Selection / Omission Matrix¶
Template — instantiates Narrative Construction Audit
Places included material and plausible excluded material side by side so narrative scope and distortion risk can be reviewed.
A story can be entirely true and still deeply misleading, and the gap between the two is made of what was left out. Selection / Omission Matrix is a template built around a single axis — in versus out — that places the material a story included beside the plausible material it excluded, so the shape of the exclusion becomes visible. Its defining move is deliberately narrow: it does not weigh causes, cast actors, or reach a verdict; it does one thing, which is to make omission inspectable by forcing the excluded column to be filled as diligently as the included one. The payload lives entirely in that right-hand column — the affected voice never quoted, the counterexample never mentioned, the inconvenient consequence dropped — and in the pattern the omissions form when you can finally see them all together.
Example¶
A conservation nonprofit drafts its annual impact story: "we protected 40,000 acres and reversed the decline of the marsh." Before it goes to donors, a program officer builds a Selection / Omission Matrix. The left column lists what the story included: acres protected, bird-count recovery, a signed easement. The right column is filled just as hard with plausible excluded material: three parcels where restoration failed, the ongoing legal dispute with an adjacent landowner, and — flagged as a marginalized voice — the tenant farmers displaced by one easement, who appear nowhere in the account.
The output is not a rewrite but a side-by-side that makes the story's scope legible: everything included is true, yet the excluded column shows the account is shaped to read as unbroken success. The pattern in the omissions — failures and displaced people, systematically absent — tells the officer the story is true-but-flattering. The report is revised to note the failed parcels and to acknowledge the tenant farmers, not because the wins were false but because the omissions changed what the wins meant.
How it works¶
The distinguishing procedure is paired columns and a symmetry rule. For the story under review, list included material on the left; then, with equal effort, populate the right column with material a reasonable version could have included but did not — counterexamples, affected parties, background conditions, inconvenient outcomes. The rule that gives the template its bite is that the excluded column must be worked as hard as the included one; an empty right column means the audit has not looked, not that nothing was left out. Reading the two columns together exposes whether the omissions are legitimate compression or a pattern that bends the story. Marginalized voices — parties present in the events but absent from the account — are marked as a distinct class of omission, because a missing person distorts differently than a missing fact.
Tuning parameters¶
- Omission-generation method — how excluded candidates are found (checklist of stakeholder types, a rival's perspective, the source archive). Systematic methods catch more; ad hoc listing is faster but misses whole categories.
- Materiality threshold — how much an omission must change interpretation to be logged. A low threshold catches subtle distortion but floods the column; a high one keeps only the load-bearing gaps.
- Voice-flagging rule — whether absent people are marked separately from absent facts. Separating them foregrounds silenced parties; merging them is simpler but buries the human omissions.
- Symmetry enforcement — how strictly the excluded column must match the included one in effort. Strict symmetry is the anti-cherry-picking guard; loose symmetry is quicker but lets the audit skew.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is catching the true-but-misleading account that every other check passes: a story whose every included fact is accurate but whose omissions quietly reshape its meaning. By demanding the excluded column, it turns the fallacy of suppressed evidence — arguing from only the facts that favor a conclusion — into something a reviewer can see and fill.[n1]
Its classic misuse is endless deconstruction: since every story omits something, an unbounded matrix can keep finding exclusions until no account can be told. The mitigation is the materiality threshold — an omission counts only if it changes interpretation, attribution, or action. The discipline that keeps it honest is to fill the excluded column before judging, and to distinguish legitimate compression from distortion rather than treating all omission as guilt.
How it implements the components¶
selected_event— the left column inventories exactly what the story chose to include, made explicit rather than assumed.omitted_event— the right column is the mechanism's whole point: plausible excluded material, worked as hard as the included column so omission becomes inspectable.marginalized_actor_or_voice— absent people are flagged as a distinct class of omission, foregrounding voices present in the events but missing from the account.
It does not synthesize the audit's facets into a themed, revised account with a narrative_theme, alternative_narrative, and final qualification_or_revision — that is Narrative Audit Table, the twin template; the difference is that this matrix isolates the single in-versus-out axis while the table reconciles all facets into a decision.

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Assessment, Review & Assurance
Rationale: Selection Omission Matrix operates by evaluates a story by symmetrically comparing included material with reasonable but omitted material. That concrete deployed or enacted form is Assessment, Review & Assurance under the frozen taxonomy.
Nearest alternative: Interface, Display & Cue — Although Interface, Display & Cue can support this mechanism, the frozen evidence makes its operative form the act that evaluates a story by symmetrically comparing included material with reasonable but omitted material; the alternative is therefore secondary rather than defining.
Review outcome: Adjudicated after independent review; high confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Literature & Literary Theory
Origin pattern: Cross-disciplinary synthesis
Present-day reach: Multi-domain
Rationale: Placing narrated and excluded material together reflects literary and narrative theory's analysis of selection, framing, silence, and the construction of a story world.
Related originating lineages:
- Communication & Media Studies — Media framing research examines how selection and omission shape public meaning.
- Computer Science & Software Engineering — Computer science and software-engineering practice supplies a parallel or contributing lineage for the mechanism's defining operation: places included material and plausible excluded material side by side so narrative scope and distortion risk can be reviewed.
- History & Historiography — Historiography treats archival and narrative omissions as sources of interpretive distortion.
- Library & Information Science — Collection appraisal and coverage analysis formalize what a corpus includes and leaves absent.
Review resolution: The blind reviewers agree that literature_literary_theory is the primary origin and differ only on reported ambiguity, alternate origin disagreement, origin mode disagreement. I preserve every independently explained alternate from both records rather than imposing a numeric cap. I retain cross_disciplinary_synthesis because the combined record shows material contributions from several lineages. The broader reach of multi_domain records portability separately from historical provenance, and encyclopedia_synthesis=true preserves the affirmative synthesis judgment where either reviewer identified one.
Attribution caveat: The mechanism synthesizes several critical traditions rather than reproducing a named method from one field.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Reconciled after independent review; medium confidence.
Notes¶
[n1] The fallacy of suppressed evidence (also "cherry-picking") — reaching a conclusion by citing only the facts that support it while omitting those that would weaken it. The matrix's insistence on filling the excluded column as hard as the included one is the standard corrective made into a template. ↩
