Boundary Question Ladder¶
Question protocol — instantiates Option-Space Reopening
A fixed, escalating sequence of questions that pushes outward on the edge of the option space, rung by rung, until the frame's true boundary and the options just past it come into view.
A Boundary Question Ladder reopens a narrowed choice by interrogating the boundary of the option space directly — the edge that decides what counts as "an option here" and what is dismissed as out of scope. Rather than toggling particular constraints or brainstorming candidates, it walks a reusable, escalating sequence of questions, each rung pushing a little further past the stated edge: what sits just outside this frame? who drew that line, and by what authority? what would have to be true for the excluded region to be included? whose interests does the current boundary serve? The ladder's distinguishing feature is that it treats the boundary itself as the object of inquiry and works a fixed general script — the same rungs apply to any frame — so it maps where the real edge lies and surfaces the options immediately beyond it, then folds them into an enlarged set.
Example¶
A research team frames a study design as run a randomized controlled trial, or fall back to an observational survey. A methods advisor walks them up a Boundary Question Ladder instead of picking. Rung one — what's just outside these two? A natural experiment exploiting an upcoming policy rollout. Rung two — who decided those were the only designs? The framing came from the lab's habit and its favored journals, not from the research question. Rung three — what would have to change to include the excluded designs? Access to an administrative dataset the team assumed was closed but had never actually requested. Rung four — what does the current boundary protect? A preference for methods the senior author is comfortable reviewing. Rung five — how far out can we push before options stop being credible? A stepped-wedge rollout and a regression-discontinuity design both sit inside the credible region; a purely anecdotal case study falls outside it. The ladder maps where the real methodological boundary lies and hands back an enlarged set — RCT, survey, natural experiment, stepped-wedge, regression-discontinuity — where the frame had shown two. It does not relax specific named constraints one by one or poll external stakeholders; it interrogates the edge of the space as a whole.
How it works¶
- Locate the current edge. State what the frame counts as in-scope and what it dismisses, so there is a boundary to push on.
- Climb the rungs in order. Ask the fixed sequence, each question reaching further out: just outside → who drew it → what would include the outside → whose interest it serves → how far can we credibly push. The ordering matters: early rungs make the boundary visible, later ones test how far it can legitimately move.
- Map, don't yet judge. Record where each rung places the real edge and which options appear just beyond it, without prematurely filtering — the ladder's job is to draw the boundary, not to adjudicate constraints.
- Fold in what's credible. Add the options that fall inside the pushed-out but still-credible boundary to the choice set, enlarging it for comparison.
Tuning parameters¶
- Rung count and reach — how many questions and how far the last rung pushes. A longer ladder maps a wider boundary but risks sailing into options no one will take seriously.
- Credibility cutoff — how far out you keep options before declaring them beyond the pale. A generous cutoff surfaces more; a strict one keeps the enlarged set actionable.
- Facilitation cadence — self-administered checklist versus facilitator-led round. A facilitator keeps a defensive team climbing past the uncomfortable middle rungs; a checklist is faster but easier to short-circuit.
- Boundary dimension — which edge you push (scope, authority, time horizon, acceptability). The same ladder aimed at different edges reopens different regions; running it more than once along different edges widens the catch.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is reusability and reach: because the rungs are a fixed general script rather than problem-specific analysis, the ladder can be applied to almost any narrowed frame with no setup, and its escalation reliably carries a team past the first, timid "what else?" into the region where genuinely different options live. It operationalizes boundary critique — the discipline of asking not only what is inside a frame but who set its limits and whom they serve — turning that stance into a concrete, repeatable questioning sequence.[n1]
Its failure mode is boundary drift into irrelevance: push the edge far enough and every frame yields "options" that are technically outside it but useless, and a ladder climbed without a credibility cutoff buries the real recovered options under fantasy ones. The classic misuse is treating each rung as rhetorical theater — asking "who drew this line?" to score a point rather than to actually relocate the boundary — so the map never changes. The guarding discipline is to keep every rung answerable and evidence-seeking, and to stop climbing once further rungs stop yielding options anyone would credibly choose.

This ladder fills the boundary-mapping and set-enlargement components — it draws where the real edge lies and grows the choice set, without testing individual constraints:
