Counter-Narrative Probe¶
Probing method — instantiates Alternative Hypothesis Generation
Builds the single strongest opposing account of the same facts — the version a sharp skeptic would defend — derives what it predicts we should see, and checks, so the leading story has to beat a real challenger instead of a strawman.
The Counter-Narrative Probe takes the leading explanation and deliberately constructs the single strongest opposing account of the same facts — not a grab-bag of alternatives but one coherent, maximally-credible rival story — then works out what that story predicts we should observe and checks whether we do. Its distinguishing move among its siblings is depth over breadth: where a generative prompt produces many quick alternatives and a differential holds a whole ranked set, this method invests in one rival built to be as persuasive as an honest skeptic could make it, and pressure-tests it. It is the steelman turned on your own conclusion — the leading claim only keeps its confidence if it survives a fair fight with its best opponent.
Example¶
An imagery analyst concludes that a newly walled compound with reinforced power and a steady flow of heavy trucks is a covert weapons facility. Rather than list ten possibilities, she builds the strongest civilian counter-narrative and commits to it fully: it is a commercial cold-storage and distribution depot — the wall is ordinary cargo security, the trucks are routine freight, the heavy power draw is refrigeration. Then she derives what that story predicts: commercial vehicle markings, daytime shift rhythms visible in the pattern of activity, refrigeration exhaust signatures, a public business registration. She checks each against the evidence. Some predictions hold, some don't — and the weapons hypothesis now has to win on the discriminating observations (say, restricted airspace and an absence of any commercial signage) rather than on the coherence of the original story. If the depot narrative had survived the probe intact, her confidence would have to fall, not hold.
How it works¶
- Fix the target — state the leading claim plainly.
- Steelman the opposite — construct the most credible single alternative as a complete causal story, built the way its most capable defender would build it, not as a knockover.
- Derive its predictions — ask what we would expect to observe if the counter-narrative were true, especially observations that differ from what the leading claim predicts.
- Probe — check those predictions against the evidence, and let the result move confidence: a counter-narrative that survives is a demand to downgrade, not a curiosity to note and dismiss.
The method's discipline is that the rival is genuinely dangerous, so refuting it is informative and its survival is a real warning.
Tuning parameters¶
- Steelman strength — how charitably the counter-narrative is built. A genuine steelman bites; a strawman built to lose wastes the whole exercise and manufactures false reassurance.
- Number of counter-narratives — one strongest rival versus two or three. Staying at one preserves depth; adding more drifts toward the differential's breadth.
- Prediction specificity — how concrete the "what we'd expect to see" list is. Specific, checkable predictions discriminate; vague ones can't be tested.
- Probe rigor — a thought-experiment walk-through versus actually going and collecting the discriminating observations.
- Confidence coupling — whether a surviving counter-narrative mandates a confidence downgrade or is merely recorded.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that a single strong opponent is often more decisive than a long list of weak ones: it embodies the falsificationist instinct to hunt for what the leading claim predicts should be absent, which is where beliefs actually break.[n1] It is most valuable when a conclusion feels compelling mainly because it hangs together well — coherence being exactly the signal this method distrusts.
Its failure mode is the strawman: build a flimsy counter-narrative, knock it down easily, and walk away more confident on no real evidence — the ritual of challenge without its substance. The mirror-image misuse is a counter-narrative so rhetorically slick that it persuades regardless of the facts, or a "devil's advocate" whose objection was scripted in advance to lose. The discipline that guards against both is the steelman rule — build the version a real, well-resourced skeptic would actually defend — and tying the verdict strictly to observed discriminators rather than to which story reads better.

It does not enumerate a broad rival *set (alternative_hypothesis_set) — that is Why Else Could This Be True? Prompt — nor bring in reference-class base rates (base_rate_or_reference_class_context), which is Base-Rate Alternative Prompt's job.*
