Artifact — instantiates Narrative Construction Audit
Uses chronology to test whether the narrative confuses sequence with causality or hides temporal gaps, reversals, and delays.
The oldest trick a story plays is to put two events next to each other in time and let the reader supply the because. Timeline Review is the artifact that lays a story's events out on a strict calendar and uses the chronology itself as a test — checking whether the narrative's implied causes actually precede their effects, whether the period it selected is honestly bounded, and whether gaps, reversals, and delays have been quietly smoothed into a clean forward march. Its defining move is purely temporal: it does not draw causal arrows or judge whether one event caused another; it establishes when things happened with enough rigor that false sequencing has nowhere to hide. A story that claims a reform "led to" a recovery cannot survive a timeline showing the recovery began first — and finding that kind of order-violation is exactly what this artifact is for.
Example¶
A construction dispute turns on the general contractor's story: "the client's late design changes caused the six-month delay." Before it goes to the mediator, the client's project manager builds a Timeline Review. Every dated event goes on one axis: permit filings, the design-change requests, subcontractor mobilization, weather stoppages. The chronology immediately strains the story. The largest schedule slip is dated before the first design change — a temporal reversal the narrative had hidden by grouping events thematically rather than by date. It also exposes an omitted interval: a two-month gap where nothing happened on site, absent from the contractor's account, and a selected period that conveniently begins after the contractor's own permit delay.
The output is not a ruling on fault but a dated record showing the story's central "caused" claim runs backward in time and rests on a trimmed window. That reframes the mediation: the delay narrative cannot stand as told, and the omitted two-month gap becomes the thing both sides must now explain.
How it works¶
The distinguishing procedure is to reduce the story to dated events and then interrogate the order and spacing rather than the causes. Place every event on a strict chronology; where the story is vague about timing, mark the uncertainty rather than guessing. Then run three temporal tests: precedence — does each claimed cause actually predate its effect, or does the story rely on a reversal? Boundedness — is the selected period honestly chosen, or trimmed to start and end where the story is flattering? Continuity — are there gaps, delays, or reversals the smooth telling glosses over? The payload is any temporal violation: an effect that precedes its cause, a window drawn to exclude inconvenient events, or a silent interval. It stops there, deliberately — a timeline can prove a cause impossible (it came later) but never proves one true.
Tuning parameters¶
- Temporal resolution — the grain of the axis (years, days, minutes). Fine resolution catches near-simultaneous ordering that decides causation but demands precise dating; coarse resolution is quick but blurs the crucial sequence.
- Window discipline — how hard you challenge the story's chosen start and end. Aggressive re-bounding exposes cherry-picked periods but can import events of marginal relevance.
- Gap sensitivity — how small an unexplained interval gets flagged. High sensitivity surfaces hidden delays; too high and every ordinary pause looks suspicious.
- Uncertainty marking — whether undated events are placed by best guess or left explicitly floating. Floating them is honest; placing them is more legible but can fabricate an order.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is refuting causal claims that violate time — the cleanest disproof available, because an effect cannot precede its cause — and exposing the trimmed window and the buried gap that thematic retellings hide. It is the archetype's instrument wherever sequence itself is contested.
Its classic misuse is the inverse of its strength: reading correct chronological order as if it established causation, so "A came before B" slides into "A caused B" — the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy, now equipped with a tidy axis.[n1] A timeline can license a causal story or kill it, but it cannot confirm one. The discipline that keeps it honest is to treat the timeline as a filter — it removes impossible causal claims and flags suspicious windows — and to hand any surviving causal question to a mechanism built to weigh links, never to let precedence stand in for proof.
How it implements the components¶

It does not build the story's causal_sequence of typed, evidence-anchored links — that is Causal Sequence Map, the twin artifact whose logical arrows this review deliberately withholds in favor of pure chronology — nor cast the parties as focal_actor roles, which is Actor Role Map.
