It is easy to defeat a rival view once you have replaced it with its weakest version. Steelman Counterposition Brief forbids that shortcut. It is a written artifact that reconstructs a rival position in the strongest, most evidence-bearing form its own best proponents would endorse — assembled and recorded before any critique is allowed. Its defining move is that it builds and records the strong form of one view, sourced from that camp's own best work rather than from critics' paraphrases, so the environment is forced to engage the real opposing case instead of a convenient stand-in. It is a construction, not a diagnosis: it makes the fair version exist.
Example¶
A graduate economics seminar keeps dismissing a competing school of thought with a one-line strawman. The instructor assigns a steelman brief: two students must write the opposing school's best case exactly as its leading proponents would state it — drawing on that camp's own primary papers, citing its strongest empirical support, and presenting the mechanism at full strength — and circulate the brief before any rebuttal is permitted.
The result runs three pages and quotes the rival's best work directly rather than a textbook's dismissive summary. When critique finally begins, it has to aim at the real argument. Several students admit the strong version is markedly harder to wave away than the caricature they had been carrying, and the seminar's eventual disagreement is with a position its holders would actually recognize.
How it works¶
- Identify the rival view worth the effort. Not every opposing claim; the ones the environment is dismissing without engaging.
- Source it from the camp's own best proponents. Primary work and leading advocates, not critics' second-hand renderings.
- Reconstruct the strongest evidence-bearing version. The best argument and support a serious holder would offer.
- Record it, then gate critique. Circulate the brief as a standing document; only after it is on the table may rebuttal begin.
Its distinguishing feature is that it constructs and records the strong form of one view. It does not audit existing depictions for fairness, and it does not search for missing evidence across many hypotheses.
Tuning parameters¶
- Number of rival views — one deep brief or several; depth versus coverage.
- Depth and length — how thoroughly the case is built; longer is fairer but costlier and less read.
- Sourcing bar — primary proponents only, or secondary summaries admitted; the bar sets credibility.
- Proponent review — whether an actual holder of the view checks the brief before it circulates.
- Timing gate — how firmly critique is locked out until the strong form is on record.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it forces engagement with the real opposing case and inoculates a group against strawmanning its rivals — a written application of the principle of charity[n1], interpreting the other side in its most defensible form before judging it.
Its failure mode is the over-charitable steelman: a brief so generous it invents a position no real proponent actually holds, defeating a fantasy rather than the live view; or a steelman that becomes a rhetorical trophy — "look how fair we are" — with no genuine uptake. The classic misuse is steelmanning precisely in order to appear even-handed and then dismissing the view anyway, the fairness purely for show. The guarding discipline is to source strictly from real proponents (ideally have one review the brief) and to keep the reconstruction anchored to positions actually held, not idealized ones the rival camp would not claim.
