Where a workshop builds a map and a matrix sorts claims, this protocol governs the exchange itself: it makes every contribution declare which question it is answering, and it stops the conversation the instant a reply is aimed at a different question than was asked. Its defining move is real-time detection. Example

A televised candidate debate uses a moderator running a cross-stasis protocol. The question on the floor is quality/justification: "Was last year's emergency curfew justified?" Candidate A begins listing crime statistics from the curfew period — an answer to a fact question (did crime fall?), not the justification question that was asked. Under the protocol, the moderator interrupts with a fixed move: "That answers whether crime fell. The question is whether the curfew was justified. Do you accept the statistic and argue it justified the measure, or dispute the measure regardless?" Candidate A is now forced either to stay in the quality column or to explicitly contest the question.

A minute later Candidate B counters by redefining "curfew" to mean "any evening restriction" so that a milder policy counts — a shift into the definition column mid-answer. The protocol flags it as an equivocation on the fly and holds the term fixed. Nothing is resolved about the curfew's merits, and it isn't the protocol's job to resolve it. What the protocol guarantees is that at no point does a fact-answer get to masquerade as a justification-answer, and that every slide between question types is named for the audience while it happens rather than discovered afterward.

How it works

  • Declare the question in play. Each exchange opens with an explicit statement of which question type is currently on the floor; contributions are expected to answer that question.
  • Interrupt on mismatch. The moment a reply targets a different question type, a fixed intervention move names the crossing and asks the speaker to either return to the question or openly contest it.
  • Hold terms fixed. Key terms are pinned; an attempt to shift a term's meaning mid-argument is flagged as equivocation and the original sense is restored before the exchange continues.
  • Work from the speakers' own words. The protocol quotes back the party's actual phrasing when naming a crossing, so the flag lands as a description of what was said, not an accusation of motive.

Tuning parameters

  • Interruption threshold — how large a crossing must be before the protocol halts the exchange. A low threshold catches every slide but makes conversation stop-start; a high one keeps flow but lets small equivocations accumulate.
  • Moderator authority — advisory nudge versus binding ruling on whether an answer was responsive. Binding authority enforces discipline but concentrates framing power in the chair.
  • Term-fixing strictness — how rigidly pinned terms are held. Strict pinning kills equivocation but can suppress a legitimate move to contest a definition, which itself is a valid stasis shift.
  • Turn structure — free exchange versus strict alternation with declared question types. More structure guarantees responsiveness but can feel stilted and slow.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is temporal: it is the only mechanism in the set that operates during the argument, so it prevents cross-question confusion from ever accumulating rather than diagnosing it after the fact. Over-applied, it also grinds genuine deliberation into procedural stop-start.
