Cognitive walkthrough — instantiates Form-Content Congruence Design
Steps a specific reader or user through the artifact to record what substance they actually infer and what action its form invites at each point.
A User or Reader Uptake Walkthrough is a structured pass through an artifact taken from the position of a specific real reader or user, recording at each step what substance they infer and what action the form leads them to take — then comparing that against the substance the makers intended. Its defining move, unique among the siblings, is that it measures uptake: the gap between the substance put in and the substance taken out. Every other mechanism reasons from the makers' own model of the artifact; this one is the only one whose evidence comes from an outside reading. It does not ask whether the form is well-designed. It asks what the form actually causes a real person to think and do.
Example¶
A county is redesigning its paper ballot. Rather than ask designers "is this clear?" — the makers already know who each arrow points to — the Uptake Walkthrough seats a small panel of first-time and elderly voters and steps each through a mock, low-stakes race. At every mark the facilitator probes two things: who did you just vote for, and how do you know? (inferred substance) and what will you do next? (invited action). The intended substance is fixed and explicit: one vote per office, this arrow selects this candidate.
Partway through, a pattern appears. In a two-column layout, the connecting lines lead several voters intending to choose the third-column candidate to punch the hole beside the second — the classic butterfly-ballot uptake failure. The form is valid, legible, and passes every internal review, yet uptake diverges from intent at a specific, locatable step. The walkthrough surfaces the misread the makers literally cannot see because they already know the answer.
How it works¶
- Recruit or simulate the actual audience segment — not proxies who happen to share the makers' background knowledge.
- Walk the artifact in its real order of use, pausing at each decision point rather than reading it whole.
- Probe two things at each step: the substance inferred ("what does this mean?") and the action invited ("what will you do?").
- Log every divergence from the intended substance as an uptake failure, tagged to the exact step and form feature that caused it.
Tuning parameters¶
- Walker authenticity — genuine target users versus convenient stand-ins; the closer to the real audience, the truer the reading, and the further from the makers' blind spots.
- Think-aloud depth — silent observation of choices versus continuous narration of reasoning.
- Sample breadth — one persona versus a spread; more personas catch segment-specific misreads a single walker hides.
- Task consequence — hypothetical versus a task with real stakes, which changes how carefully people read.
- Probe timing — per-step in the moment versus end-of-task recall, trading immediacy against flow.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it is the only source of external evidence in the whole pattern — what the form actually causes, not what the makers meant. It converts "we think it's clear" into an observed reading located at a specific step, which is precisely what a matrix or an audit, reasoning from the inside, cannot produce.
Its failure mode is the curse of knowledge: if the "user" is really a maker in disguise, the walkthrough certifies the makers' own reading and learns nothing; and a single idiosyncratic walker over-generalizes from an n of one.[n1] The discipline that guards against this is to insist that walkers not share the makers' privileged knowledge, to run several of them, and to treat every finding as located — this segment, this step — rather than as a universal verdict.
How it implements the components¶
uptake_probe— the per-step "what do you infer / what will you do" questioning is the probe; it is the mechanism's signature and no sibling else owns it.form_function_mapping— each probe tests whether a feature's form actually performs its intended function on a real reader, rather than in the makers' assumption.substantive_content_statement— the intended substance is the fixed yardstick against which observed uptake is scored.
It observes misreads but does not register them as hollow-compliance findings or gate release (distortion_register, substance_over_form_review_gate) — that recording-and-blocking is the Substance-over-Form Audit; nor does it run the collaborative revision cycle (revision_alignment_loop) that fixes them, the Structure-Substance Review Workshop's job.
