A Transferability Claim Check is a late-stage audit that holds the finished claims up against what the sampled cases can actually bear. Clause by clause, it trims any statement that reaches beyond the case logic, flags rival explanations the cases never adequately ruled out, and rewrites population-flavored generalizations into properly bounded transferability claims. Its defining property is that it runs no new sampling: it is a claims-side gate, not a selection move. It does not go find a better case — it decides what the cases already in hand entitle the write-up to say, and forces the confidence of the prose to match the evidence beneath it.

Example

A doctoral researcher is finishing a study of how refugee families rebuild social networks after resettlement. A draft conclusion reads cleanly: resettled families rebuild their networks primarily through faith institutions. The transferability claim check takes that sentence apart against the fourteen families actually studied. All fourteen were resettled in two mid-size cities that happened to have established co-ethnic congregations — so the claim, as written, silently generalizes from a narrow base.

The check does two things. First, it rewrites the claim as bounded: in resettlement settings with an established co-ethnic congregation, faith institutions were the primary vehicle for rebuilding networks — a statement the cases can support. Second, it surfaces a rival the study never separated: was it the congregation doing the work, or merely the pre-existing co-ethnic cluster that the congregation happened to concentrate? Because no sampled case pulled those apart, the check moves that rival from "silently assumed away" to an explicitly acknowledged limitation. The finding survives, but only at the scope the evidence earns.

How it works

  • Decompose the claim into clauses. Break each conclusion into the separate assertions it bundles.
  • Bind each clause to its cases. For every clause, name the specific cases that support it — and notice which rest on a narrow or homogeneous base.
  • Check the surviving rivals. For each claim, ask which competing explanation the sampled cases failed to rule out, and mark it as a limitation.
  • Rewrite to the earned scope. Convert population language into bounded transferability statements the case logic actually supports.

Tuning parameters

  • Bound strictness — how tightly claims are hedged to the studied conditions. Tighter bounds are safer but can hedge a finding into uselessness.
  • Rival-inclusion threshold — how plausible an unruled-out rival must be to earn a limitation line. A low threshold is honest but clutters; a high one risks burying a real alternative.
  • Kick-back option — whether an unresolved rival triggers a return to sampling (run a discriminating case) or is simply logged as a limitation. Kicking back strengthens the claim but reopens fieldwork.
  • Hedge budget — how much qualification the write-up can carry before readability suffers. Over-hedging protects the author but drains the finding of usable meaning.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it is the last guard against transferability overclaim: it aligns the write-up's confidence with its evidence, keeping the account's reach to what the cases support and leaving generalization, properly, as a judgment the reader makes with a bounded claim in hand.[1]

Its central failure mode is over-correction into mush — hedging every clause until the findings say nothing anyone can use. Its mirror-image misuse is cosmetic: trimming the wording of a claim while the underlying overreach survives, or dropping in a boilerplate "results may not generalize" line in place of actually testing each clause against its cases. The guarding discipline is to bind every claim to the specific cases that support it, one clause at a time, so that both mush and cosmetic bounding are exposed as failures to do the clause-by-clause work.

Transferability is finally the reader's judgment, not the author's: the check's job is to hand the reader an honest, bounded claim to reason from, not to declare where the findings will or won't hold.
