Rumor Dampening¶
Communication strategy — instantiates Resonance Detuning
Reshapes the timing, channel, and repetition of a correction so responding to a rumor stops re-exciting the very attention that spreads it.
Correcting a false claim can feed it. Every rebuttal repeats the rumor, restates it to new audiences, and signals that it is worth arguing about — so a loud, repeated, same-channel correction re-excites exactly the attention that spreads the falsehood, amplifying what it meant to quiet. Rumor Dampening manages the response so the correction does not become a fresh trigger: it chooses a less resonant channel, caps how often the claim is repeated, times the rebuttal to avoid re-peaking attention, and — crucially — watches whether attention is actually shrinking or rebounding. Its defining move is treating the correction as an input that can resonate, and shaping its channel, exposure, and repetition to break that fit, while monitoring the amplification it is trying to reduce. It is the one mechanism here whose subject is not the original trigger but the reply to it.
Example¶
A false claim spreads that a food company's popular sauce contains an unlisted allergen. The company's first instinct — a bold pinned post on its busiest social channel, "The rumor that our sauce contains X is FALSE," repeated daily — would be a mistake: it broadcasts the exact allergen-and-product pairing to millions who never heard it, and every repetition reinforces the association through sheer familiarity, since repeated statements feel truer[1] whether or not they are. Rumor Dampening reshapes the response. The correction is issued once, factually, on a durable owned channel (a dated FAQ page and a note to affected retailers and reporters) rather than shouted repeatedly into the feed where the rumor is hottest; the claim is not restated more than necessary; and the team tracks search volume and mention counts to see whether attention is decaying. If mentions keep climbing, they escalate; if they are already fading, they let the correction sit rather than re-igniting the topic. The falsehood is answered clearly, but the answer is engineered not to re-excite it.
How it works¶
- Judge whether to amplify at all. Weigh the reach of the rumor against the risk that responding introduces it to people who missed it — sometimes minimal, durable correction beats a loud campaign.
- Choose a less resonant channel. Place the correction where it reaches the people who need it (owned pages, direct notice to press and partners) rather than in the high-velocity feed where restating it re-ignites spread.
- Cap the repetition. State the correction clearly and few times; avoid the daily re-post that trades brief reassurance for entrenched familiarity.
- Watch the amplitude. Track mentions, searches, and sentiment to see whether attention is decaying or rebounding, and let that — not anxiety — decide whether to escalate or let it fade.
The distinctive property is that its object is the correction, and its governing question is empirical: is the intervention shrinking the harmful attention, or feeding it?
Tuning parameters¶
- Amplify vs. starve — how loudly to respond; louder reaches more of the misinformed but risks introducing the claim to the uninformed and entrenching it through repetition.
- Channel resonance — how hot the chosen channel is; a durable, low-velocity channel corrects without re-exciting, but may not reach everyone already exposed.
- Repetition cap — how many times the correction is restated; more repetition reassures short-term but builds the familiarity that makes a false claim feel true.
- Escalation trigger — what level of measured rebound flips the strategy from quiet correction to active campaign.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it prevents the self-defeating loop where fighting a rumor spreads it, and it grounds the choice in measured attention rather than the reflex to answer every falsehood loudly. Done well, a false claim is corrected for those who need it and starved of the repetition and reach it needs to grow.
Its failure mode is under-response: a genuinely dangerous or fast-spreading falsehood — a safety hazard, a defamation with legal stakes — sometimes must be met loudly and immediately, and a dampening posture can leave a vacuum that the rumor fills. The line between "don't feed it" and "negligently silent" is real and easy to misjudge. The classic misuse is invoking rumor-dampening logic to justify not correcting something the public genuinely needs corrected — using "responding would only amplify it" as cover for suppression or inaction. The guarding discipline is the amplification measurement itself: a dampening strategy is only legitimate while the monitoring shows attention actually decaying and the harm bounded — a rebound or a real-world hazard obligates a louder response.
