The Source–Target Structure and Correspondence Matrix lays a metaphor's source and target side by side and aligns them one element at a time. Down the rows go the pieces a mapping might carry — objects, relations, processes, forces, roles, scales, constraints; across from each sits the target counterpart, a correspondence type (exact-within-scope, partial, contested, or absent), the target-domain evidence that grounds it, and a confidence tag. Its defining move is that it fixes one source and one target and maps their structure — prizing relations and higher-order processes over surface resemblance — without yet asking what the mapping implies and without shopping for a better source. It exists to turn a vivid impression ("a circuit is like plumbing") into an inspectable skeleton every later step can attach to.
Example¶
A physics teacher introduces electric circuits with the water-pipe analogy, and before using it in class she builds a matrix. Water pressure ↔ voltage: exact-within-scope, strong evidence, high confidence. Flow rate ↔ current: exact, high. A narrow pipe ↔ resistance: partial — one is geometry, the other a material property — medium confidence. A pump ↔ a battery: partial, because a pump adds energy continuously while a battery depletes. Then the revealing rows: water leaks and pools — no clean electrical counterpart, marked absent; water has mass and inertia — contested, no stable target correspondent.
The payoff is legibility. At a glance the grid shows that pressure/flow/resistance map cleanly — the part worth teaching — while "water leaks and pools" and "water has inertia" have no counterpart she can lean on. She has not yet judged whether "the battery depletes" is a dangerous inference students will over-read; she has only recorded that the correspondence is partial, leaving that verdict to a later step. The matrix is the map, not the ruling.
How it works¶
- Enumerate source structure, relations first. List the source's entities, but weight the analysis toward relations, processes, and forces — the load-bearing structure — rather than attributes like color or feel.
- Type each correspondence. For every source element, find the target counterpart and tag it exact-within-scope, partial, contested, or absent, from a small stable vocabulary.
- Attach evidence and confidence. Each row carries the target-domain fact that supports the correspondence and an honest confidence mark, kept separate from how natural the mapping feels in the source.
- Keep gaps first-class. Record "no counterpart" and "partial" rows as explicitly as clean matches, and leave the grid queryable so downstream mechanisms hang entailments, boundaries, and tests on specific rows.
Tuning parameters¶
- Granularity — term-level rows versus whole-system rows. Fine grain surfaces hidden gaps but bloats the grid; coarse grain stays legible but hides exceptions.
- Structural depth — whether to map attributes, single relations, or systems of relations. Deeper mapping is where a metaphor earns its keep, but it costs effort and can over-claim structure that is not there.
- Confidence resolution — one confidence per row, or separate marks for "the correspondence exists" and "it is strong." Splitting them keeps a plausible-but-weak row from looking solid.
- Absent-row prominence — whether "no counterpart" rows are recorded or quietly dropped. Recording them is exactly what makes later boundary work possible.
- Evidence bar — how much target evidence a row needs before it is promoted from partial to exact-within-scope.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it converts a vivid impression into an inspectable skeleton and forces the "no counterpart" rows into the open early, giving every later mechanism a specific row to attach to instead of a mood. Its failure mode is that a tidy grid lends false completeness — it can look authoritative while the one feature nobody listed is exactly the one a reader imports. It also drifts easily into surface-attribute matching (water is wet, electrons are…) instead of the relational matching where analogies actually hold; structure-mapping theory is explicit that it is systems of relations, not shared attributes, that make an analogy sound.[1] The classic misuse is treating a filled matrix as proof the metaphor is safe. The guarding discipline is to prize relations over attributes, keep partial and absent rows first-class, and hand the grid onward for grading rather than declaring victory.
How it implements the components¶
independent_source_and_target_domain_model— it builds and holds the source structure and the target structure as separate columns, so the source is never allowed to silently become the target's ontology.correspondence_projection_entailment_and_evidence_map— the aligned, typed, evidence-and-confidence-tagged rows are the correspondence map; the matrix supplies the correspondence half, leaving the inference it invites to be graded elsewhere.

The matrix is deliberately pre-inference: it records what corresponds, not whether the correspondence is safe to lean on. Keeping the two apart is what lets an author improve the map — add a missed row, downgrade a shaky one — without re-litigating every entailment, and it gives the audit a clean, row-addressable structure to grade rather than a paragraph of prose.
