Caricature Detection Review¶
Method — instantiates Epistemic Boundary Permeability Design
Checks whether the environment describes out-group or rival views in ways their informed holders would reject.
A closed environment rarely admits it ignores the other side — it insists it has already considered them. Caricature Detection Review tests that claim. It is a diagnostic method that takes the environment's existing depictions of rival or out-group views and holds each against a single standard: would an informed holder of that view accept the description as fair, or reject it as a distortion? Its defining move is applying a reciprocal, symmetric standard to what the group already says about its rivals, and scoring the distortion. It detects caricature and measures it; it does not itself write the corrected, strong-form version.
Example¶
A political advocacy nonprofit reviews its own campaign materials and internal talking points about the opposing coalition. A reviewer extracts every characterization of the other side and applies the reciprocal test to each: would a thoughtful, informed member of that coalition recognize this as their actual position, or reject it as a distortion?
Roughly a third fail — attributing motives no serious opponent claims, or presenting the weakest fringe version as if it were the mainstream. The reviewer classifies each distortion by type, computes a caricature rate, and tracks it release over release. The output is a measured signal that flags where the organization is arguing against a phantom. Where a fair version is actually needed, the finding is handed off to a steelman brief — this review does not write one.
How it works¶
- Extract the depictions. Pull every characterization of rival views the environment currently circulates.
- Apply the reciprocal standard. For each, ask whether an informed holder would accept it — the same fairness the group would demand for its own view.
- Classify distortion. Fair, or distorted by motive-attribution, fringe-substitution, or context-stripping.
- Score and trend. Compute a caricature rate and follow it over time.
Its distinguishing feature is that it evaluates existing material by a symmetric standard and yields a score. It produces neither a corrected brief nor a search for evidence the environment lacks.
Tuning parameters¶
- Who judges — an internal proxy for the out-group, or an actual out-group reviewer; the latter is far more valid and harder to arrange.
- Sampling of depictions — every characterization or a sample; broader is fairer but costlier.
- Distortion taxonomy — how finely distortion types are distinguished, which shapes what the metric can diagnose.
- Scoring scale — binary fair/distorted or graded severity.
- Review cadence — one-off audit or a standing release-over-release check.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it catches the specific self-sealing move by which a group feels it has "already considered" the other side — the caricature that lets a rival view be dismissed without being understood. Its natural benchmark is the ideological Turing test[1]: can you state the other side's view well enough that its holders cannot tell you are not one of them? A high caricature rate is a failure of exactly that test.
Its failure mode is that the judge's own bias contaminates the verdict — an in-group reviewer may rate a genuine distortion as "fair" because it matches what they already believe — and a low caricature score can breed complacency about deeper forms of exclusion the review never looks at. The classic misuse is running the review to certify "we're fair" when the real out-group would still object. The guarding discipline is to have actual informed holders adjudicate the reciprocal standard wherever possible, and to treat a clean score as a floor, not a clean bill of health.
How it implements the components¶
Caricature Detection Review fills the fairness-diagnostic side of the archetype:
reciprocal_standard_check— its core operation applies to depictions of rival views the same fairness standard the group would demand for its own, a symmetric test of representation.boundary_health_metric— the caricature rate is a tracked health measure; "reduced caricature" and "fair representation of rival views" are named boundary-health dimensions.
It flags distortion but does not build the fair alternative. Constructing the strongest evidence-bearing rendering of the rival view — strong_form_counterposition_record — is Steelman Counterposition Brief, its nearest twin: caricature detection measures the distortion, the steelman writes the corrected version.

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Assessment, Review & Assurance
Rationale: Checks whether the environment describes out-group or rival views in ways their informed holders would reject, making its operative form a bounded evaluation of existing evidence or work that produces a finding or disposition.
Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Caricature Detection Review as 'Checks whether the environment describes out-group or rival views in ways their informed holders would reject', so its operative form is Assessment, Review & Assurance.
Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; high confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Philosophy
Origin pattern: Single lineage
Present-day reach: Universal
Rationale: The principle of charity and argumentation ethics established faithful reconstruction of an opponent's actual position before criticism.
Related originating lineages:
- Rhetoric — Rhetorical and argumentation traditions developed practical tests for fair representation of an opponent before rebuttal.
Review resolution: Informal logic and argumentation theory are primary because the method diagnoses straw-man distortion by reconstructing and charitably testing an opponent's actual position. Rhetoric is a genuine adjacent lineage; political debate is an important application rather than an independent origin.
Review outcome: Researched adjudication after independent review; high confidence.
