Summary¶
Dispute-Question Alignment is the solution pattern for disputes that are stuck because the participants are not answering the same kind of question. The target prime, stasis, comes from rhetoric: before contesting substance, locate the point at issue. In practical terms, this means asking whether the disagreement is about fact, definition, quality or justification, policy/action, or jurisdiction/procedure.
The archetype does not decide the dispute by itself. It prepares the dispute for a valid next step. Once the controlling question is explicit, the parties can choose an evidence standard, burden, answer form, forum, owner, or handoff process that fits the actual question.

Structural problem¶
A dispute can look like a clash of answers while actually being a clash of questions. One person argues about what happened. Another argues about what the event should be called. Another argues about whether it was justified. Another argues about what should be done. Another argues about whether the present forum has the authority to decide. If these levels are blended, each contribution can be accurate and still fail to meet the other side's need.
This is why some arguments feel evasive even when participants are sincere. A factual answer does not settle a definitional challenge. A definition does not settle a value judgment. A remedy proposal does not settle jurisdiction. Dispute-Question Alignment makes those hidden mismatches visible.

Common mechanisms¶
A lightweight implementation can use a point-at-issue intake form. A richer implementation can use a stasis mapping workshop, a fact-definition-quality-policy matrix, a burden and standard alignment table, and a stasis review memo. Legal, governance, and platform settings may add jurisdictional routing checks. Formal systems can add a decidability probe when a process promises a terminating decision procedure.
The mechanism should match the stakes. A classroom discussion may need only a simple board with columns. A public governance decision may need a documented challenge path and appeal record.

Important parameters include the granularity of the claim set, the number of stasis categories, the strictness of evidence standards, the authority of the facilitator, the level of residual-disagreement preservation, and the cost of reopening a stasis label. High-stakes contexts should use stronger documentation, appeal, and inclusion safeguards. Low-stakes contexts can use faster conversational forms.
Invariants to preserve¶
The central invariant is that the question type remains explicit before an answer is treated as binding. Evidence must match the question. Definition, fact, value, policy, and jurisdiction questions must not be silently conflated. Authority boundaries must be visible where they affect legitimacy. Residual disagreement must be preserved when a question is bracketed, sequenced, or routed elsewhere.
Target outcomes¶
A successful use reduces circular argument, irrelevant evidence, hidden burden shifting, and category substitution. It helps people see when disagreement is factual, definitional, evaluative, remedial, or procedural. It also makes decision records more auditable because they state what question was answered and what questions remain open.
Tradeoffs¶
The main tradeoff is clarity versus over-simplification. A taxonomy makes disputes legible, but it can flatten hybrid or culturally specific questions. Another tradeoff is speed versus legitimacy: quick stasis labels accelerate action, but premature labels can exclude stakeholders. The archetype must also manage neutrality versus power, because the party that controls the question often controls what counts as relevant.
Failure modes¶
The most common failure is wrong-stasis lock-in: an authority labels the dispute as one kind of question too early. A second failure is category smuggling, where a party uses evidence for one stasis to win another. A third is procedural evasion, where jurisdictional objections are used to avoid legitimate merits questions. Other risks include false consensus, taxonomy overload, formalization traps, and lack of downstream handoff.
Neighbor distinctions¶
This archetype is close to framing, but it is not a generic frame shift. It is close to adjudication, but it happens before standards and forum can be applied cleanly. It is close to dialectical synthesis, but it asks whether the parties are opposing answers to the same question before synthesizing them. It is close to tiered escalation, but classification here concerns question type, not just issue severity or authority tier. It is close to progressive narrowing, but it narrows by kind of question rather than by option filters.
Examples¶
In a workplace conflict, the process separates what happened, whether it violated policy, whether circumstances justify an exception, and who may approve a remedy. In product design, it separates whether a complaint is a defect, an expected behavior, a usability problem, or a roadmap request. In public policy, it separates empirical claims about harm from definitional claims about category, normative claims about fairness, and policy claims about response.
Non-examples¶
This is not ordinary stasis as inactivity or equilibrium. It is not a full adjudication process after the issue and forum are already defined. It is not a generic discussion guide that asks for questions but does not distinguish question types. It is not a severity classifier for already defined support tickets.
