident claims, a triumphant close, and few caveats. The Genre/Form Fit Checklist runs that borrowed deck against its fixed questions:
- Does the genre's default sequence match the content? The pitch order is hook → vision → ask; the content needs neutral trade-off disclosure. Fail — the form front-loads persuasion.
- Does the genre require sections the content should not have? The deck ends in a "call to action." Fail — it implies the decision is already made.
- Does the content demand sections the genre omits? Dissenting views, cost to residents, the appeal path. Fail — the persuasive genre has no slot for them.
The checklist names the smuggled assumption in one line: the pitch genre carries advocacy, but this content owes neutral deliberation. The deck is scrapped for a format with room for objections — before the town hall turns hostile rather than because it did.
How it works¶
- Name the genre's provenance and the purpose it served in its home domain.
- Reconstruct the genre's obligatory and forbidden slots and its default ordering — its formal hierarchy — as the thing under test.
- Score each against the new content's actual needs: required-but-missing, present-but-alien, ordering-inversion.
- Emit a list of smuggled assumptions to strip or replace — not a rebuilt artifact.
Tuning parameters¶
- Checklist provenance — a generic borrowed-template heuristic list versus a genre-specific one tuned to the template in hand.
- Strictness — advisory flags versus hard fails that block reuse of the template outright.
- Coverage — ordering only, or also tone, lexicon, assumed reader, and obligatory sections.
- Who runs it — an author self-check (fast, but the author may not see the genre they swim in) versus an independent reviewer.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is speed and specificity: it is cheap, it is repeatable, and it catches the single most common form-content error — "we used the template we happened to have." It shines exactly when a template crosses a domain boundary.
Its failure mode is known-error blindness: a checklist only catches the misfits already on it. A genuinely novel genre mismatch passes clean, and a passed checklist breeds false confidence — the form is adopted because the boxes were ticked, a surface imitation of fit rather than the real thing.[n1] The discipline that guards against this is to treat the checklist as a filter for known borrowed-template errors, not a proof of fit, and to escalate anything it cannot classify to a workshop or a reader walkthrough rather than passing it by default.
