Viewpoint-Omission Audit¶
Governance and review — instantiates Perspective Depth Projection Design
Reviews what the chosen station, crop, and projection hide, shrink, or flatter — and requires alternate evidence wherever an omission carries real consequence.
Every viewpoint is a choice about what not to show. A camera set low and close makes a building loom; a crop that ends just before the service yard erases it; a bright, empty foreground makes a crowded plaza feel spacious. Viewpoint-Omission Audit is the governance step that treats those effects as accountable rather than incidental. It inventories what the selected station, field, crop, and focal hierarchy hide, minimize, or exaggerate, judges the consequence of each omission for the people it affects, and requires alternate evidence where an omission matters. Its defining commitment is rhetorical and ethical accountability of the viewpoint — not whether the geometry is internally correct, but whether the honest view is being told. Example¶
A developer submits a hero render of a proposed waterfront tower for public review: sun-drenched, seen from across the water at a flattering low angle, foreground clear, neighbors cropped away. The planning authority's omission audit interrogates exactly those choices. It inventories what the station and crop remove: the tower's winter shadow, which at that latitude falls across an existing playground; the service and loading zone, cropped just out of frame; the six-storey neighbor whose light the tower blocks, rotated out of view; and the pedestrian at street level, replaced by a distant water vantage no resident actually occupies. For each, the audit asks the consequence and the affected party — playground users, the overshadowed block, arriving pedestrians — and rules that three of these omissions are material to the decision. It requires the developer to add a winter-shadow study, a street-level eye-height view, and a section showing the neighbor's light loss. The glossy render may still appear, but it can no longer stand alone as the decision artifact; the audit has forced the hidden consequences back into the record.
How it works¶
- Inventory hidden and cropped content. List the entities, relations, and impacts the chosen station, field, crop, and focal hierarchy remove or de-emphasize.
- Assess consequence and affected parties. For each omission, judge who is affected and how much the decision depends on it — access, safety, shadow, crowding, power.
- Compare representative alternate stations. Test how the scene reads from other viewpoints and conditions a real user might occupy, not just the flattering one.
- Require evidence, revision, or disclosure. Add alternate views for material omissions, revise the framing, or record a justified, reviewed limitation.
Tuning parameters¶
- Consequence threshold — how material an omission must be to demand action. A low threshold surfaces everything but can bury reviewers; a high one moves fast but risks laundering real harm.
- Affected-party breadth — who counts as affected: immediate neighbors only, or access, safety, ecology, and less-powerful stakeholders too. Broader scope is fairer but slower and more contested.
- Alternate-station sample — how many and which other viewpoints are tested. A representative sample resists cherry-picking; a token one is theater.
- Disclosure depth — internal note, public comparison views, or full reconstruction metadata. Deeper disclosure builds trust but can interrupt the persuasive experience the render was made for.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
The audit's strength is that it holds a representation to account for its silences, not just its accuracy — the recognition, sharpened in critical cartography, that what a view omits is itself a rhetorical act with real effects.[n1] It is the mechanism that keeps a technically perfect image from becoming a dishonest decision artifact.
Its failure mode is token alternate views — appending a single unrepresentative "context" image to claim balance while the hero shot still carries the argument, so the audit becomes a rubber stamp. Its classic misuse is protecting the persuasive frame by setting the consequence threshold so high that real omissions never qualify. There is also a genuine tension: some spatial detail must stay hidden to protect privacy or safety, so more disclosure is not always better.
