The Why Else Could This Be True? Prompt is the cheapest possible instantiation of the archetype: a scripted question, asked at the moment a favored explanation starts to feel obvious, that forces the reasoner to name other explanations consistent with the very same observation. Its distinguishing move among its siblings is that it does only generation — it opens the field for breadth and stops. It does not rank, filter, or test; it simply refuses to let the first coherent story stand uncontested by demanding two or three rival causal accounts of the same facts. It is the pure "consider the opposite" reflex, reduced to a sentence.

Example

A growth analyst at a subscription app sees weekly signups jump 40% the week a redesigned landing page shipped, and the story writes itself: the new page is converting better. Before that lands in the deck, she asks the prompt — why else could this be true? — and is required to produce three answers, not one. A tech newsletter mentioned the app that week (referral traffic, nothing to do with the page). A marketing campaign happened to launch the same Monday. An analytics change may be double-counting sessions. Each is a different causal pathway to the identical 40% number. The prompt hasn't decided anything — the redesign may well be the cause — but the flattering explanation now has to earn its place against a field instead of arriving pre-crowned.

How it works

The method is deliberately minimal:

  • Take the focal claim — the explanation currently in the lead, stated plainly.
  • Ask the forcing question and require a minimum count of alternatives (say, three), so the reasoner cannot discharge the exercise with a single token rival.
  • Voice each alternative as a distinct causal pathwayX → the same observation — rather than a vague "maybe something else," which keeps the alternatives real and comparable.
  • Stop before judging. Filtering, ranking, and testing are explicitly out of scope; the prompt's only job is to make the field exist.

Its power is that it is frictionless enough to run every time, and that the minimum-count rule breaks the anchor — one alternative is easy to wave away, three force genuine search.

Tuning parameters

  • Required count — how many alternatives are demanded. A higher count breaks anchoring harder but yields more implausible filler that later steps must clear.
  • Framing — neutral ("why else could this be true?") versus adversarial ("assume the leading story is wrong — what actually happened?"). The adversarial form digs deeper but can feel contrived.
  • Trigger point — asked on every claim versus only on surprising, consequential, or self-flattering ones.
  • Depth per alternative — a one-line label versus a sketched pathway; sketches are more useful downstream but slower to produce.

Its failure mode is false balance.
