Layer Separation Reframing¶
Reframing — instantiates Locution-Illocution-Perlocution Decomposition
Reframes a disputed utterance from one fused verdict into separate questions — what the words said and what act they performed on a preserved record — so each layer can be judged on its own terms instead of collapsed into a single yes-or-no.
Most arguments about a message treat it as one indivisible object: "was that a real apology or not," "those are just words," "but it had that effect." Layer Separation Reframing is the move that refuses the single object. It takes one utterance and re-poses the dispute as distinct questions — what did the words literally say? and what act did saying them perform? — laid over a frozen record of who said it, to whom, through what channel, when. Its defining idea is that it is a framing intervention, not an analysis: it does not adjudicate any layer, decide whether the act was valid, or trace what followed. It only pulls the fused judgment apart into separable frames and holds them apart long enough that each can be examined. Everything downstream in the archetype depends on this separation already having happened.
Example¶
A co-parenting mediation stalls on one exchange. One parent insists "he never actually apologized"; the other snaps back "I literally said I was sorry — what more do you want." As a single question — was there an apology? — it is an unwinnable standoff, because each is answering a different layer without knowing it. Layer Separation Reframing freezes the utterance first: a text message reading "I'm sorry you feel that way about the pickup times," sent at 11pm after a missed handoff. Then it splits the question. At the said layer, the words are an expression of sympathy about the other's feelings — literally, "I'm sorry [that] you feel." At the act layer, that performs sympathy, not the taking-of-responsibility that an apology-as-act requires; nothing in it owns the missed handoff.
The reframe does not rule on whether trust was restored — that effect question is handed onward. What it produces is the thing the standoff lacked: two answerable questions in place of one unanswerable one. The mediator can now say, precisely, "the words were sympathetic, but as an act they performed no responsibility-taking — that's the gap you two are actually fighting about," and the conversation moves.
How it works¶
- Freeze the event. Preserve the exact wording plus speaker, audience, channel, timing, and setting, so the layers are separated against a fixed record rather than a paraphrase that has already fused them.
- Re-pose, don't answer. Replace the fused question ("was it X?") with the layered set (what did it say / what did it do / what did it cause), and refuse to let an answer to one layer settle another.
- Map each descriptive layer coarsely. Establish the said-layer (literal propositions) and the done-layer (the act performed) at the resolution needed to keep them distinct — deep taxonomy of either is a different mechanism's job.
- Hold the separation, then hand off. Keep the frames apart through the analysis and reconnect them only at final judgment.
The distinguishing discipline is that it is upstream and structural. It is what makes the difference between "the words / the act / the effect" available at all; it deliberately stops short of grading any of them.
Tuning parameters¶
- Separation depth — how many frames you split out (a bare said/done cut, or a finer set that pulls standing and effect into their own frames too). Finer separation catches disguised sub-acts but is heavier and slower for routine exchanges.
- Capture fidelity — how much surrounding context you freeze into the record. Rich capture supports later authority and effect analysis but costs collection effort; thin capture is fast but can lose the channel or timing a downstream layer needs.
- Reframe timing — whether you introduce the split early (before positions harden) or only once a dispute is already fused. Early is cheaper to land; late is more persuasive but fights entrenchment.
- Reconnection discipline — how strictly you keep the layers apart before recombining them for a verdict. Loose recombination slides back into the fused judgment you were trying to break; rigid separation risks never delivering one.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it dissolves the most common false-equivalence fights in this archetype — "those are just words" against "but it had that effect" — by showing they are answers to different questions, not rival answers to the same one. It is the front-end nearly every other mechanism here consumes.
It misleads in two ways. The archetype's named degenerate case is taxonomy performance: invoking the three-layer split as a way to stall — sounding rigorous while never delivering the verdict the situation needs. And over-separation that is never reconnected is its own failure: the layers are split for analysis but must be rejoined for judgment, or the reframe just multiplies a hard question into three hard questions and walks away. The discipline that keeps it honest is to treat separation as a means to a reconnected verdict, not a substitute for one — and to reserve fine-grained splitting for exchanges whose stakes justify it.[n1]
How it implements the components¶
Layer Separation Reframing realizes the archetype's descriptive, event-structuring components — the ones that turn one fused utterance into separable frames:
utterance_capture_record— freezes the words plus speaker, audience, channel, timing, and setting as the single substrate the separation is performed on.locutionary_content_map— separates and maps the said-layer: the literal propositions, references, and scope the words commit to.illocutionary_force_map— separates and maps the done-layer at the resolution needed to keep it distinct from the words: sympathy, not responsibility-taking; request, not order.
It does not trace what the utterance caused or compare intended against actual effect (perlocutionary_effect_trace, uptake_alignment_record — Effect-Chain Tracing), and it does not weigh standing or choose a remedy (authority_and_convention_context, layer_specific_repair_plan — Repair Target Selection). The deep single-layer analyzers — literal content parsing, force classification, context-condition testing — are same-named neighbor mechanisms that refine frames this reframing only establishes.

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Analysis, Modeling & Optimization
Rationale: Layer Separation Reframing operates as a computation, comparison, model, or analytic representation used to infer, estimate, or choose because it reframes a disputed utterance from one fused verdict into separate questions — what the words said and what act they performed on a preserved record — so each layer can be judged on its own terms instead of collapsed into a single yes-or-no
Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Layer Separation Reframing as 'Reframes a disputed utterance from one fused verdict into separate questions — what the words said and what act they performed on a preserved record — so each layer can be judged on its own terms instead of collapsed into a single yes-or-no', so its operative form is Analysis, Modeling & Optimization.
Nearest alternative: Communication, Facilitation & Learning — The mechanism analytically separates and remaps questions on a fixed record rather than facilitating a group reframing event.
Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; medium confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Linguistics & Semiotics
Origin pattern: Cross-disciplinary synthesis
Present-day reach: Multi-domain
Rationale: Rhetoric and law apply the reframing, but separating propositional content from the act performed by an utterance originates in speech-act theory and linguistic pragmatics.
Related originating lineages:
- Law & Governance — Legal interpretation supplied preserved-record review and separate adjudication of content and act.
- Rhetoric — Retained as a formative lineage identified independently as primary: Speech-act and argumentation traditions distinguished propositional content from the action performed by an utterance.
Review resolution: Rhetoric and law apply the reframing, but separating propositional content from the act performed by an utterance originates in speech-act theory and linguistic pragmatics. The source supports the selected provenance; the retained alternates record documented formative or independently established lineages, not downstream applicability alone. origin_mode=cross_disciplinary_synthesis because the mechanism joins contributions across those traditions. domain_reach=multi_domain records application breadth separately from origin.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Researched adjudication after independent review; medium confidence.

Notes¶
The reframe is only half a method. Separating the layers is what lets each be assessed fairly, but the archetype's invariant is that they must be reconnected for the final judgment — a message can be sympathetic in wording, empty as an act, and still have restored trust, and only the recombined picture is the verdict. Keeping the separation and the reconnection as distinct steps is what stops this mechanism from degrading into taxonomy for its own sake.
